Chapter 12 - The Iron Fortress

The solarium’s reinforced glass didn't shatter—it spider-webbed violently under a hail of heavy-caliber armor-piercing rounds. The screech of lead impacting ballistic laminate sounded like giant sledgehammers smashing against ice.

Dominic had his massive frame wrapped entirely over mine, his back absorbing the impact of concrete chips and vibrating shockwaves. The smell of his expensive cologne mixed with the pungent stench of cordite and pulverized stone.

"Enzo! Suppressive fire! Drop the courtyard gates!" Dominic barked into his lapel comm, his left arm locked like an iron band around my ribs while his right hand returned blind fire over the balustrade.

Below us, the night erupted.

The estate's automated defensive turrets hidden inside the stone gargoyles whirred to life, spitting high-caliber death into the driveway. One of Falcone’s tactical guards was cut in half instantly, his body flung violently into the manicured hedges.

"They brought a second bird!" Enzo’s voice crackled through Dominic’s earpiece, panicked and strained. "Boss, north tree line! Fast-rope insertion! They’re breaching the east wing conservatory!"

Dominic pulled me up into a low crouch, dragging me beneath the low marble ledge of the terrace. His eyes were ablaze with a terrifying, electric fury. "Can you run?"

"I can run," I gasped, clutching the pearl-handled pistol to my chest.

"Stay behind me. If I drop, you don't stop. You run straight to the safe room behind the wine cellar, lock the vault door, and trigger the gas protocol. Understand?"

"You're not dropping," I snapped back, adrenaline surging through my veins like liquid fire. "Don't you dare die on me, Rossi."

A savage grin split his face. "Not a chance in hell, wife."

He stood, pivoting around the stone pillar, and fired three double-taps down into the courtyard. Two more of Falcone's operators crumpled onto the driveway. But Falcone and my mother were already retreating under the cover of smoke grenades, being shoved backward into the cabin of the Black Hawk by their surviving bodyguards.

"They're extracting!" I yelled over the din.

"They aren't running—they're repositioning!" Dominic corrected. "The helicopter was the distraction. The real kill-team is already inside the east wing!"

A deafening explosion rocked the lower floor of the mansion. The antique chandeliers inside the grand hallway swung violently, showering the parquet floor with crystal shards. Black smoke began to billow from the eastern corridor.

Dominic grabbed my arm, propelling me through the terrace doors back into the solarium, down the mahogany staircase. The house had turned into an abattoir.

Gunfire rattled through the interior corridors. Enzo and half a dozen Rossi soldiers were engaging a squad of men wearing high-tech night-vision gear and unmarked grey fatigues. The invaders moved with military precision—former Italian special forces, mercenaries bought with Falcone's limitless bankroll.

"Boss!" Enzo shouted, leaning out from behind an overturned marble credenza, his MP5 barking in short, controlled bursts. "They breached the library! They're trying to cut the power to the vault!"

Suddenly, the lights flickered and died, plunging the entire estate into pitch-black darkness.

Only the red emergency strips along the baseboards cast a bloody, surreal glow across the floor.

From the shadows of the dining room archway, two figures materialized, their rifle barrels leveling directly at Dominic's back.

Dominic was already turning to engage a threat to our left. He didn't see them.

My mind went blank. The fear, the trauma, the months of feeling like a victim vanished in an instant of sheer, instinctual survival.

I raised the pearl-handled pistol.

*Keep your finger off the trigger until you intend to end a life.*

I squeezed the trigger. Twice.

The weapon kicked hard against my wrists, the deafening cracks echoing through the corridor. The first mercenary took a bullet straight through his neck, his rifle clattering to the floor as he choked on his own blood, collapsing like a sack of stones.

The second shooter turned his weapon toward me, but the distraction was all Dominic needed.

With a roar like an enraged beast, Dominic closed the distance in a fraction of a second. He grabbed the barrel of the mercenary’s assault rifle, wrenching it upward as a burst tore into the ceiling plaster. In the same motion, Dominic drove a combat knife upward beneath the man’s tactical helmet, straight into the soft flesh under his jaw.

The man convulsed once and went limp. Dominic shoved the corpse away, turning to look at me in the dim crimson emergency light.

His eyes swept over me, taking in the smoking gun in my hands, the steady posture of my feet, the cold determination on my face.

"Good shot," he breathed, wiping a smear of blood from his cheek with the back of his hand.

"You taught me well," I whispered, though my hands were finally beginning to shake as the reality of taking a life caught up to me.

He grabbed my face with his bloodied hand, forcing me to look directly into his eyes. "You saved my life, Tessa. Remember that. You aren't their victim. You are their executioner."

Before I could answer, the roar of the helicopter outside faded into the distance.

The gunfire inside the estate abruptly ceased, replaced only by the groaning of wounded men, the hiss of broken pipes, and the crackle of burning drywall.

Enzo came limping down the corridor, his arm clutching a flesh wound on his shoulder, his tactical vest scorched. "Boss. They've pulled back. Perimeter sensors report the secondary strike team is retreating through the woods to secondary vehicles."

Dominic stepped back, his tactical eyes scanning the carnage of his home.

"They got what they wanted," Enzo added grimly, holding up a charred piece of metal.

Dominic’s voice dropped into sub-zero ice. "What did they take, Enzo?"

May you like

"They didn't come to take Tessa," Enzo said, his face pale in the red emergency light. "They came to confirm the biometric signal. They had a scanner array mounted on that secondary insertion team. They pinged her DNA markers from sixty feet away. Falcone now has the exact cryptographic sequence of the Vance vault."
