Chapter 7 - The Blast

The veneer of high society dissolved in three seconds flat.

Billionaires and socialites shoved one another violently out of the way, stampeding toward the massive double doors of the front foyer. Glasses shattered on the floor, women kicked off high heels, and men abandoned their coats, clawing their way through the narrow exit into the howling blizzard outside.

"Matthias, what is happening?!" Eleanor screamed, clutching her emeralds, her face twisted in primal horror as the hissing grew louder. "Where is your father?!"

Matthias stood frozen in the center of the emptying room, his eyes darting frantically around the trembling walls.

"Fiona..." he stammered, his voice cracking like a terrified child’s. "Where is Fiona?"

"She’s in the basement with Arthur, Matthias!" I yelled over the deafening hiss of the escaping gas. "They're leaving through the underground tunnel to the carriage house! They left you here to die!"

The reality finally shattered his fragile ego. His knees visibly buckled.

Suddenly, every light in the mansion flickered violently and died.

The room plunged into pitch-black darkness, save for the pale, ghostly moonlight reflecting off the snow outside the high windows. Vance had cut the master breaker.

"The tree!" Matthias gasped in the dark. "The Christmas tree has a backup battery for the display lights!"

At the front of the ballroom, a small, mechanical click sounded inside the artificial base of the towering pine. A string of micro-LEDs flickered to life.

A tiny, blue electrical spark leaped from the base of the tree toward the brass floor grate.

"Down!" Vance’s voice roared from the shadows.

He appeared out of the darkness like a ghost, grabbing me by the waist and hurling his heavy body over mine, pinning me against the floor behind a massive, solid mahogany dining buffet.

Then, the world turned into fire and thunder.

The concussive wave ripped through the center of the ballroom.

The Austrian crystal chandelier above us exploded into tens of thousands of razor-sharp shards, raining down like a crystalline storm. The floorboards buckled and tore open, spewing a wall of orange flame into the ceiling. The roar was deafening, a physical fist that slammed into my chest, knocking the breath from my lungs.

For five seconds, there was only blinding light, heat, and the sound of tearing timber and shattering stone.

Then, the darkness returned, illuminated only by crackling pockets of fire licking up the silk drapes and the splintered remnants of the tree.

"Serena!" Vance’s voice sounded muffled, like he was shouting underwater. "Serena, can you hear me?!"

He rolled off me, his face blackened with soot, a deep gash bleeding along his hairline where a piece of crystal had grazed his skull.

I gasped for air, clutching my abdomen with both hands.

"The baby..." I wheezed, my voice trembling with terror. "I... I think I'm having contractions."

A sharp, crushing spasm seized my lower belly. It wasn't the rhythmic fluttering of kicks. It was the fierce, unforgiving vice-grip of early labor triggered by the concussive trauma of the blast.

"We have to get you out of here," Vance said, his voice urgent. He scooped his arms beneath my knees and back, lifting me off the debris-covered floor as if I weighed nothing.

"Matthias..." I gasped, looking back into the smoke-filled ballroom.

Ten feet away, Matthias was crawling through the rubble on his hands and knees. His tuxedo was shredded, his face streaked with soot and blood. He looked up, his eyes meeting mine through the swirling gray smoke.

"Serena..." he choked out, coughing violently, reaching a trembling hand toward me. "Help me... please..."

Beside him, the floor groaned.

The structural joists supporting the center of the ballroom had been completely incinerated. A massive crack opened in the parquet flooring, widening into a dark, yawning chasm that dropped straight into the inferno of the basement below.

Matthias looked down into the pit, the orange fire reflecting in his wide, terrified eyes.

"Marcus," I whispered, my voice shaking. "We have to go."

Vance didn't look at Matthias. He didn't hesitate. He carried me through the blown-out French doors of the dining room, stepping out into the freezing, merciful cold of the Connecticut snowstorm.

Behind us, a massive groan of collapsing iron and timber shook the earth.

The center of the Dre estate caved inward, sending a towering pillar of fire and sparks swirling up into the black winter sky.
