Chapter 9 - The Engagement Ring That Hid a Second Betrayal|

Michael Moretti surrendered two days later.

He arrived at a police station with his attorney.

He wore a dark suit and looked exhausted.

The charming smile I remembered from the mansion was gone.

For the first time, he looked afraid.

Luca did not attend the initial interview.

His attorney advised him to stay away while investigators collected Michael's statement.

Instead, he remained at the mansion with Teresa and Sofia.

Isabella was still under medical observation and child-protection supervision, but arrangements for her reunification with Sofia were moving forward.

Every few hours, someone called with an update.

And every time the phone rang, Teresa reached for Luca's hand.

I spent most of those days helping the household remain calm.

Meals still had to be prepared.

Rooms still needed cleaning.

But nothing felt ordinary.

The engagement decorations had been removed.

Vanessa's belongings were being inventoried.

And Luca had instructed Marco to preserve every document, phone, and computer connected to her activities in the mansion.

Then investigators found something unexpected.

A draft marriage agreement.

It was stored on Vanessa's laptop.

The agreement contained provisions allowing her to exercise certain financial authorities after marrying Luca.

But attached to it was another document.

A proposed guardianship arrangement involving Emma Reed.

Luca stared at the copies.

“Why would Vanessa have anything to do with guardianship of a child she claimed she didn't know?”

His attorney examined the paperwork.

“Because someone was trying to create a legal route to control the child's financial interests.”

Luca's expression hardened.

“Through marriage?”

“Potentially. The documents suggest a plan to combine access to family assets with authority over a child represented under a false identity.”

Luca looked toward Sofia.

His sister sat beside Teresa, holding a photograph of Isabella.

“Michael wanted the money,” she whispered.

Then she looked toward Vanessa's documents.

“And Vanessa wanted to become part of the family.”

Luca lowered his eyes.

The truth hurt.

For almost two years, he'd believed Vanessa loved him.

He'd introduced her to his mother.

Trusted her with household decisions.

Given her authority over staff schedules and family events.

And now he was learning that she'd been helping his brother manipulate the family from inside the mansion.

“Did she ever love me?” he whispered.

Nobody answered.

Because nobody knew.

That evening, Luca called off the engagement permanently.

He removed Vanessa's ring from the velvet box he'd kept in his study.

Then placed it inside an evidence envelope because investigators wanted to examine the records connected to its purchase and any disputed transfers.

For a long time, he stared at the empty box.

I was standing near the doorway.

“Mr. Moretti?”

He looked up.

“Yes, Hannah?”

“Would you like me to leave you alone?”

He considered it.

Then shook his head.

“Stay a moment.”

I stepped inside.

He looked toward the family photographs.

“Do you know what I wanted when I asked Vanessa to marry me?”

I hesitated.

“No, sir.”

“A family that felt peaceful.”

His voice softened.

“My father died. Michael and I became distant. Sofia moved away. Mom started having health problems.”

He swallowed.

“I thought Vanessa could help bring us together.”

I looked down.

“Instead, she kept us apart.”

He nodded.

Then gave a humorless laugh.

“I was so busy running businesses that I didn't notice what was happening in my own house.”

I thought of Teresa sitting beside her phone.

Crying.

Apologizing for wanting to hear her daughter's voice.

“Mr. Moretti, your mother tried to tell you.”

“I know.”

“And Sofia tried to call.”

“I know.”

I hesitated.

Then spoke honestly.

“Vanessa made sure none of you could speak directly.”

Luca stared at me.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then he nodded.

“That's what I should have noticed.”

He looked toward me.

“You helped Mom when you knew Vanessa could fire you.”

I swallowed.

“She needed someone.”

“And you stayed.”

“Yes.”

His expression softened.

“Thank you.”

I looked down.

“I'm glad I did.”

For several seconds, the room was quiet.

Then his phone rang.

Detective Ramirez.

He answered.

Listened.

His face changed.

“What?”

A pause.

Then he stood.

“Send it to my attorney.”

He ended the call.

I looked up.

“What happened?”

Luca's expression was grim.

“Michael confessed to helping falsify Isabella's records.”

My stomach tightened.

“And Vanessa?”

He looked toward the empty ring box.

“Michael says she suggested the plan.”

I stopped breathing.

May you like

Then Luca added something worse.

“He says Vanessa wanted Isabella moved overseas after the wedding.”
