Chapter 8 - The Price of the Crown

Julian Vane fell in absolute silence, swallowed by the darkness and the rain.

Evelyn did not watch him fall. She stepped back from the railing, her hands falling to her sides, her chest rising and falling in deep, measured breaths.

The wind caught her dark hair, whipping it across her face. For a long moment, she stood alone on the wet concrete of the helipad, looking like a statue carved from obsidian and marble.

Matteo walked toward her slowly, his boots crunching against the wet gravel border. The rain soaked through his shirt, diluting the crimson stain spreading across his shoulder, but he barely felt the cold.

"It's over," he said.

Evelyn turned to look at him. In the dim amber glow of the helipad lights, she looked smaller somehow, stripped of her corporate disguise, yet undeniably sovereign.

"It is never over, Matteo," she said quietly. "A vacuum does not remain empty for long. When the sun rises, the five families will realize that the House of Vane did not die tonight. They will realize that I am here."

"Let them," Matteo said, his voice hard as iron. He reached out with his uninjured hand, his fingers gently catching her wrist.

Her skin was freezing from the rain, but beneath it, her pulse beat with ferocious, unbreakable vitality.

Evelyn looked down at his hand on her wrist. A faint, ghost of an expression crossed her face—something ancient and vulnerable that she quickly masked behind her disciplined veneer.

"You're bleeding, Mr. Duca," she said, her voice slipping for a fleeting second back into the formal cadence of the forty-fourth floor.

"And you're soaked, Miss Hart," he countered, refusing to let go. "Who's going to reschedule my eleven o'clock meeting with the port authority?"

A tiny, exhausted laugh escaped her lips—the first real, human sound he had ever heard from her. She looked up at him through wet eyelashes, the amber in her eyes softening into something rich and profound.

"The port authority is currently under federal investigation thanks to the file I redirected," she said softly. "Your calendar is clear for the rest of the week."

"Good," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a low, intimate rasp that cut through the dying storm. "Because you and I have a great deal to discuss."

They stood there on the roof of the world, surrounded by the wreckage of an empire and the birth of another, the space between them charged with an intensity that had nothing to do with contracts, syndicates, or bloodlines.

For fourteen months, they had danced around one another in the sterile light of an executive suite—he commanding an empire, she quietly keeping it from crumbling. Now, the masks were gone. There were no secrets left between them, only the raw, dangerous truth of who they were.

"The families will demand a summit," Evelyn said, not pulling away from his touch. "Moretti will want to swear fealty. Brand's territory will have to be partitioned. The Chicago factions will try to test our borders."

*Our borders.*

The word hung in the cold air between them like an unspoken vow.

"Let them come," Matteo said, his eyes burning into hers. "We built this tower to be an impenetrable fortress. We'll build the new Compact the same way."

Before she could reply, the heavy mechanical grind of helicopter blades began to thump through the low cloud cover.
