Chapter 13 - THE COVENANT OF LOVE

|

The dining hall erupted into joyous cheers, applause, and emotional tears before I could even find my voice.

Uncle Carmine was pounding the table with his fist, shouting blessings in Italian.

My mother was weeping with pure happiness, clutching Teresa’s hand across the linen tablecloth.

I looked down at the man kneeling before me, seeing the absolute, unshakeable devotion shining in his dark eyes.

There was no doubt in my soul.

There was no hesitation in my mind.

“Yes, Luca,” I whispered, tears of joy spilling over my eyelashes.

“A thousand times, yes.”

Luca’s handsome face lit up with a breathtaking, triumphant smile.

He took the emerald ring from the box and slid it onto the third finger of my left hand.

The ring fit with absolute perfection, catching the candlelight like a star fallen from the heavens.

Luca stood up, wrapped his powerful arms around my waist, and lifted me completely off the floor.

His lips met mine in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our past, present, and future into one unbreakable promise.

The entire room rose to their feet in a thunderous standing ovation.

Teresa stood up, raising her crystal glass high above her head.

“To Donna Hannah Moretti!” Teresa proclaimed, her strong voice ringing through the chandeliers.

“The true queen of this house!”

“To Donna Hannah!” the thirty guests chorused in unison, drinking to our future.

Four months later, the cold Chicago winter surrendered to the magnificent, blooming warmth of spring.

On a sun-drenched Saturday morning in April, the historic Cathedral of the Holy Name was packed to maximum capacity.

Over four hundred guests—city leaders, foreign dignitaries, neighborhood friends, and syndicate elders—filled the ancient limestone nave.

The air was thick with the fragrant scent of burning frankincense and thousands of white roses cascading down the stone pillars.

At the front of the altar stood Luca, looking impossibly striking in a bespoke black tuxedo with a white gardenia pinned over his heart.

The cathedral’s massive pipe organ began the swelling, majestic chords of the wedding march.

The heavy oak doors at the back of the nave swung open, and the entire congregation rose to their feet.

I walked down the long, red-carpeted aisle on the arm of my mother, who walked proudly beside me without a single limp.

My wedding gown was a masterpiece of hand-embroidered Chantilly lace and ivory silk, flowing behind me in a ten-foot cathedral train.

Over my head rested Teresa’s own vintage lace veil, secured by a delicate diamond tiara that had belonged to the Moretti family for three generations.

As my eyes locked with Luca’s across the grand nave, the hundreds of guests seemed to disappear completely.

I saw only the man who had stood beside me, the man who had wiped my tears and defended my dignity against the world.

My mother placed my hand into Luca’s large, warm palm, smiling up at him with complete, maternal trust.

“Take care of my girl, Luca,” my mother whispered.

“With my life, Sarah,” Luca replied with solemn reverence.

We stood together before Cardinal Rossi at the high marble altar, making vows of love, honor, and protection before God and the city.

When Cardinal Rossi pronounced us husband and wife, Luca pulled me into his arms and kissed me with a fierce, tender passion that echoed into eternity.

As we turned to face the cheering congregation as husband and wife, Teresa stood in the front pew, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated triumph.

The house had not been broken.

The family had not been destroyed.

Love had conquered the darkness, and the light would shine forever.
