Chapter 8 - The Scent of Lavender and Salt

The night exploded into violence.

Lorenzo surged to his feet, grabbing Dante’s fallen weapon and thrusting it into his belt. He didn't grab Vivian roughly; he placed a firm, protective hand behind her back, guiding her through the alley.

"The docks," Vivian said, her mind instantly switching into survival mode. "My apartment is compromised. The main road out of Camden will be blocked by their convoy. We need water."

Lorenzo looked at her, astonished even in the midst of chaos by her razor-sharp tactical instincts. "Can you get us a boat?"

"One of the draftsmen I work with keeps a thirty-foot twin-engine cruiser at slip fourteen," she said, running alongside him through the misty labyrinth of the marina. "I have the emergency spare keys in my office bag."

Behind them, tires shrieked against wet asphalt. Headlights swept across the weathered cedar shingles of the harbor buildings. Men were shouting in Italian and English, the harsh metallic racks of assault rifles echoing over the water.

They reached slip fourteen. The wooden dock creaked beneath their boots. Vivian jumped onto the fiberglass deck of the cruiser, pulled her keys from her bag, and unlocked the cabin door, flipping the battery switches.

Lorenzo stood on the stern, his eyes scanning the fog-drenched pier.

Three figures emerged from the shadows near the harbor master’s shack, black tactical gear outlining their silhouettes.

"Falcone!" one of them shouted, raising an MP5.

Lorenzo drew both weapons, firing four rapid, deadly shots. The first man collapsed backwards into the dark water with a massive splash. The other two dove for cover behind the fuel pumps, returning fire.

Bullets tore through the fiberglass hull of the cruiser, shattering the windshield into a storm of crystalline shards.

"Get down!" Lorenzo roared, throwing his large body over Vivian as she reached for the ignition.

The twin engines roared to life, a deep, throaty growl vibrating through the hull.

Vivian slammed the throttles forward. The cruiser lunged against its heavy mooring lines.

"The stern line!" Vivian shouted over the scream of the engines and the deafening clatter of gunfire. "Lorenzo, cut the stern line!"

Lorenzo vaulted to the rear deck, drawing a heavy tactical blade from his boot. He slashed the thick braided rope with two brutal, desperate strokes.

A volley of gunfire erupted from the pier.

Lorenzo felt a sledgehammer slam into his right shoulder, followed instantly by a searing, white-hot agony tearing through his left flank. The impact threw him backward against the vinyl seating, the breath exploding from his lungs.

The boat tore free of the dock, cutting through the black water of Penobscot Bay, throwing up a violent white wake as it vanished into the dense Atlantic fog.

"Lorenzo!"

Vivian set the autopilot toward the open ocean and scrambled back to the deck.

Lorenzo was slumped against the railing, his face as gray as the sea mist, dark crimson blood rapidly soaking through his wool coat, pooling around his boots.

Vivian dropped to her knees beside him. Her hands—the same hands that had once trimmed his collars and served his scotch—moved with brutal efficiency. She ripped open his coat, tearing his linen shirt to expose the wounds.

The shoulder wound was clean, a through-and-through puncture. But the shot to his flank was catastrophic—a jagged entry wound spilling dark, arterial blood near his liver.

"Look at me," Vivian commanded, her voice fierce, pressing both palms firmly against the wound.

Lorenzo coughed, a thin line of blood trickling from the corner of his mouth. He looked up at her through half-lidded, unfocused eyes, but when his gaze locked onto her face, a faint, heartbreaking smile touched his lips.

"You're... you're safe," he whispered, his voice barely audible above the hum of the marine engines. "The fog... they can't track us in the fog."

"Shut up," Vivian snapped, tears finally spilling over her eyelashes, hot and angry. "Don't you dare die on this boat, Lorenzo. Don't you dare leave me with your blood on my hands again!"

"Vivian," Lorenzo gasped, his large, calloused hand reaching up, trembling, to touch her cheek. His skin was freezing cold. "I meant... what I said. In the alley. Every word."

"Save your breath!" She pulled an emergency flare kit from beneath the bench, using the heavy canvas wrap to bind his torso with savage pressure. "I told you, words mean nothing!"

"I loved you," Lorenzo murmured, his vision swimming, his head falling back against the fiberglass. "I loved you from the moment you walked down the aisle in that ridiculous white dress... I was just... too weak to deserve you."

His hand slipped from her cheek, dropping limply to the bloody deck.

His eyes rolled back.

"Lorenzo!" Vivian screamed, shaking his shoulders. "Lorenzo!"

May you like

The boat charged forward into the black, unforgiving expanse of the Atlantic, the fog swallowing them whole, leaving only the sound of the waves and the dying pulse of a king beneath her trembling hands.
