Chapter 11 - Stolen Valor Exposed

|

The federal trial docket in the Eastern District of Virginia moved with the unstoppable force of a tidal wave.

When the federal forensic accountants finished unraveling Derek’s financial empire, the sheer scale of his depravity shocked even the seasoned investigators.

Derek’s so-called "Patriot Defense Initiative" had raised over four million dollars from patriotic citizens, corporate donors, and church groups across the country.

The promotional brochures had featured stock photographs of combat veterans, claiming the funds provided prosthetic limbs and mental health care to wounded SEALs.

In reality, not a single dollar had ever reached a wounded veteran.

Bank records showed that Derek had used the charity’s primary bank account to pay for his five-thousand-dollar-a-month apartment in Virginia Beach.

He had paid for private jet charters to Miami, VIP tables at luxury nightclubs, and a seventy-foot luxury yacht named The Conqueror.

Even worse, Derek had repeatedly listed himself on federal grant applications as a "former special operations logistics coordinator."

He had literally fabricated a military service record, complete with a forged DD-214 discharge certificate, to qualify for minority-veteran government contracts.

The local newspaper ran a front-page exposé with the headline: "THE STOLEN VALOR OF DEREK HOLLOWAY: HOW A SOCIETY PLAYBOY PROFITED OFF WOUNDED WARRIORS."

The national outrage was immediate and ferocious.

Veteran advocacy groups staged massive peaceful protests outside the federal courthouse in Alexandria where his pre-trial hearings were held.

Social media erupted with campaigns demanding the maximum statutory penalty for his crimes.

Patricia was not spared from the wreckage.

The federal grand jury named her as an unindicted co-conspirator after documents proved she had co-signed fraudulent tax filings for Derek’s sham foundation.

While she avoided prison due to her age, the federal government seized all of her private bank accounts to satisfy restitution orders.

Her diamond jewelry, her furs, her luxury automobiles, and her antique silver were all confiscated and auctioned off to repay the defrauded donors.

She was forced to move into a tiny, rundown one-bedroom apartment on the industrial outskirts of Richmond, paid for by her meager Social Security check.

The women she had spent decades judging at the country club crossed the street whenever they saw her coming.

Her phone calls went straight to voicemail.

Her invitations were shredded.

The society she had worshipped had cast her out into the cold, exactly as she had cast me out twenty-five years before.

I read the morning intelligence briefings in my office, tracking the progress of the federal case with detached professional interest.

There was no joy in watching my family self-destruct, but there was a deep, unshakeable sense of cosmic balance.

They had spent decades sowing seeds of arrogance, deceit, and cruelty.

Now, the harvest was coming in, and every single grain was bitter.

Master Chief Keating knocked on my office door, stepping inside with a clipboard under his arm.

"Captain Vance," Keating said, coming to attention.

"The federal prosecutor’s office called, ma'am."

"The sentencing hearing for Derek Holloway has been scheduled for Friday morning."

"The U.S. Attorney requested your presence to deliver an official victim impact statement."

I looked out the window at the gray waters of the bay, watching an aircraft carrier glide smoothly toward the open ocean.

"Tell the prosecutor I will be there, Master Chief."

"In full dress uniform."
