Chapter 10 - The Night Adrian Died

|
The call about Arthur Bell came while I was changing Salvatore's dressing.
Dominic answered on the second ring and went completely still.
Arthur had been found beaten in the parking garage beneath his office.
He was alive, but barely.
Dominic drove us to Mercy General himself and broke every speed limit.
Nora Bennett met us in the waiting room with her notebook already open.
She said the attackers had taken Arthur's briefcase but not his phone.
Arthur had recorded a voice memo before he lost consciousness.
In that memo his broken voice named the man who opened the garage gate.
He named Frank Deluca.
Frank had carried Adrian's coffin twelve years earlier.
Dominic asked Nora to play the recording one more time.
Then he called the house and spoke in his calmest voice.
He told Frank that Arthur had died on the operating table.
He told Frank to double the guards at every door.
He told Frank no one was to leave without his permission.
Salvatore listened with tears running silently down his face.
When Dominic hung up, Salvatore finally opened that trembling hand.
Inside his palm lay a heavy gold signet ring.
Dominic stared at it like a man seeing a ghost with bare hands.
He whispered that Adrian had been buried wearing that ring.
Salvatore shook his head with fierce and painful effort.
His voice, rough from detox and speech therapy, surprised us all.
He said Adrian was buried wearing a copy.
He said a father knows what truly belongs to his son.
Under the band I read a tiny engraving aloud by phone light.
It said For A R who carried us home.
Salvatore had kept something else hidden for years as well.
From the lining of his old coat Dominic pulled a sealed envelope.
Inside it was a small silver locket holding Adrian's baby tooth.
Beside it was a folded blood card from Adrian's military file.
Salvatore had saved them the way fathers save kindergarten drawings.
Nora sealed both items in front of witnesses and called the state lab.
She said the lab could compare them with saliva from Matteo's dinner glass.
Dominic asked his father why he had waited so long.
Salvatore wrote one shaky line in his therapy notebook.
He wrote that he needed us listening before he risked his only proof.
Then Salvatore asked for water and cleared his throat.
For the first time he told me the night Adrian died.
Twelve years earlier Enzo D'Amato wanted Romano ships to carry uninspected cargo.
Salvatore refused him at a dinner much like the engagement dinner.
He told Enzo they would never carry poison for any man's profit.
Enzo smiled and poured wine and called him an old fashioned fool.
Three nights later Adrian and Dominic inspected a warehouse alarm together.
Adrian was thirty five and Dominic was thirty three.
The car waiting behind the warehouse had been serviced that morning.
Frank Deluca had signed the service sheet himself.
Adrian smelled fuel before Dominic opened the passenger door.
Adrian heard a thin ticking sound beneath the chassis.
He grabbed Dominic by the collar and threw him over a loading barrier.
Salvatore said Adrian took exactly one step toward safety.
The blast lifted the car into the burning air.
Adrian died shielding his little brother with his own body.
Dominic survived with burned hands and a scar along his ribs.
Salvatore wept while he told us the final part.
Adrian had called him minutes before the explosion.
Adrian said the faulty alarm felt wrong.
Adrian said if anything happened, Dominic must be protected first.
A father should never hear his son be brave for the last time.
Dominic knelt beside his father's chair in that waiting room.
He promised Adrian's name would not be stolen to finish Enzo's crime.
Nora's phone rang before any of us could breathe again.
The glass and the pillow hair belonged to the same living man.
That man shared no paternal DNA with Salvatore Romano.
Adrian's blood card matched Salvatore perfectly as father and son.
The living man's profile matched a dental record from Naples.
His real name was Matteo Sartore, Celeste's cousin.
He had vanished from public records for two full years.
Two years of surgery had given him Adrian's scar.
We returned to the estate after midnight with unmarked cars following.
Frank met us at the front steps like a loyal soldier.
Dominic lied and told him Arthur had died in surgery.
He rose and called Salvatore Papa with practiced tenderness.
Salvatore did not answer to that performance.
He held up the real signet ring instead.
Matteo's eyes flickered to the gold for one fatal second.
He asked how Salvatore had gotten it out of the grave.
Dominic set a photograph of Adrian's open casket on the desk.
Salvatore asked Matteo what the real engraving said.
Matteo answered too quickly that it said Strength Before Mercy.
Those words hung on the warehouse wall, not inside any ring.
Dominic repeated the true engraving in a voice that barely held.
Matteo's borrowed smile collapsed completely.
Salvatore asked what Adrian had called Dominic as a boy.
Matteo said Dom, and the room went cold.
Adrian had called him Little Storm for breaking every quiet room.
Matteo's hand shook worse than Salvatore's around his glass.
He admitted Enzo promised him the shipping companies would make him rich.
Frank moved before Matteo could say another word.
I saw his gun before I understood what I was seeing.
Frank pointed it at Matteo and ordered him to stay silent.
Dominic shouted Frank's name like both a warning and a verdict.
Frank swung the weapon toward Dominic instead.
Salvatore threw his notebook and struck Frank's wrist with his weak hand.
The shot buried itself in the ceiling and rained plaster down.
Dominic tackled Frank into the bookshelf before he could fire again.
Nora burst in with two officers and their weapons drawn.
Dominic pinned Frank's gun hand beneath a fallen shelf.
Frank kept screaming that Enzo owned the ports and the future.
Nora cuffed him while he was still shouting Enzo's name.
Matteo sat down hard in Adrian's old chair and covered his face.
He asked if Enzo would kill him now that he had failed.
Dominic told him that depended on the truth he finally told.
Matteo said Enzo had moved the board vote to Friday morning.
He said Enzo would declare Salvatore incompetent before the DNA filing.
He said Frank used the service tunnel to move him for months.
Then Matteo gave us what we had prayed for since Celeste confessed.
He gave us the D'Amato lake property with its locked guest wing.
He said Enzo had moved Lucia there from the villa outside San Vito two nights earlier, exactly as Celeste had feared he would if she talked.
He said Lucia D'Amato was alive there and kept lightly sedated.
He said guards changed shifts at dawn and Enzo expected a loud rescue.
Dominic looked at me across the ruined library.
Enzo wanted a violent rescue to prove Dominic was unstable.
Nora was already dialing for a warrant and a medical team.
Before we left Matteo, Nora received one more call from Mercy General.
Arthur had survived surgery and signed a sworn statement naming Frank as Enzo's messenger.
My phone buzzed then with a photograph from an unknown number.
It showed a young woman asleep in a locked white room.
May you like
Beneath it Enzo had written four terrifying words.
Come alone or she disappears.
