Chapter 12 - THE SURGERY THAT COULDN'T WAIT ANY LONGER|

For six months, Sarah had lived with a calendar hanging beside her refrigerator.

Every appointment was circled in blue.

Every medical bill was written in red.

And the date of Lily's heart surgery had been marked with a small pink heart.

Sarah had spent countless nights staring at that calendar, wondering how she would pay for everything.

Now the financial burden was being addressed through a documented arrangement with Lily's medical team.

But money couldn't remove the fear.

On Monday morning, Lily's cardiologist called.

“Mrs. Collins, we've reviewed Lily's latest imaging.”

Sarah gripped the phone.

“Is something wrong?”

“The findings suggest we shouldn't postpone the procedure. We'd like to move it forward.”

Sarah's stomach tightened.

“How soon?”

“Friday, if the surgical team and you are ready.”

Sarah looked toward Lily, who was coloring at the kitchen table.

Four days.

Only four days before her little girl would be taken into an operating room.

“Is she going to be okay?” Sarah whispered.

The doctor answered gently.

“We have an experienced team and a carefully developed plan. But this is significant surgery, and we'll go over the risks and expected recovery with you.”

Sarah closed her eyes.

“Thank you.”

When she ended the call, Lily looked up.

“Mommy, why are you crying?”

Sarah wiped her cheeks.

“Because the doctors are going to help your heart sooner than we thought.”

Lily considered this.

“Will it hurt?”

Sarah sat beside her.

“You'll be asleep during the operation. When you wake up, the nurses will help you with any pain.”

Lily nodded.

“Can Bunny come?”

Sarah smiled through her tears.

“We'll ask the hospital where Bunny can wait.”

That evening, Evelyn insisted on speaking with Lily.

The little girl climbed carefully onto the chair beside her bed.

“Grandma Evelyn, I'm having my operation on Friday.”

“I heard, darling.”

“Are you scared?”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“A little.”

“Me too.”

Evelyn reached for her hand.

“Do you know what I do when I'm frightened?”

Lily shook her head.

“I think about all the people who love me.”

Lily began counting on her fingers.

“Mommy. Mrs. Alvarez. You. Grandma Rebecca. Mr. Luca.”

Evelyn smiled.

“That's a wonderful list.”

Lily hesitated.

“And Daddy, even though he's in heaven.”

Sarah turned away to hide her tears.

Evelyn's eyes filled.

“Especially Daddy.”

Lily leaned closer.

“Do you think he'll be with me?”

Evelyn kissed her forehead.

“I think the love he gave you will always be part of you.”

On Friday morning, Sarah arrived at the hospital before sunrise.

Rebecca walked beside her.

Luca carried Lily's overnight bag.

Evelyn remained home under medical advice, but she sent a handwritten letter.

Lily insisted Sarah read it before the nurses took her upstairs.

“My precious Lily, you are braver than you know, and you are loved more than words can explain.”

Sarah's voice trembled.

“When you feel frightened, remember that every person waiting for you is cheering for your recovery.”

Lily smiled.

“Grandma Evelyn writes pretty letters.”

“She does, baby.”

A nurse approached.

“Lily, are you ready to meet your team?”

Lily looked at Sarah.

“Will you be here when I wake up?”

Sarah kissed her forehead.

“I'll be waiting.”

Lily held out her stuffed rabbit.

“Can you keep Bunny safe?”

Sarah took it.

“With my life.”

Then Lily reached toward Luca.

“Mr. Luca?”

He knelt.

“Yes, princess?”

“Can you promise Mommy won't be alone?”

Luca looked at Sarah.

“I promise she'll have people with her.”

Lily nodded, satisfied.

Then she allowed the nurse to guide her toward the surgical area.

Sarah watched until the doors closed.

Only then did her strength collapse.

She sank into a chair and began sobbing.

Rebecca wrapped her arms around her.

Luca sat on her other side.

Nobody told her not to cry.

Nobody promised an outcome they couldn't guarantee.

They simply stayed.

Hours passed.

Sarah drank coffee she couldn't taste.

She checked the clock repeatedly.

She reread Evelyn's letter.

At one point, Luca stepped into the hallway to answer a call from Detective Brooks.

Investigators had located additional financial records.

Richard Bellini had been arrested on charges connected to the alleged fraud and obstruction.

The investigation into Antonio's and Michael's deaths remained active.

Luca listened quietly.

“Thank you, Detective.”

When he returned, Sarah looked up.

“Everything okay?”

He nodded.

“There's progress in the case.”

Sarah stared at the operating room doors.

“Right now, I only care about Lily.”

“So do I.”

Late that afternoon, the surgeon entered the waiting room.

Sarah stood so quickly that her chair tipped backward.

“Doctor?”

The surgeon approached.

“The operation is complete.”

Sarah held her breath.

“The repair went as planned, and Lily is being transferred to intensive care for close monitoring.”

Sarah covered her mouth.

“She's alive?”

“Yes. She's stable at this point, though the next several days are important.”

Rebecca began crying.

Luca closed his eyes.

Sarah whispered, “Thank God.”

When Lily finally opened her eyes later, Sarah was beside her.

Her daughter looked sleepy and uncomfortable.

But she recognized her mother.

“Mommy?”

Sarah leaned closer.

“I'm here, baby.”

Lily blinked.

“Did they fix it?”

“The doctors repaired what they planned to repair. They're watching you very carefully now.”

Lily gave the smallest smile.

“Good.”

Then she whispered:

“CAN YOU TELL GRANDMA EVELYN MY HEART IS STILL BEATING?”
