Chapter 9 - The Crosshairs

The shift in the room was imperceptible to the five hundred laughing, drinking guests, but Evelyn felt it instantly.

Lucien’s posture didn't stiffen—it sharpened. His hand moved from her waist to her elbow, guiding her with quiet, urgent precision toward a private corridor behind the stage drapery.

“Dante,” Lucien commanded without raising his voice. “Lock down the north exits. Move the secondary detail to the service freight elevators. Nobody leaves this building until the perimeter is sanitized.”

“Yes, sir,” Dante murmured, disappearing into the shadows with his hand already resting inside his jacket.

Evelyn followed Lucien into a secure, soundproof administrative office. The heavy oak door clicked shut, muffling the jazz quartet and the laughter of the gala into complete silence.

“Who is Salvatore?” Evelyn asked, her pulse drumming against her throat, though her voice remained steady.

Lucien turned to face her. In the harsh fluorescent lighting of the private office, the scar on his jaw stood out in stark relief. For the first time since she had met him, she saw a flicker of something raw in his gray eyes. Not fear.

Dread.

“Salvatore Marcone,” Lucien said evenly. “He controls the illicit distribution networks along the Brooklyn navy yard. When I pushed our family’s operations into legitimate commerce, his faction lost forty percent of their laundering routes. He has been looking for a fracture in my organization for three years.”

“And he thinks I’m the fracture.”

“He knows you are,” Lucien corrected grimly. “Until forty-eight hours ago, Lucien Moretti had no pressure points. No family. No wife. No personal vulnerabilities that couldn't be replaced with an insurance settlement.”

He stepped toward her, his large hands coming up to cup her face, his thumbs brushing over her cheekbones. His touch was fierce, bordering on painful in its protective intensity.

“I was careless, Evelyn,” he whispered, his jaw clenching. “I brought you into my light before I had completely extinguished the shadows. Adrian was a nuisance. Salvatore is a rabid dog. He sent a squad to the loading docks tonight because he believed he could take you hostage and force me to surrender the port terminal leases.”

Evelyn didn't pull away. She leaned into his touch, her eyes locked with his. “Did they take the docks?”

“Dante’s team neutralized them at the outer security gate,” Lucien said. “There was no shooting inside the venue. But the message was delivered. You are in the crosshairs now.”

He dropped his hands, turning toward the desk and pulling a satellite phone from his pocket. “I have a private jet waiting at Teterboro. Dante will escort you to a secure villa in Switzerland tonight. You will stay there under twenty-four-hour guard until I dismantle Salvatore’s entire network. When it’s over, you can come back. Your business will be untouched.”

Evelyn stared at his back.

A heavy, suffocating wave of deja vu washed over her.

*“You’ll see this is the cleanest cut.”* Adrian’s voice echoed in her memory. Men making decisions for her. Men deciding where she belonged, what she could handle, and how she should be tucked away for her own good.

“No,” she said.

The word was quiet, but it stopped Lucien cold.

He turned slowly. “What did you say?”

“I said no.” Evelyn walked toward him, her emerald silk gown rustling against the commercial carpet. “I am not getting on a plane to Switzerland. And I am not letting you lock me in a gilded cage while you fight a war in the dark.”

“Evelyn, this isn't an argument about corporate strategy!” Lucien’s voice finally broke its icy composure, a terrifying, thunderous roar vibrating in his chest. “These are men who put bullets in people's skulls! If Salvatore touches you, I will burn this entire city to the ground, but that won't bring you back! You are going to Switzerland!”

“If I run now, Lucien, I will be running for the rest of my life!” she fired back, stepping directly into his personal space, refusing to give an inch. “The moment I stepped onto that ballroom floor with your crest on my hip, I chose this. I chose *you*. You told me you wanted someone with a spine. You told me you wanted someone who wouldn't flinch.”

She reached up and grabbed the lapels of his tuxedo, mirroring the exact gesture she had made when she first kissed him at the charity gala.

“Do not treat me like Adrian did,” she whispered fiercely, tears of pure defiance burning in her eyes. “Do not tell me what I can endure. If I am your weakness, then let them come. But you do not hide me away like a mistake.”

Lucien stared at her.

The silence between them stretched, thick and vibrating with an electric, dangerous energy. His breathing was heavy, his chest rising and falling against her hands.

Slowly, the fury in his eyes dissolved into something far more dangerous: total, unconditional reverence.

His arms came around her, pulling her flush against him, his face burying itself in the crook of her neck. He held her with a crushing strength, as if anchoring himself to the only real thing in a world made of smoke and violence.

“You are insane,” he murmured against her skin.

May you like

“Probably,” she whispered, her arms wrapping around his shoulders. “So what’s our next move?”
