Chapter 6 - The Black Suburbans

|
The grandfather clock had barely struck seven that evening when the rumble of heavy engines shook the front windows of the house.
A pair of black Chevrolet Suburbans with tinted windows and government plates turned into the quiet suburban cul-de-sac.
The neighborhood was accustomed to the modest sedans of retired captains, but these vehicles carried an unmistakable aura of federal authority.
Curtains twitched in the houses across the street as neighbors peered outside into the gathering dusk.
The two large SUVs pulled directly into my father's meticulously swept driveway, parking bumper-to-bumper behind my rental car.
Four men stepped out of the vehicles, dressed in dark civilian suits with discreet communication earpieces curled behind their ears.
My father sprang from his armchair, his retired military instincts flaring with alarm.
"Who in the world is parking on my private concrete?" my father barked, marching toward the front door with righteous indignation.
"This is a private residence, not a government motor pool!" he shouted, throwing the heavy wooden door wide open.
A tall man with silver hair and a sharp jawline stepped onto the welcome mat, ignoring my father's bluster completely.
"Captain Thomas Callahan?" the man inquired in a calm, professional tone.
"I am Special Agent Robert Vance, Naval Criminal Investigative Service, attached to the Office of Naval Intelligence," the agent introduced himself.
He held up a gold badge encased in black leather, flashing it briefly before sliding it back into his breast pocket.
My father took an involuntary step backward, his chest tightening as his voice dropped an octave.
"Is there a problem, Agent?" my father asked, his military arrogance instantly dissolving into civilian anxiety.
"We are not here for you, sir," Agent Vance replied, looking past my father's shoulder into the hallway.
"We are here for Captain Erin Callahan," the agent announced, his eyes locking onto mine as I walked into the foyer.
My mother hurried down the stairs, clutching a cardigan over her chest, her face pale with terror.
"Erin? What have you done?" my mother cried out, assuming the worst out of ingrained habit.
"Did you bring federal agents to our home to arrest you?" my mother gasped, trembling at the thought of a neighborhood scandal.
Agent Vance offered my mother a cool, unimpressed look that caused her to freeze in place.
"Ma'am, your daughter is not under arrest," Agent Vance clarified with chilling precision.
"We are here to deliver the formal notification of her nomination to the White House Fellowships and her assignment as Deputy Director of Maritime Operations," the agent stated.
He opened a leather briefing folder, revealing documents bearing the embossed gold seal of the Department of the Navy.
"Furthermore, we are under direct orders from Fleet Command to secure Captain Callahan's classified personal effects," Agent Vance added.
"We have reason to believe that certain sensitive tactical documentation was brought to this location," the agent explained.

My father stood paralyzed in the entryway, looking back and forth between the armed federal agents and the daughter he had treated like an outcast.
The suburban fantasy he had maintained for fifteen years was fracturing into a thousand jagged pieces right on his front porch.
