Chapter 8 - Blood and Loyalty

The orchestra swelled into a slow, sweeping waltz as Rafe led Tessa onto the center of the polished dance floor.
The surrounding crowd drew back to the perimeter, leaving a vast circle of shining parquet open just for them. For a moment, the entire underworld watched in breathless fascination: the giant mob boss who had never danced with a woman in his life, and the combat nurse who looked at him as if he were the only man in the room.
Rafe placed his right hand flat against the small of her back, careful not to press too hard against the open silk of her dress. His hand was immense, radiating a deep, comforting heat that seeped through the fabric and straight into her spine. Tessa rested her left hand lightly on his uninjured shoulder, feeling the thick, unyielding muscle beneath his tuxedo jacket, and placed her right hand in his massive palm.
They began to move.
To Tessa’s surprise, Rafe was remarkably graceful. His steps were measured, smooth, and deliberate. Because of his height, he had to look down at her, but there was an effortless rhythm to his movement, as if his immense strength allowed him to glide through the space without disturbing the air.
"You're full of surprises, Calder," she murmured, looking up into his face. "Where did a street fighter learn to waltz?"
"My mother," Rafe said, his voice quiet, almost melancholy. "Before my father turned the family into a syndicate, she insisted that a Calder must know how to move in high society. She said a man who only knows how to break things is half a man."
"She was a smart woman."
"She died when I was fourteen," he said, turning her gently through a sweeping arc. "After that, there was no more dancing. Only territory. Debts. Blood."
Tessa looked at the faint white scar running along the ridge of his jaw, down toward his collarbone. "Is that all your life is, Rafe? Territory and blood?"
Rafe slowed their turn, his dark eyes searching hers with an intensity that made her breath catch.
"It was," he admitted, his fingers tightening slightly around hers. "Until three nights ago. Until a woman with a trauma bag shoved her hand against my chest and told me to sit down."
Tessa’s heart skipped a beat, a fluttering sensation rising in her throat that had nothing to do with danger and everything to do with the look in his eyes.
"Rafe..."
"They call me a monster, Tessa," he whispered, his voice thick with an emotion he had kept locked behind steel walls for twenty years. "They look at my body, my scars, the things I’ve had to do to keep June alive, and they turn away in disgust. But you... you touched my wounds. You stayed in the fire. You didn't flinch."
"I told you," she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "I know what a real monster looks like. And it’s not you."
Rafe’s breath hitched. For a moment, the grand ballroom, the glittering chandeliers, and the hundreds of staring eyes faded into nothingness. There was only the heat of his hand on her back, the steady rhythm of their feet against the floor, and the unspoken, terrifying pull between two souls forged in different fires, realizing they fit together with absolute, lethal perfection.
Before she could speak again, the earpiece hidden beneath Rafe’s collar crackled.
A voice cut through the static—hurried, terrified. *“Boss. It’s Malcolm from the perimeter. Moretti’s car just left the gala, but he didn't head north toward his estate. A convoy of five black vans just breached the south checkpoint near St. Jude’s.”*
Rafe’s steps froze. His body turned instantly to ice.
"Say that again, Malcolm," Rafe commanded into his lapel mic, his voice dropping into a register of pure, frigid menace.
*“They’re at the hospital, boss. They’re targeting the trauma wing where Tessa worked. They think she's still on staff. They’re going to burn the facility to draw you out.”*
Tessa heard every word. Her blood ran cold.
"My friends," she gasped, her fingernails digging into Rafe’s shoulder. "Sarah and Marcus... they're on the night shift in the trauma bay right now! The patients—"
"Moretti knows he lost the room," Rafe said, his jaw tightening into iron. "He knows the other families will back me after tonight. He’s burning everything down out of spite."
Tessa didn't wait. She gathered the skirts of her emerald gown in one hand, broke from his grip, and began sprinting toward the exit. "I’m going."
"Tessa, wait!" Rafe caught her by the wrist near the top of the stairs, pulling her back against his chest. "You cannot go in there alone. It’s an ambush."
"Those are my people, Calder!" she shouted, tears of pure fury burning behind her eyes. "They don't have bodyguards! They don't have bulletproof glass! If Moretti hurts them because of me—"
"They won't," Rafe promised, his dark eyes blazing with an unholy, terrifying fire. He reached inside his jacket, pulled out his primary phone, and hit a single speed-dial button.

"Every unit," Rafe commanded into the phone, his voice carrying the finality of an executioner. "Code Black. Lock down the four blocks surrounding St. Jude’s. No one leaves. No one surrenders. We are going to war."
