Chapter 14 - Retribution and Justice

|

Three days later, the grand dining room was prepared once again.

There were no forty fake friends in silk gowns and designer tuxedos.

There were no whispers behind champagne flutes or sneering glances at the hired help.

The long mahogany table was set for five.

Teresa sat at the head of the table, wearing a beautiful navy blue dress that matched the sapphire pendant around her neck.

On her left sat Dante, dressed in a sharp navy blazer, his posture relaxed and proud.

Beside him sat little Sophie, coloring a picture of a sailboat on a paper placemat.

On Teresa’s right sat Luca, looking every bit the proud, honorable patriarch his father had always hoped he would be.

And beside Luca, dressed in a simple, elegant emerald-green dress that Teresa had personally insisted on buying for me, sat me.

In the center of the table was a massive bowl of Teresa’s homemade rigatoni, steam rising toward the crystal chandelier.

Marco poured sparkling apple cider into Sophie’s glass and rich Chianti into the adults’ goblets.

Luca picked up his glass and stood up, looking around the table at the faces he loved.

“A week ago, I thought strength meant building walls high enough that nothing could ever hurt us,” Luca said, his voice deep and steady.

“I thought power was about alliances, contracts, and fear.”

He looked down at his mother, his eyes filling with deep reverence.

“I forgot that true strength begins with a mother who stays up until midnight writing notes for her sons.”

He turned his gaze toward Dante.

“It lives in a brother who takes the blame to preserve the peace.”

He looked at Sophie, smiling tenderly at his daughter.

“It lives in a little girl who knows that love is found in crumpled scraps of paper.”

Finally, Luca turned his dark, soulful eyes directly to me.

My breath caught in my throat under the warmth of his gaze.

“And it lives in a woman who has the courage to speak the truth when everyone else chooses to stay silent.”

Luca raised his glass high into the air.

“To family.”

“To truth.”

“And to second chances.”

“To family!” Dante and Sophie echoed together, clinking their glasses.

Teresa raised her glass with her right hand.

Her fingers did not tremble.

Not even a single drop of wine spilled against the rim.

She caught my eye across the table and gave me a slow, triumphant wink that made me burst into happy tears.

After dinner, while Dante took Sophie out into the garden to show her how to carve a wooden whistle, Luca asked me to join him on the balcony.

The cool Chicago breeze brushed against my face as we stood side by side, looking out over the illuminated city skyline.

“You look beautiful tonight, Hannah,” Luca said softly, leaning his hip against the stone balustrade.

“Thank you, Luca,” I whispered, looking down at my hands.

“I still feel like I’m dreaming.”

“A week ago, I was terrified I wouldn't have enough money to buy groceries.”

Luca reached out and took my hand, lacing his long, strong fingers through mine.

“You will never have to be afraid of tomorrow again, Hannah.”

“I promise you that on my life.”

I looked up into his dark eyes, seeing no trace of the ruthless mob boss the city feared.

I saw only a man who loved deeply, protected fiercely, and was ready to heal.

“Why did you look at me like that at dinner?” I asked, my heart hammering against my ribs.

Luca took a half step closer, his thumb gently tracing the line of my jawline.

“Because when I saw you standing in front of my mother, defending her with nothing but your bare hands and your pure heart, I realized something.”

“What?”

“I realized that I didn’t just need you in this house for my mother.”

Luca leaned down, his warm breath brushing softly against my lips.

“I need you in my life, Hannah.”

“For me.”

He didn't rush me; he waited, giving me every chance to pull away.

Instead, I leaned up on my tiptoes and pressed my lips gently against his.

The kiss was warm, sweet, and filled with the promise of a dawn we had both fought so hard to reach.
