Chapter 8 - THE REUNION OF SHADOWS

|

The wooden toy airplane fell from the little boy’s fingers, clattering softly against the pine floorboards.

Luca did not move an inch.

The man who commanded hundreds of soldiers and controlled shipping lines worth millions of dollars dropped to both knees right onto the braided rug in the hallway.

His broad shoulders shook as a silent, heartbreaking sob broke from his chest.

He had spent four years believing his legacy was only death, blood, and cold marble floors.

Now, looking at the little boy standing five feet away, he was looking at his own beating heart living outside his body.

“Mateo,” Elena whispered, her voice cracking with sweet, painful tears as she knelt beside her son.

“This... this is your father.”

The little boy tilted his head, his wide gray eyes studying Luca’s face with innocent, fearless curiosity.

“My daddy from the sky?” Mateo asked, looking at the ceiling, then back at Luca.

“Mommy said my daddy was an eagle who had to fly high to protect us from the wolves.”

Luca let out a choked laugh through his tears, reaching up with shaking hands to wipe his face.

“I’m not in the sky anymore, Mateo,” Luca whispered, his voice trembling with a tenderness that made my own tears spill over.

“I came down to the ground.”

“And I’m never leaving you again.”

Mateo took two cautious steps forward, his small hand reaching out toward Luca’s chest.

He touched the silver lapel pin on Luca’s jacket, then reached up to touch the dark, intricate ink peeking above Luca’s collar.

“You have birds on your neck,” Mateo said, his little fingers brushing the tattooed wings on Luca’s skin.

“They’re eagles, baby,” Luca smiled through his tears, his large, rough hands gently coming to rest on his son’s tiny shoulders.

“Just like you.”

Mateo looked into Luca’s gray eyes, seeing the exact mirror of his own reflection.

Without warning, the little boy threw his small arms around Luca’s neck, burying his face into the hollow of his father’s throat.

Luca closed his arms around his son, pulling him tight against his chest, burying his face in Mateo’s dark curls, weeping openly on the hallway floor.

Four years of stolen birthdays.

Four years of missed milestones and silent holidays.

All of it washed away in five seconds of a child’s unconditional embrace.

Mara leaned against my shoulder, sobbing softly into her hands, while Elena leaned against the doorway, her knees finally giving out as she wept with profound relief.

I stood back near the door, my heart overflowing with a joy so immense it felt like my own chest was bursting.

Luca lifted his head from Mateo’s hair, his eyes meeting Elena’s across the room.

“Why didn't you call me, Elena?” Luca asked softly.

“Even from a payphone. Even one word.”

Elena wiped her cheeks, shaking her head sadly.

“Vanessa sent three men to my apartment in Milwaukee six months after I left, Luca.”

“They stood outside my bedroom window and fired two rounds into the nursery ceiling while Mateo was sleeping in his crib.”

“She called me ten minutes later and told me that if I ever reached out to you, the next bullets wouldn't hit the ceiling.”

“She said that as long as I stayed dead to you, she would let my son breathe.”

Elena looked at me, noticing the way I stood quietly near the entrance, holding Luca’s coat.

“Who is she, Luca?” Elena asked gently.

Luca stood up, carrying Mateo effortlessly on his left hip, his right hand immediately reaching back to find mine.

He pulled me forward into the light of the hallway, his fingers intertwining with mine in front of his former wife and his child.

“This is Claire, Elena,” Luca said, his voice ringing with absolute reverence.

“She is the woman who stood up to Vanessa when nobody else had the courage.”

“She saved Mara’s life, and she brought me back to my son.”
