Chapter 15 - Standing Tall

|
One year later, the grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was filled with six hundred guests.
Crystal chandeliers cast a golden glow over shimmering silk gowns, black tuxedos, and cascades of white orchids.
The annual gala for Moretti Hospitality was celebrating the most profitable and clean fiscal year in the corporation's history.
Over thirty million dollars in legitimate logistics contracts had been secured across the Midwest.
The employee health and emergency fund, established with recovered extortion assets, had already assisted over two hundred working families across Chicago.
I stood near the balcony doors, holding a glass of vintage champagne.
I wore an emerald green silk gown that brushed the polished marble floor.
My hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, secured with diamond pins.
There was no canvas bag.
There was no limp.
There was no fear lurking in the shadows of my mind.
"Penny for your thoughts, Miss Hale?"
Dante’s voice spoke warmly behind me.
I turned to see him standing there, looking breathtakingly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo with satin lapels.
His dark eyes looked at me with an intensity that still made my heart flutter after twelve months.
"I was thinking about the first time I entered your office," I said, smiling softly.
"Late, limping, clutching a canvas bag, and terrified you would see right through me."
Dante walked up beside me, resting his hand against the small of my back.
"I did see through you, Elena," he whispered, leaning down so only I could hear.
"I saw the strongest, bravest woman I had ever met."
"A woman who refused to yield to a world that tried to crush her."
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, velvet jeweler's box.
My breath caught in my throat.
"Dante," I gasped, looking from the box to his eyes.
He opened the box, revealing a magnificent emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the ballroom lights like a miniature sun.
"One year ago, you refused to accept a handout," Dante said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with devotion.
"You fought for your freedom, and then you fought for mine."
"You taught me that strength isn't about fear or violence—it's about truth and loyalty."
Dante dropped down onto one knee before me, right in the center of the grand ballroom.
The music stopped.
Six hundred of the city’s most powerful executives, politicians, and family associates fell completely silent.
Frank Rossi stood in the front row, wiping a tear from his silver mustache.
"Elena Hale," Dante spoke, his voice carrying clearly across the silent hall.
"Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife, my partner, and the queen of my life?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over my eyelashes and ran down my cheeks.
I looked down at the man who had knelt before me when I was broken, and who was kneeling before me now to offer me his world.
"Yes," I whispered through my tears.
"Yes, Dante, a thousand times yes."
The ballroom erupted into deafening applause and cheers.
Dante stood up, slid the diamond onto my finger, and pulled me into his arms.
His lips met mine in a fierce, passionate kiss that sealed our past, our present, and our unyielding future together.
As he lifted me in his arms, the applause echoing off the gilded ceiling, I knew my debt had been paid in full.

I was no longer running from the shadows.
I was standing tall in the light, beloved, protected, and home.
