Chapter 9 - The Exile

|

Sophia scrambled backward until her spine hit the solid wood of the entrance foyer.

“What are you doing to me, Vincent?” she shrieked, clawing at the polished floorboards.

“You promised my father you would always protect me!”

Vincent looked down at her with an expression of complete, absolute revulsion.

“Your father died taking a bullet meant for Don Salvatore,” Vincent said, his voice flat and dead.

“For ten years, this family honored his sacrifice by giving you an empire of unearned luxury.”

“We gave you penthouses, luxury vehicles, private education, and millions in spending allowances.”

“And in return, you used our loyalty to murder my family from the inside out.”

Marco stepped forward, carrying a stack of legal documents and a heavy metal lockbox.

“The deed to the Lincoln Park townhome has been revoked under the family trust clause,” Marco announced in a dry, administrative drone.

“The Porsche Cayman registered in your name was seized forty minutes ago by our recovery agents.”

“All bank accounts linked to Moretti commercial subsidiaries have been permanently frozen.”

Sophia gasped, clutching her chest as if she were having a heart attack.

“You can’t leave me with nothing!” she screamed, her voice cracking into shrill hysterics.

“I have nowhere to go!”

“I don't have a job!”

Vincent walked over to the front door and pushed it wide open, revealing the cold, windy private elevator landing.

“You have exactly ten minutes to gather whatever clothes can fit into two standard suitcases,” Vincent commanded.

“After that, my men will escort you to O'Hare International Airport.”

“You will board a one-way flight to Florida, where you have distant relatives who can tolerate your presence.”

Sophia lunged forward, trying to grab the cuffs of his trousers with her manicured fingers.

“Vincent, please!”

“Don't throw me away like garbage!”

Vincent stepped back, avoiding her touch as if she were carrying the plague.

“If your face is ever captured on a surveillance camera within the state borders of Illinois again, Sophia, I will not call the police.”

His dark eyes bored into hers with a promise that chilled her blood to absolute ice.

“I will treat you as an enemy combatant of the Moretti syndicate.”

“Do you understand what happens to enemy combatants?”

Sophia shuddered, the final remnants of her arrogant facade crumbling into pure, unadulterated terror.

She scrambled to her feet, abandoning her shoes and her dignity, stumbling toward the guest suite to pack whatever she could salvage.

Twenty minutes later, the elevator doors closed behind her, carrying the architect of his misery out of Vincent's life forever.

Vincent stood alone in the vast, echoing penthouse.

He had purged the serpent from his garden.

He had punished the lies that had blinded him.

Yet as he turned back to face the vast, silent rooms, the hollow victory tasted like ash in his mouth.

Sophia was gone, but the empty crib remained.

And the woman he truly loved was somewhere out in the vast, cold world, running from the monster he had been.
