Chapter 12 - The Day Colin Hale Lost His Smile

|

Colin Hale arrived at federal court wearing a navy suit worth more than Paige's first car.

His golden hair was perfectly styled.

His expression was calm.

And when reporters called his name, he smiled.

The same smile he'd worn at the wedding.

The same smile he'd given doctors while Paige sat injured beside him.

The same smile he'd used whenever he wanted the world to believe he was a good man.

But Paige wasn't frightened of that smile anymore.

She sat across the street in a parked car with Evelyn.

Her hands were cold.

Her heart was racing.

Yet she didn't look away.

“Are you ready?” Evelyn asked.

Paige took a slow breath.

“No.”

Evelyn nodded.

“That's okay.”

Paige looked toward the courthouse.

Then said, “I'm going anyway.”

Inside, federal prosecutors presented the initial allegations against members of the Hale family.

The financial investigation had uncovered extensive evidence involving offshore accounts, fraudulent transfers, false company ownership records, and payments associated with Lucia Rossy's disappearance.

Richard Hale faced charges connected to financial crimes and the alleged scheme to conceal Lucia's identity.

Victoria Hale faced separate allegations involving payments and false documentation.

Colin faced financial charges and accusations related to coercion, threats, and the use of Paige's identity.

The proceedings were only beginning.

No jury had reached a verdict.

No judge had determined the full extent of their guilt.

But for the first time, the Hale family was being forced to answer questions it could not silence with money.

Paige sat beside Evelyn as the hearing began.

Colin turned.

He saw her.

His smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

Then he recovered.

He leaned toward his attorney and whispered something.

Paige felt the old fear rise.

Her shoulders tightened.

Her breathing shortened.

Then she remembered where she was.

A public courtroom.

With legal counsel.

With documented evidence.

With people who had finally listened.

Colin couldn't simply order her to be quiet.

Not here.

When the hearing ended, reporters crowded the courthouse steps.

Colin's attorney made a statement denying the allegations.

Richard refused to comment.

Victoria looked furious.

Paige remained inside until the crowd dispersed.

As she stood to leave, Arthur—her father—appeared near the rear of the courtroom.

He looked older.

His shoulders were hunched.

The expensive suit he wore at the wedding had been replaced by a wrinkled gray jacket.

“Paige.”

She froze.

For a moment, she was back in the bridal suite.

Her father standing behind her.

Smelling of scotch.

Telling her the debt had been cleared.

Telling her she had to marry Colin.

She looked at Evelyn.

The attorney stepped closer.

“You don't have to speak to him.”

Paige knew.

That was what made the moment different.

She could walk away.

Instead, she looked at Arthur.

“What do you want?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“I wanted to see you.”

She said nothing.

He stepped forward.

“Paige, I'm sorry.”

The words landed without comfort.

He continued.

“I didn't understand what Colin was doing.”

Paige stared at him.

“You saw my bruises.”

Arthur flinched.

“I thought—”

“You knew he hurt me.”

Her voice shook.

“You knew I was afraid.”

Arthur lowered his head.

“I was desperate.”

Paige felt something harden inside her.

“You were desperate to save your company.”

He looked up.

“I was trying to save our family.”

“No.”

Her voice grew stronger.

“You were trying to save yourself.”

Arthur began crying.

Paige looked at him.

For years, she'd imagined this moment.

She thought she would scream.

Or collapse.

Or beg him to explain why his own daughter hadn't been worth protecting.

But standing there, she realized something.

She didn't need his explanation anymore.

“You traded me to a man who hurt me,” she said quietly.

Arthur covered his face.

“I know.”

“You don't get to call that love.”

The words hung between them.

Then Paige stepped backward.

“I hope you get help, Dad.”

He looked up desperately.

“Will you forgive me?”

Paige considered the question.

Then answered honestly.

“I don't know.”

He began crying harder.

“But I know I won't let you decide my future again.”

She turned and walked away.

Outside, sunlight warmed the courthouse steps.

Paige breathed deeply.

For the first time in years, the air felt like it belonged to her.

That evening, Gabriel called from a meeting with his attorneys.

He asked how the hearing went.

Paige told him.

Including the conversation with Arthur.

When she finished, Gabriel was silent for a moment.

Then said, “I'm proud of you.”

Paige smiled sadly.

“I didn't feel brave.”

“Bravery rarely feels comfortable.”

She laughed softly.

Then asked, “How are things on your end?”

Gabriel hesitated.

“Complicated.”

“Meaning?”

“I'm cooperating with investigators about certain activities within my organization.”

Paige went still.

“Gabriel.”

“I know.”

“Could you go to prison?”

“Yes.”

The honesty hurt.

She sat down.

“Are you afraid?”

A long silence followed.

Then he answered.

“Yes.”

Paige closed her eyes.

She had begun caring about this man.

More than she'd intended.

More than was sensible.

But she also knew his past wasn't something love could erase.

“Then why do it?” she whispered.

Gabriel's voice softened.

“Because Lucia deserves a brother who stops making excuses.”

Paige wiped her eyes.

“And you?”

“What about me?”

“Don't you deserve a chance to become someone different?”

He was silent.

Then he whispered, “I'm beginning to think I might.”

A week later, prosecutors announced that Colin had been charged with additional offenses after new evidence emerged.

Several former employees had come forward.

So had Marisol Vega, his longtime housekeeper.

She described years of threats, intimidation, and concealed injuries.

And she revealed something that changed the entire investigation.

Colin had kept a private archive.

Videos.

Messages.

Financial records.

Documents he used to threaten people.

Investigators recovered it under a warrant.

Among the files was an audio recording from the night Paige's ribs were broken.

Colin's voice was unmistakable.

If you ever tell anyone what happened, I'll make sure they think you're crazy.

Then came Paige's voice.

Small.

Terrified.

Please, Colin. I just want to go home.

For years, he'd insisted she was lying.

May you like

Now his own recording preserved the truth.

And for the first time, Colin Hale had no beautiful smile left to hide behind.
