Chapter 5 - The Man Who Threatened Her

|

Gabriel waited until Lana had eaten a full breakfast before he asked her to tell him about Leo again.

She sat up in bed with toast crumbs on the blanket and color in her cheeks for the first time.

Dr. Ruiz had approved solid food and had warned Gabriel that stress remained dangerous for mother and baby.

He recorded nothing and took no notes because he wanted her to know this was not an interrogation.

Lana described the Thursday night two weeks earlier when Leo had knocked on her apartment door at nine.

She had opened it on the chain because she recognized his voice from four years of boardroom meetings.

Leo had smiled through the gap and said he brought a file Gabriel needed signed before morning.

The moment she released the chain he had stepped inside with the confidence of a man who owned hallways.

He had not brought any file and she had understood her mistake while he looked around her half packed rooms.

Boxes had stood against the wall because she was already secretly preparing to leave the city forever.

Leo had opened one box with the toe of his polished shoe and seen baby clothes folded inside tissue.

Lana had bought the clothes impulsively from a street market and hidden them like evidence of a crime.

Leo had picked up a tiny yellow sweater and his smile had changed into something colder and knowing.

He had asked if Gabriel knew he was about to become a father in that pleasant boardroom voice of his.

She had denied everything while Leo held the sweater between two fingers like a winning playing card.

He had told her men in their business solved embarrassments before those embarrassments learned to walk and talk.

He had mentioned a judge and a family name and a quiet clinic where problems disappeared without paperwork questions.

Lana had backed toward her kitchen and Leo had followed only two steps before stopping to enjoy her fear.

He had said Gabriel would thank him later for protecting the Costa reputation from a secretary's ambition.

He had suggested she was trying to trap a rich man and that no jury of his peers would believe otherwise.

Those words had struck the exact fear Gabriel himself had planted in August with liability and distraction.

Leo had left after warning her that disappearing quietly was the kindest option still available to her.

He had paused at the door and told her accidents on staircases ended many sad stories in their city.

She had locked three locks after him and slid down the door and cried until her throat ached.

The next morning she had accelerated every plan and called Priya during lunch from a borrowed phone.

Priya had found the document woman within two days through a cousin who asked no questions for cash.

Lana had withdrawn money in small amounts from three branches so no single teller would remember her face.

She had practiced signing Lana Miller until the new name stopped feeling like a lie on paper.

Gabriel listened to all of it without interruption while his hands rested flat and still on his knees.

When she finished he asked if Leo had touched her and she shook her head quickly to calm him.

She said the threat had been enough because she knew what Leo did for the family outside boardrooms.

Gabriel told her Leo handled port contracts and negotiations and had never been ordered to harm any woman.

She asked quietly whether Gabriel truly knew everything his captains did in his name after dark each night.

That question landed because it was fair and because honest men must answer fair questions without flinching.

He said he would know Leo's actions by nightfall even if he had to dismantle the port division himself.

Thomas entered then with a folder and Gabriel rose to meet him by the door away from her bed.

Thomas reported that Leo had visited the pier office twice since the collapse and removed a storage drive.

He reported that Leo had also asked hospital reception which room Lana occupied before being turned away.

Gabriel felt the winter river of rage rise again and forced it into useful and disciplined channels.

He ordered Thomas to place two trusted men outside Lana's door with orders to admit no one unapproved.

He ordered a full audit of Leo's contracts for three years with accountants from outside the family firms.

He ordered Leo brought to the warehouse office at six that evening without being told the reason why.

Thomas nodded and left and Gabriel returned to the bedside to find Lana watching him with wary eyes.

She said this was exactly the world she did not want her child learning to breathe inside someday.

He told her it was also the world where he could find a missing drive and a liar before dinner.

She asked what would happen to Leo at six and Gabriel considered lying to protect her peace of mind.

He chose honesty instead and said Leo would be questioned and then handed to lawyers or police as facts required.

She searched his face and seemed surprised that police were an option he would name before violence.

He admitted his father would have chosen violence first and questions later if questions were asked at all.

He said he was trying to build something his child would not have to hide from in twenty years.

The word child settled between them gently this time instead of striking like a diagnosis in a hallway.

Lana rested her hand over her stomach and Gabriel noticed she did it whenever she felt safest.

A nurse brought ultrasound images Dr. Ruiz had ordered that morning for reassurance after the collapse.

The grainy printout showed a small curved shape that looked impossibly real and impossibly fragile at once.

Gabriel held the image with both hands as if paper could break from a careless grip in his fingers.

Lana watched him study their child and something in her guarded expression softened despite her intentions.

She told him the baby was due in late May and that Dr. Ruiz expected a healthy pregnancy with rest.

He asked if she had chosen any names and she admitted she whispered one name when she was alone.

She would not tell him the name yet and he accepted the boundary without pressing her for more.

At five that evening Thomas returned and whispered that Leo had arrived at the warehouse with two bodyguards.

Gabriel stood and straightened his cuffs with the calm that had emptied boardrooms for a decade of deals.

Lana caught his sleeve and asked him to come back to the hospital when the questioning was finished.

May you like

It was the first time she had asked him to return to any place for her own sake.

He promised he would come back and she released his sleeve slowly and let him walk toward Leo Marconi.
