Chapter 8 - The Viper's Shadow

|
The news that Arabella Crawford was alive spread through New York’s underworld like a toxic rumor.
In the sprawling penthouse of Salvatore Moretti, panic had already set in.
Sofia Moretti, Salvatore’s twenty-eight-year-old daughter, stood on her balcony overlooking Central Park, clutching an encrypted phone.
She was dressed in a silk robe, her blonde hair perfectly styled, but her manicured fingernails were bitten to the quick.
“What do you mean Marco isn't answering his phone?” she hissed into the receiver.
“He was supposed to confirm Vincent was isolated at the docks twelve hours ago!”
“Marco’s car was found abandoned near the hospital,” a panicked voice answered from the other end.
“Two of his personal bodyguards were found dead in the basement garage with clean execution shots.”
“And the girl?” Sofia demanded, her knuckles whitening.
“The hospital reports that Arabella Crawford was discharged under private military escort.”
“She’s inside Vincent’s penthouse right now.”
Sofia threw the phone against the glass balcony door, shattering the screen into a thousand glittering pieces.
“Damn her!” she screamed, pacing the marble floor like a caged predator.
“She was supposed to be a nobody! Just an ordinary paper-pusher!”
Salvatore Moretti walked into the room, leaning heavily on his ivory cane, his face lined with age and calculated malice.
“Calm yourself, Sofia,” the old don said sternly.
“Youting like a spoiled child will not undo a failed strike.”
“Father, you don't understand!” Sofia turned on him, her eyes wild with fury.
“Vincent isn't just protecting her because she’s an employee.”
“He locked down an entire hospital floor for her!”
“He brought her into his personal residence!”
“For five years, I have tried to seduce that man, tried to secure our families’ merger through marriage, and he never even touched my hand!”
“And now he risks a five-way mafia war for an orphaned thirty-four-year-old secretary?”
Salvatore sat down in a leather armchair, tapping his cane against the floor.
“Vincent Cavallo is sentimental. That has always been his fatal flaw.”
“He thinks loyalty is a sacred vow.”
“We will use that sentimentality to crush him tomorrow night at the summit.”
Sofia’s eyes narrowed into slits.
“How?”
“The Commission will not allow him to break the arranged betrothal without just cause,” Salvatore explained calmly.
“The pact between our families was signed by his father twenty years ago.”
“If Vincent insults our family in front of the other bosses by choosing an outsider, the Commission will strip him of his shipping licenses.”
“And if he retaliates with violence, the entire Five Families will unite to destroy him.”
A cruel, poisonous smile crept across Sofia’s lips.
She smoothed down the front of her robe, resting a hand over her abdomen.
“Then I have an even better card to play, Father.”
Salvatore raised an eyebrow.
“What card?”
“I will announce that I am carrying Vincent’s child,” Sofia purred, her eyes gleaming with wicked triumph.
“Let the little secretary watch him try to deny an heir in front of the most powerful men in the country.”
“She will leave him in disgust, and Vincent will have no choice but to put a ring on my finger.”
Across town, inside the safety of Vincent’s bedroom, Arabella sat up against her pillows.
On the screen of her tablet, she was tracking a series of hidden bank accounts linked to Sofia Moretti’s foundation.
Arabella had not worked six years in the underworld without learning how money moved in the shadows.
She clicked a final confirmation link, and a medical record from a private clinic in Switzerland popped up on the monitor.
Arabella stared at the document, a cold, victorious smile touching her lips despite the pain in her side.

“You played the wrong game, Sofia,” Arabella whispered to the quiet room.
“And you picked the wrong secretary to threaten.”
