Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Wanted Everything Claire Had|

Natalie Pierce had spent six years building Adrian Cole's corporate empire beside him.
She had negotiated contracts.
Managed crises.
Traveled across continents.
Stayed in offices until midnight.
And watched Claire Whitmore receive the ring.
The house.
The proposal.
The promises.
Natalie told herself she didn't care.
That Claire was sentimental and unsophisticated.
That Adrian would eventually realize he needed a woman who understood ambition.
Someone like Natalie.
But Adrian never looked at her the way he once looked at Claire.
Not even during their longest nights in Zurich.
He trusted Natalie professionally.
Relied on her.
Praised her intelligence.
But whenever Claire called, something changed in his face.
Even when he sounded annoyed.
Even when he postponed plans.
There was always a tenderness Natalie couldn't create.
So she began convincing herself that Claire was the obstacle.
And eventually, she started looking for ways to remove her.
Now Natalie sat across from two attorneys in a private conference room.
The forensic investigators had uncovered irregular access to the foundation system.
Several transactions had been initiated using credentials associated with her department.
Her attorney warned her not to answer questions without reviewing the evidence.
Natalie nodded.
But inside, panic was spreading.
The Zurich agreement was collapsing.
Adrian had suspended her system access.
And Claire's lawyers were asking questions.
The worst part wasn't losing the acquisition.
It was losing Adrian.
Across the city, Claire sat beside Rachel reviewing the recording again.
"Do we know who the man is?" Claire asked.
Rachel nodded.
"Martin Keller. An investment consultant based in Switzerland."
"And his connection to Natalie?"
"Former business associates."
Claire stared at the screen.
"What were they trying to do?"
Rebecca Lawson leaned forward.
"Possibly divert funds and conceal the losses through the foundation. But we still need to verify the transactions and identify everyone involved."
Claire nodded.
She was beginning to understand something terrifying.
Adrian's neglect had made her vulnerable.
But Natalie had exploited that neglect for her own purposes.
For four years, Claire had blamed herself whenever Adrian chose work.
Maybe she wasn't supportive enough.
Maybe she demanded too much.
Maybe successful men simply needed more patience.
Now she saw how dangerous that thinking had become.
She had stopped questioning things.
Stopped reading documents carefully.
Stopped asking where Adrian really was.
Because every question ended with him accusing her of being unreasonable.
She looked at Rachel.
"I should have noticed."
Rachel shook her head.
"You should have been able to trust people without having that trust exploited."
Claire swallowed.
"But I need to take responsibility for what I signed."
"Yes. And that's exactly what you're doing now."
Claire nodded.
For the first time, she felt something stronger than heartbreak.
Determination.
She wasn't going to let her past define her future.
That evening, Adrian requested a meeting through Rachel.
Claire agreed.
One hour.
At Rachel's office.
With her friend nearby.
Adrian arrived wearing a dark suit, but he looked nothing like the confident businessman who'd dismissed their wedding five days earlier.
His face was pale.
His eyes were tired.
And when he saw Claire, he stopped.
"Hi."
She nodded.
"Hello."
He sat across from her.
For several seconds, neither spoke.
Then Adrian said:
"I know about the recording."
Claire folded her hands.
"Okay."
"My lawyers are cooperating with the investigation."
"Good."
He looked down.
"Claire, I never knowingly authorized those transfers."
She studied him.
"I hope that's true."
His face tightened.
"I understand why you don't trust me."
She looked away.
He continued.
"I made it easy for someone to use our relationship against you."
Claire felt tears sting her eyes.
"Yes."
"I gave you documents without explaining them."
"Yes."
"I treated questions like interruptions."
"Yes."
His voice broke.
"And I made you believe your needs were a problem."
Claire looked at him.
For years, she'd wanted him to say those things.
Now he finally was.
And she wasn't sure what to do with them.
Adrian swallowed.
"I was selfish."
She nodded.
He looked at her.
"I thought building a successful company meant I was building a future for us."
Claire's expression softened slightly.
"But you forgot to live in that future with me."
He closed his eyes.
"Yes."
Silence.
Then he reached into his coat and removed a small velvet box.
Claire's stomach tightened.
"Adrian."
He placed it on the table.
Her engagement ring.
She stared.
He didn't open the box.
"I brought it because I wanted to return it properly if that's what you want."
Claire looked up.
He continued.
"I'm not asking you to marry me."
Her heart gave a painful twist.
"I'm not asking you to come home."
His eyes filled.
"I'm asking whether there's anything I can do to repair the harm I've caused."
Claire sat silently.
Then she whispered:
"Start by telling the truth even when it costs you something."
Adrian nodded.
"I will."
She looked at the box.
Then pushed it gently toward him.
"Keep it for now."
His face crumpled.
"Claire..."
"I'm not ready to decide what that ring means anymore."
He nodded.
"Okay."
She stood.
The meeting was over.
Adrian rose too.
He didn't reach for her.
Didn't try to kiss her.
Didn't ask her to reconsider.
He simply said:
"I hope one day you can forgive me."
Claire looked at him.
"I hope one day I can stop hurting."
Then she walked out.
Adrian remained alone in the conference room.
Minutes later, Daniel called.
"Adrian, we have a problem."
He closed his eyes.
"What now?"
"The investigators found another signature on the foundation transfers."
Adrian frowned.
"Whose?"
Daniel hesitated.
"Your father's."
Adrian went completely still.
His father.
Richard Cole.
The man who'd supposedly retired from the company three years earlier.
The man who'd always told Adrian that emotions made businessmen weak.
Adrian stared at the wall.

Then Daniel continued:
"And there's evidence he was coordinating with Natalie before the Zurich acquisition was announced."
