Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Massacre

The heavy double doors clicked shut behind us, the sound echoing sharply against the wood-paneled walls.
The room instantly fell silent.
Fourteen high-level European finance executives turned in their leather swivel chairs, looking at us in utter confusion.
Daniel didn't look up immediately.
He was leaning over the signature page, fountain pen poised half an inch above the crisp white parchment.
“Mr. Lindstrom, I believe you’ll find the escrow verification on page twelve—” Daniel began.
“I wouldn't sign that if I were you, Daniel.”
My voice cut through the air like a razor blade.
Daniel froze.
Every muscle in his back locked solid.
Slowly, as if turning through deep water, Daniel raised his head.
His eyes locked onto mine.
The color drained from his face with terrifying speed, turning his sun-kissed Southern complexion into the color of wet chalk.
His mouth opened slightly, but no sound came out.
Beside him, Vanessa gasped, her coffee cup shaking so violently that dark liquid spilled across the white linen tablecloth.
“N-Nora?” Daniel stammered, his voice cracking into a high, pathetic squeak.
“What… what are you doing in Oslo?”
I took three slow, measured steps toward the table, my heels clicking with absolute authority on the parquet floor.
Michael walked up beside me, placing both hands casually in his suit pockets.
Vanessa’s eyes shifted from me to Michael, and her entire face twisted in horror.
“Michael?” she whispered, clutching the edge of the table.
“Good morning, darling,” Michael said smoothly, his tone light and conversational.
“You looked beautiful on stage Saturday night.”
“Though I must say, blue has never been your best color.”
Chairman Lindstrom stood up, his bushy gray eyebrows drawing together in deep concern.
“Excuse me,” Lindstrom said, looking between us and Daniel.
“Who are these people?”
“Mr. Vance, who is this woman?”
Daniel dropped his fountain pen.
It rolled across the contract, leaving an ugly black streak of ink across the signature line.
“She’s… she’s nobody,” Daniel lied frantically, his voice trembling with panicked desperation.
“She’s my… she’s an estranged relative from the States.”
“She’s mentally unstable, Chairman Lindstrom.”
“Security! Call security immediately and have them removed from this floor!”
“Don't bother, Chairman Lindstrom,” I said, lifting my chin and looking directly down the length of the table.
“My name is Nora Sterling Vance.”
“I am the sole surviving heir and primary trustee of the Sterling Heritage Trust.”
“And the man standing before you is not a visionary global financier.”
“He is my husband.”
“A petty embezzler who stole my family’s property while I was grieving my father’s death.”
A collective gasp rippled through the European board members.
Daniel’s face flushed a deep, violent crimson.
“Nora, shut your mouth!” he roared, slamming his palms down on the table.
“You have no right to come in here and destroy my life!”
“You gave me full power of attorney!”
“You signed the restructuring papers yourself!”
“He’s right!” Vanessa shrieked, jumping to her feet.
“We have legal power of attorney!”
“We have the court decrees!”
“She signed them in North Carolina!”
I reached into my handbag and pulled out the certified injunction from The Hague, tossing it onto the center of the table.
It slid across the polished wood, stopping right in front of Chairman Lindstrom.
“Power of attorney obtained through material fraud and deliberate nondisclosure is void under both North Carolina law and international commercial statute,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and ringing with absolute confidence.
“Furthermore, Mr. Vance lacks the primary capital asset required for this bond issue.”
Lindstrom put on his reading glasses, rapidly scanning the legal injunction.
His eyes grew wider with every passing second.
“Mr. Vance,” Lindstrom said, his voice dropping into arctic disapproval.
“This document indicates that all Sterling Trust capital assets have been frozen by an emergency order of the International Chamber of Commerce as of seven o'clock this morning.”
“That’s impossible!” Vanessa yelled, her composure completely disintegrating.
“The accounts are in Zurich!”
“They’re registered under Vance & Cole Offshore!”
Michael pulled his laptop from his leather satchel and turned the screen toward the board.
“The Zurich accounts have been liquidated, Vanessa,” Michael said calmly.
“The forty-two million dollars you so carefully laundered has already been repatriated to the Sterling Trust master account in Charlotte.”
“As for Vance & Cole Global?”
Michael hit a key on his keyboard.
“Your corporate registration in Luxembourg was suspended forty minutes ago for criminal conspiracy.”
“Your personal credit cards are declined.”
“Your corporate assets are zero.”
“You are completely broke.”
Daniel stumbled backward, his knees hitting his chair.
He collapsed into the leather seat, staring at the screen in pure disbelief.
“No…” he whispered, clawing at his hair.
“No, no, no… this can't be happening…”
“Daniel,” Vanessa hissed, grabbing his arm and shaking him frantically.
“Do something! Fix this!”
Daniel looked up at her, his eyes wild with terror.
“Fix it?” he screamed at her, swatting her hand away with savage disgust.
“How am I supposed to fix it?”
“You told me this was airtight!”
“You told me your forensic accounting methods were invisible!”
“You dragged me into this, you greedy bitch!”
“I dragged *you* in?” Vanessa shrieked back, her face contorted with rage.
“You were begging me to help you steal her money!”
“You hated her!”
“You told me every single night that touching her made you sick to your stomach!”
The room fell into a mortified silence.
The fourteen board members looked at the screaming couple with pure revulsion.
Daniel realized what he had just said in front of the entire board.
He turned toward me, his chest heaving, tears of desperate panic filling his eyes.
He fell to his knees on the parquet floor, crawling toward me across the carpet.
“Nora… please,” Daniel wept, reaching out to grab the hem of my suit trousers.
“Nora, sweetheart, listen to me!”
“She manipulated me!”
“Vanessa seduced me, she threatened to expose my private debts, she forced me to sign those papers!”
“I love you, Nora!”
“Everything I did, I did to build an empire for us!”
“For our future!”
I looked down at the man I had loved for four years.
I felt no anger.
I felt no grief.
I felt only complete, profound disgust.
I raised my left hand, letting the morning sunlight catch the antique Burmese sapphire ring resting on my finger.
Daniel stopped crawling, staring at the ring in absolute horror.
“Happy fourth anniversary, Daniel,” I whispered.
Two uniformed officers of the Oslo Financial Crimes Unit pushed through the boardroom doors, followed by a senior investigator from Interpol.
May you like
“Daniel Vance? Vanessa Cole?” the lead officer stated, unhooking two pairs of steel handcuffs from his belt.
“You are under arrest for international wire fraud, corporate forgery, and grand larceny.”
