Chapter 14 - Feathers and Iron

|

Three months passed.

Spring arrived in Chicago, washing away the bitter winter ice and replacing it with blooming magnolias and warm lake breezes.

In the heart of the historic River North arts district, a newly renovated storefront displayed a clean, elegant sign in gold lettering: The Silver Sparrow Studio.

Inside the sunlit space, dozens of original landscape paintings and hand-crafted metal sculptures lined the exposed brick walls.

I stood near an easel in the center of the hardwood floor, a paintbrush tucked behind my ear and faint smudges of cerulean blue oil paint across my white linen apron.

After the trials concluded and Clara was settled into her quiet cottage near the Wisconsin border, Dante had offered me a penthouse suite, a luxury car, and an unlimited trust fund.

I had declined every single offer.

Instead, with the modest whistleblower reward granted to my mother by the Department of Justice, I had rented this small studio and loft apartment entirely on my own.

I needed to know that I could stand on my own two feet.

I needed to prove to myself that Nora Bennett was not an ornament to be kept in a gilded cage.

A soft chime above the glass front door signaled an arrival.

I wiped my hands on a cloth and turned around.

Dante Valenti stood in the entryway, filling the doorway with his commanding, breathtaking presence.

He wore a tailored black overcoat over an open-collared dress shirt, his dark hair catching the warm afternoon sunlight.

In his right hand, he held a single, elegant white rose.

"The gallery is closed for private viewing, Mr. Valenti," I teased, leaning against the edge of a wooden workbench with a playful smile.

Dante walked slowly across the hardwood floor, his dark eyes never leaving my face.

"I spoke with the owner," Dante replied smoothly, stopping two feet away and extending the white rose toward me.

"She's known to make exceptions for persistent admirers."

I took the rose, bringing the fragrant petals to my nose.

"You're late," I murmured softly.

"Traffic on the Kennedy Expressway," Dante said, his voice dropping into that familiar, intoxicating rumble.

"And Matteo insisted on showing me three new security upgrades for your studio windows."

"I told you, Dante, I don't need round-the-clock surveillance."

"I am perfectly safe."

"The surveillance isn't because I think you are in danger, Nora," Dante answered, reaching out to gently brush his thumb across the faint smudge of blue paint on my cheek.

"It's because I cannot breathe properly if I don't know you are well."

My heart fluttered against my ribs, just as it had every single time he touched me over the last ninety days.

He had visited me three times a week.

He had brought me dinner, listened to my dreams, and watched me paint for hours without ever demanding a single thing in return.

He had given me space to heal, space to breathe, and complete control over my own life.

He had shown me that true devotion does not possess; it protects.

"How is Clara doing?" Dante asked softly, letting his hand drop back to his side.

"She planted her hydrangeas yesterday," I smiled, warmth flooding my chest.

"She says the lake air smells like freedom."

"And what does River North smell like to you?"

"It smells like a new beginning," I whispered, stepping closer until only inches separated our bodies.

"A beginning I want to share with you, Dante."

Dante looked down at me, his dark eyes burning with fierce, restrained longing.

"Are you sure, Nora?"

"You fought so hard for your independence."

"I will never be the man who clips your wings."

"I don't want wings if they only carry me away from you," I answered with absolute conviction.

Dante smiled, that rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his intimidating face into something dazzlingly beautiful.

"Then close the gallery early tonight, Nora."

"There is somewhere I need to take you."
