Chapter 14 - The Last Night of the Romano Empire|

The police located Ethan less than two hours later.

He was being held in an abandoned office building near the river.

A coordinated operation brought him out safely.

When Detective Brooks called to confirm he was alive, Hannah collapsed into tears.

I watched from the hallway.

Part of me wanted to hug her.

Another part wanted to walk away forever.

Betrayal was complicated.

Especially when it came from someone who had once been family.

Massimo found me standing beside a window overlooking the city.

"He's safe," he said.

I nodded.

"I heard."

He stood beside me.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then I asked the question that had been haunting me.

"What happens to Hannah?"

"That's for the courts to decide."

I swallowed.

"She helped them hurt me."

"Yes."

"But she also saved evidence."

"Yes."

I looked at him.

"How do you live with people being both good and terrible?"

Massimo considered the question.

"By remembering that one good decision doesn't erase a bad one."

I nodded slowly.

"And one bad decision doesn't mean someone can never change."

He looked at me.

"No."

We stood together in silence.

Then Detective Brooks arrived.

"We found something."

She held a folder.

"Your father's trust documents."

My heart began pounding.

"Where?"

"Under the raised flowerbed at Miller Blooms."

I closed my eyes.

Dad.

Of course.

The place he'd loved most.

The place he'd built with his hands.

The place I'd spent two years fighting to save.

Brooks opened the folder.

"Thomas Miller was named successor trustee of a property trust established by Antonio Romano."

Massimo's grandfather.

I looked at Massimo.

He seemed stunned.

Brooks continued.

"The trust controls several commercial properties, including warehouses, apartment buildings, and development parcels."

"How much are they worth?" I whispered.

She hesitated.

"Potentially tens of millions."

I nearly laughed.

It was too absurd.

I'd spent months worrying about a twelve-hundred-dollar repair bill.

Meanwhile, my name was attached to property worth more money than I could imagine.

"Does that mean I'm rich?"

Brooks shook her head.

"Not necessarily."

I frowned.

"Then what does it mean?"

"You're a fiduciary."

She explained that I controlled decisions about the properties under the trust's terms.

I didn't personally own the assets.

I couldn't simply sell them and take the money.

But I could prevent unauthorized transfers.

And that was exactly what Carlo wanted to change.

Massimo studied the documents.

"Vittorio couldn't transfer the properties without Sophie's approval."

Brooks nodded.

"Correct."

"And the fake engagement scandal was designed to pressure her into signing."

"That's our working theory."

I looked down at the paperwork.

My father's signature appeared on the final page.

Beneath it was a handwritten note.

Protect the families who live and work on this land.

Tears filled my eyes.

Dad hadn't been hiding a fortune.

He'd been protecting something he believed mattered.

People.

Homes.

Jobs.

A future.

I looked at Massimo.

"We have to stop Carlo."

"We will."

Brooks closed the folder.

"We have enough evidence to seek warrants, but Carlo has disappeared."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Where would he go?"

Massimo stared at the city.

"Somewhere he believes he still has leverage."

Then his phone rang.

An unknown number.

He answered.

"Romano."

Carlo Vitali laughed.

"Congratulations on finding the documents."

Massimo's expression hardened.

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere familiar."

I stepped closer.

Carlo continued.

"Tell Sophie I admire her father."

My blood ran cold.

"He was clever."

Massimo glanced at me.

"But not clever enough."

I grabbed the phone.

"Carlo!"

He chuckled.

"Miss Miller."

"Leave my family alone."

"Your family?"

He laughed.

"Your family has been interfering with my business for twenty years."

"Then your business must be rotten."

Massimo looked at me with something resembling pride.

Carlo's voice sharpened.

"You have one final opportunity."

"To do what?"

"Sign the transfer documents."

"No."

"Think carefully."

"I have."

Silence.

Then Carlo said softly, "Look outside."

I turned toward the window.

Across the street, a black car sat beneath a streetlamp.

A man stepped out.

He placed a large white envelope on the sidewalk.

Then he drove away.

Massimo immediately called security.

Within minutes, the envelope was recovered and examined.

Inside was a photograph.

A photograph of the abandoned greenhouse.

On its back were four words.

COME BACK TO THE BEGINNING.

Massimo stared at it.

"He wants us at the greenhouse."

Brooks shook her head.

"You're not going."

I looked at her.

"He's not going to stop."

"That's why we're going to arrest him."

Massimo nodded.

"Then we do it your way."

I looked at him in surprise.

He gave me a small smile.

"You're not the only one learning to trust people."

The police prepared a carefully controlled operation.

I was not going to the greenhouse.

Neither was Massimo.

Instead, investigators used Carlo's demand to arrange a monitored exchange through legal representatives.

At eleven forty-five that night, Carlo appeared at the abandoned property.

He believed he was meeting a lawyer carrying signed documents.

Instead, Detective Brooks was waiting with a team of officers.

Carlo tried to flee.

He didn't get far.

By midnight, he was in custody.

Vittorio, recovering from surgery under police guard, agreed to cooperate with investigators.

The evidence from the greenhouse, necklace, and Hannah's flash drive connected the financial fraud to Carlo and several associates.

For the first time in years, the truth was finally stronger than the lies.

I stood beside Massimo when Brooks called with the news.

"It's over," she said.

I looked at him.

He looked at me.

Neither of us spoke.

Then I started crying.

Massimo pulled me into his arms.

And I realized something extraordinary.

The nightmare that began in his bedroom had finally ended.

But our real story was only beginning.
