Chapter 15 - Where Wildflowers Grow

|
After dinner, the children ran outside into the warm twilight to catch fireflies in the sprawling rose garden.
Their joyful laughter drifted through the open French doors, accompanied by the gentle chirping of crickets.
Silas and I walked hand in hand down the stone path, surrounded by hundreds of fully bloomed heritage roses and wild daisies.
Elena’s garden had flourished beyond all recognition, thick with sweet blossoms, winding ivy, and stone benches.
In the center of the garden stood a beautiful marble fountain carved with delicate stone butterflies.
We stopped beside the water, watching Sophie and Toby chase glowing bugs with empty glass jars near the gazebo.
“Silas,” I said, looking at the peaceful silhouette of the estate against the twilight sky.
“One year ago tonight, I was terrified that I wouldn't have enough money to buy Toby shoes for school.”
“I was terrified of losing a maid’s job that paid minimum wage.”
Silas turned to face me, taking both of my hands into his warm, steady palms.
“You never have to be afraid of the dark again, Hannah,” he whispered, his voice thick with raw emotion.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.
My breath hitched in my throat as he slowly sank onto one knee on the mossy stone path.
He opened the box to reveal a stunning ring: a brilliant oval-cut diamond nestled between two delicate silver butterflies, each wing carved from Florence silver.
“Hannah Brooks, you came into a house of ghosts and brought it back to life,” Silas said, his eyes shining with unshed tears.
“You gave my daughter a mother’s love when she was starving for it.”
“You showed me that a man is not measured by the fear he creates, but by the peace he protects.”
“Will you marry me, and let me spend the rest of my days loving you, Toby, and Sophie as one family?”
From behind the rose bushes, the rustling of leaves gave away the two children peeking through the branches.
“Say yes, Mom!” Toby shouted from the bushes, his face beaming with excitement.
“Say yes, Miss Hannah, please!” Sophie chimed in, jumping up and down on the grass.
Tears spilled freely down my cheeks as I looked down at the man who had redeemed his soul to build a sanctuary for us all.
“Yes, Silas,” I laughed through my tears.
“A thousand times, yes.”
Silas slid the ring onto my finger, rose to his feet, and swept me into his arms, kissing me deeply under the starlit sky.
Sophie and Toby charged out from behind the bushes, throwing their arms around our waists and joining the embrace.
As I held Silas, Toby, and Sophie tight against my heart, I looked down at the stone fountain where Elena’s memory rested.

A gentle summer breeze swept through the garden, rustling the rose petals and scattering the sweet scent of wildflowers across the terrace.
The ghosts were finally gone, the debt was paid in full, and in their place, a real family had finally taken root.
