Chapter 6 - Bloodlines and Blackmail

The counterattack from the Sterling camp arrived not with legal briefs, but with the ruthless, desperate savagery of a dying predator.
By Thursday morning, tabloid websites and social media platforms were flooded with salacious, weaponized headlines targeting my character.
Photos of me leaving upscale restaurants with corporate clients over the past three years had been maliciously cropped and captioned to suggest chronic infidelity.
Anonymous sources claimed I had embezzled funds from Vanguard to finance a secret gambling addiction.
Robert was using his deep connections in the media to poison the public well before the federal grand jury could convene.
At noon, my personal phone rang from an unlisted number.
I answered, keeping the recording function active on my laptop.
"Enjoying the headlines, Sarah?" Richard's voice sneered through the receiver.
The nasal splints had clearly been adjusted; his voice sounded sharper, fueled by reckless, amphetamine-laced adrenaline.
"Is this the best you and your father can do, Richard?" I asked, leaning back in my home office chair.
"Smear campaigns on third-tier gossip blogs?"
"It's just the opening salvo, darling," Richard hissed.
"Let's see how your precious forensic accounting career survives when the Manhattan District Attorney receives the unredacted files on your younger brother, Leo."
My heart slammed against my ribs, but my voice remained completely level, masking the sudden spike of fear.
"Leo has nothing to do with this, Richard."
"Doesn't he?" Richard laughed, a cruel, barking sound that grated on my nerves.
"Poor little Leo... struggling with his startup software firm in Austin."
"Did you really think I didn't notice the fifty-thousand-dollar personal loan you wired him two years ago from our joint account?"
"My father’s investigators spent the last twenty-four hours digging into his little company's intellectual property."
"Turns out, Leo’s core software algorithm bears an uncanny resemblance to proprietary code owned by one of our tech subsidiaries."
"Arthur Vance’s replacement filed a federal patent infringement and corporate espionage complaint against Leo in the Western District of Texas this morning."
"By tomorrow, your little brother will be facing twenty years in federal prison and legal defense fees that will bankrupt your entire family."
I clenched my jaw so hard I could hear the enamel grind.
Leo was an innocent, brilliant software engineer who had spent his entire life avoiding the corrupt world I navigated daily.
Targeting him was Robert and Richard’s ultimate signature move: destroying the defenseless to force the strong into submission.
"What do you want, Richard?" I asked, keeping my tone coldly transactional.
"I want total capitulation, Sarah," Richard demanded, his arrogance surging back with venomous intensity.
"You deliver my mother back to the Westchester estate by six o'clock tonight."
"You sign a full retraction of all SEC disclosures, certifying under penalty of perjury that your audit findings were based on flawed, unauthorized assumptions."
"You deliver every hard drive, every backup server, and every document Arthur Vance gave you."
"And then you sign an uncontested divorce decree waiving every single cent of alimony, asset distribution, or legal fees."
"Do that, and the patent lawsuit against Leo disappears."
"Refuse, and I will personally watch your brother get marched out of his office in handcuffs on national television."
"I need two hours to confer with Martha and prepare the documents," I said, playing for critical time.
"You have until five o'clock," Richard snapped.
"Not a minute later."
The line clicked dead.
I sat in the quiet office for ten seconds, drawing in slow, deep breaths, allowing the cold fury in my blood to settle into crystalline, analytical focus.
They thought they had cornered me.
They thought targeting my brother was an unblockable checkmate.
They had forgotten who wrote the code for the forensic tracking systems they were currently trying to weaponize.
I opened my laptop, bypassing the standard operating system and booting directly into a secure virtual machine loaded with proprietary data-scraping utilities.
"You want to play with software patents, Richard?" I murmured to the empty room.
"Let's see who really owns the code."
I initiated a deep-level algorithmic crawl of the tech subsidiary Richard claimed owned Leo’s intellectual property—a shell entity called NexaCore Technologies.
For two hours, the screen flashed with cascading lines of hexadecimal code, corporate filings, and encrypted server logs.
What I found was far more explosive than simple patent trolling.
NexaCore Technologies hadn't developed any proprietary algorithms.
The entire company was a massive, sophisticated data-laundering conduit designed to facilitate unauthorized surveillance on political figures, judges, and corporate rivals.
Buried deep within the root directory of NexaCore’s primary offshore server in Zurich was a folder labeled *Operation Oversight*.
I unlocked the secondary encryption layer using a brute-force decryption key I had extracted from Arthur Vance’s personal files earlier that morning.
The folder opened.
Inside lay thousands of audio recordings, wiretapped phone calls, and intercepted text messages.
Robert Sterling hadn't just bribed politicians and judges.
He had systematically blackmailed them.
There were recorded conversations with the very Manhattan District Attorney Richard had threatened to unleash on me, discussing illegal campaign donations funneled through foreign accounts.
There were photographs of federal appellate judges accepting luxury vacations arranged by Arthur Vance.
The Sterling dynasty was not built on legitimate influence or industrial genius.
It was an organized criminal enterprise masquerading as a blue-blood family office, held together by extortion, physical terror, and systemic blackmail.
And the digital master key to the entire blackmail archive had just landed directly in my hands.
I picked up my phone, dialed Evelyn Cross’s direct private line, and spoke three words that would seal the fate of the entire Sterling bloodline.
"Evelyn," I said, watching the progress bar hit one hundred percent as the files transferred onto an encrypted server.
"Call the FBI Public Corruption Unit."
May you like
"Tell them we have the keys to the entire city."
