Chapter 7 - The Judas in the House

The silence that followed was heavier than the gunfire that had preceded it.
Outside the tall nursery windows, the autumn rain began to fall in sheets, drumming a steady, hollow rhythm against the glass. The scent of ozone, rain, and metallic blood filled the room.
Matteo did not move. He stood ten feet away from Daniel, his arms hanging loosely at his sides. The blood from his left shoulder was steadily dripping from his fingertips, landing with soft *pats* on the hardwood floor.
“Daniel,” Matteo said softly.
The older man did not lower the barrel of the tactical rifle. His gray eyes, usually so steady and fatherly, were filled with a profound, agonizing sorrow.
“Don't make a move, Matteo,” Daniel said, his voice trembling slightly. “Please. I watched you grow from a boy in short pants. I taught you how to shoot on the back lawn. I don't want to put a hole through you.”
Behind Matteo, Grace gasped, scrambling backward on the floor and pulling both Clara and Rosie behind her body. Clara looked past her father at Daniel, her eyes wide with total confusion.
“Uncle Daniel?” Clara’s small voice carried across the room. “Why are you pointing that at Daddy?”
Daniel flinched as if the child’s words had sliced him across the cheek. He swallowed hard, his knuckles white against the rifle’s polymer stock.
“Cover her ears, Grace,” Daniel choked out. “Cover them now.”
Matteo didn't look back. His eyes remained locked on the man who had served his family for thirty-four years. The man who had sat at his father’s bedside when the old Don passed. The man who had driven Elena to the hospital when she went into labor with Clara.
“How long, Daniel?” Matteo asked.
“Since before you were born,” Daniel whispered.
“You worked for Vance.”
“I worked for your father, Matteo!” Daniel’s voice cracked with sudden, explosive emotion. “Your father, Don Carmine Bellini! Do you think your father built this empire on raw muscle and bootlegging? Do you think the Commission let the Bellini family keep Westchester out of the goodness of their hearts?”
Daniel shook his head, a bitter tear cutting a track through the soot on his cheek.
“Thirty-five years ago, your father couldn't produce an heir,” Daniel revealed. “Your mother had five miscarriages. The family was on the verge of being swallowed whole by the Five Families in the city. Carmine went to Dr. Arthur Vance. Carmine paid the Montclair Institute fifty million dollars in cash to ensure that his bloodline survived.”
Matteo’s breath hitched in his throat.
“You?” Matteo whispered.
“No, Matteo,” Daniel said, his voice dropping to a devastating whisper. “*You.*”
The room seemed to spin on its axis.
Matteo felt the ground tilt beneath his boots. The world around him faded into a dull, roaring white noise.
“You were the prototype, Matteo,” Daniel said, tears now streaming freely down his face. “Subject One. You were the first child Arthur Vance ever successfully engineered for a syndicate client. Carmine’s DNA, spliced and refined to create the perfect successor. High physical tolerance, photographic memory, predatory instinct, zero hereditary weakness. You didn't become the most feared man in New York by accident, Matteo. You were manufactured to be a king.”
Matteo stared at Daniel, his mind reeling through three decades of memories—his father’s cold, demanding expectations; the endless medical checkups he was subjected to as a boy; the way he had survived illnesses that had killed other children in their neighborhood.
“And my father... he agreed to this?” Matteo breathed.
“Carmine signed a contract,” Daniel said. “The Montclair Institute provided the heir. In exchange, the Bellini family provided muscle, political protection, and offshore banking infrastructure for Vance’s research. For thirty years, I was Carmine’s liaison to the Institute. When Carmine died, he made me swear on his grave that I would protect you—and protect the agreement.”
“And Elena?” Matteo demanded, his voice hardening into diamond. “What did you do to Elena, Daniel?!”
“I tried to save her!” Daniel shouted, his composure shattering completely. “Elena figured it out! She found the old files in Carmine’s personal vault! She realized what you were, and she realized what they were planning to do to Clara! She tried to run, Matteo! She went to Zurich, she stole the second child, and she was going to expose the entire consortium to the Department of Justice!”
“So you cut her brakes,” Matteo snarled, taking half a step forward.
“No!” Daniel cried, tightening his grip on the rifle. “I swear on my mother’s soul, I didn't touch her car! That was Vance! Vance found out she had breached the Zurich vault! He sent a clean-up team to run her off Route 9 before she could reach the federal courthouse in White Plains! I didn't know until the police report crossed my desk!”
“Then why are you holding that rifle on me right now?” Matteo demanded.
“Because Vance has Clara and Rosie’s shutdown codes!” Daniel pleaded, his voice cracking with sheer desperation. “The synthetic cell lines have a built-in biological kill switch, Matteo! A genetic timer programmed into their bone marrow! If Vance doesn't inject them with the stabilizing enzyme every twelve months, their organs begin to fail by their eighth birthday! Clara turns eight in two weeks!”
Grace let out a piercing shriek from the floor behind him.
“He’s lying!” Grace screamed. “He’s lying to make you surrender!”
“Look at Clara’s fingernails!” Daniel yelled back. “Look at the beds of her fingernails, Matteo! Look at the blue tint!”
Matteo spun around.
Clara was clinging to Grace’s arm. Matteo grabbed his daughter’s small hand, turning her palm upward into the gray daylight filtering through the window.
Beneath the clear keratin of Clara’s fingernails, a faint, deep indigo discoloration was creeping up from the cuticle. It was the exact same color as the microscopic tattoo beneath her collarbone.
“She started showing symptoms three days ago,” Daniel said, his voice breaking into a dry sob. “That’s why Grace came here! Grace’s contact inside the Zurich facility told her the enzyme was only kept at the Montclair headquarters in Manhattan! Grace didn't come to you for safety, Matteo! She came because she knew you were the only man with the firepower to kick Vance’s door down before both of those little girls bleed out from the inside!”
Matteo looked from Clara’s hand down to Rosie’s tiny fingers.
On Rosie’s hands, the faint indigo shadow was just beginning to form at the base of her thumbs.

The genetic timer was ticking.
