Chapter 12 - THE RING AND THE COVENANT

|
My fingers trembled slightly as I lifted the lid of the small black velvet box.
Resting inside on a bed of white silk was an exquisite vintage ring featuring an emerald-cut diamond surrounded by two deep blue sapphires.
The platinum band was engraved with delicate, hand-carved ivy leaves that matched the trim on Noah’s wooden horse.
“Dominic...” I whispered, my hand flying to my mouth as tears blurred the sparkling stones.
“This belonged to my mother, Claire,” Dominic said softly, his voice dropping into a low, emotional register.
“She died when I was seven years old.”
“Before she passed away, she gave this ring to Rosa and told her to keep it hidden until I found a woman who loved me for my soul, not my name.”
Rosa smiled from the stove, nodding with tearful pride as she stirred the marinara sauce.
Dominic took the ring from the velvet box, his large, warm hand taking my left hand into his.
He lowered himself onto one knee right there on the kitchen tile, in front of Rosa, in front of the simmering sauce, in front of our son.
Noah stopped playing with his dough, his wide eyes watching his father with breathless fascination.
“Claire,” Dominic said, looking up into my face with complete, unvarnished vulnerability.
“Five years ago, I failed you.”
“I let my father’s lies and my own blindness steal the most precious years of our lives.”
“You survived poverty, fear, and cruelty, and you raised our son to be brave, kind, and full of light.”
His thumbs gently stroked the back of my hand, his touch sending waves of warmth straight to my heart.
“You gave this house a soul, Claire.”
“You gave me a reason to live in the daylight.”
“Will you do me the greatest honor of my life, and become my wife?”
The tears spilled freely down my cheeks, hot and filled with pure, radiant joy.
There was no doubt in my soul.
There was no shadow left between us.
“Yes, Dominic,” I whispered, dropping to my knees on the floor beside him so our eyes were level.
“A thousand times, yes.”
Dominic let out a long, ragged breath of pure triumph, his face breaking into a smile that outshone the morning sun.
He slid the vintage diamond ring onto my finger.
It fit with absolute, divine perfection, gleaming against my skin like a sacred covenant forged in fire.
Dominic pulled me into his arms, his mouth capturing mine in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of home, safety, and forever.
Noah squealed with delight, jumping down from his barstool and running over to throw his arms around both of our necks.
“We’re a family!” Noah cheered, his flour-covered cheeks pressing against Dominic’s neck.
Dominic laughed, scooping Noah up with one arm while keeping his other arm locked securely around my waist.
“We are a family, buddy,” Dominic declared, kissing Noah’s curls.
“Forever and ever.”
Rosa clapped her hands with joy, wiping her eyes with the corner of her apron, whispering prayers of thanksgiving in Italian.
The kitchen was filled with the light of redemption.
The maid’s apron was gone forever.

The lies had been burned to ash.
And our new life was finally ready to begin.
