Chapter 8 - Midnight at Pier 54

Fog rolled off the black waters of Elliott Bay, thick as cotton, swallowing Pier 54 in an eerie, aquatic shroud.

The Severodvinsk loomed like a rusted iron beast against the concrete dock. Its massive cargo cranes hung suspended in the mist like skeletal fingers. Steam hissed from auxiliary exhaust vents, blending with the smell of diesel, rotting fish, and salt water.

Luca Castellano stood in the shadow of a mountain of corrugated shipping containers, dressed in black tactical gear beneath a heavy dark coat. Beside him, twelve of his best men held suppressed carbines at the low ready.

I wasn't supposed to be there.

Luca had ordered me into the vault. But Dante—loyal, battered Dante—had received a frantic radio transmission forty minutes ago that changed everything.

Sitting in the passenger seat of an unmarked surveillance van parked three blocks north, I watched the thermal camera feed with my heart in my throat.

“Boss, thermal imaging shows three heat signatures inside the wheelhouse,” Dante’s voice crackled through the secure earpiece. “Petrov’s men are setting up heavy machine-gun nests along the gangway. It’s an ambush.”

Luca’s calm voice cut through the static: “Hold positions until Jake makes contact. We take him alive if possible. Petrov is secondary.”

Through the grain of the night-vision feed, I saw a black Mercedes sedan glide slowly onto the pier, its headlights slicing through the mist.

The driver’s door opened. Jake stepped out.

His right arm was heavily bound in a medical sling from my bullet, but his left hand held a silver briefcase chained to his wrist. He walked toward the gangplank of the Russian freighter with cocky, arrogant swagger.

Three men in heavy Russian winter parkas stepped off the gangway to meet him. In the center was Sergei Petrov—a burly, bearded warlord with gold teeth and a scar across his throat.

“You are late, Martinez,” Petrov’s thick accent filtered through the directional audio microphones.

“Traffic was hell,” Jake smirked, raising the briefcase. “I have the initial algorithm core. But the biometric key sequence requires confirmation.”

Petrov frowned. “Where is the child? We agreed the child’s sample would be delivered directly.”

“The child is currently locked inside Luca Castellano’s private bunker,” Jake said smoothly. “Which is why I brought something better. A remote terminal uplink that hacks Castellano’s private network directly from the inside.”

In the surveillance van, my blood ran cold.

Inside?

Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the dashboard. A restricted number.

I answered, pressing it to my ear. “Hello?”

“Ava.”

The voice was cold, mechanical.

It was Martha.

“Martha? What’s going on? Where is Emma?!”

“Your daughter is currently asleep in the safe room, Ava,” Martha said, her polite British accent devoid of any warmth. “And she will remain safe, provided Mr. Castellano does not interfere with the cargo transfer at Pier 54.”

My vision blurred with pure terror. Martha. The head of household. The woman who had served pancakes to my daughter.

“You…” I choked out. “You’re working for them?”

“Mr. Martinez paid off my son’s gambling debts two years ago,” Martha replied calmly. “I owe him a life debt. Inform Mr. Castellano that if he fires a single shot on that pier, I trigger the fire suppression halon gas in safe room B. Your daughter and Mrs. Chen have ninety seconds of oxygen.”

“NO! Martha, please!” I screamed.

The line went dead.

I didn't think. I didn't strategize. The instinct of a mother stripped of her child overtook every rational thought in my brain.

I ripped off the earpiece, threw open the door of the surveillance van, and sprinted into the freezing fog of Pier 54.

“Luca!” I screamed, my voice cutting through the mist as I ran onto the open dock. “LUCA, DON'T SHOOT! IT’S A TRAP!”

Every head on the pier snapped in my direction.

Jake spun around, his eyes widening in shock. “Ava?!”

From the shadows of the shipping containers, Luca broke cover instantly, his rifle raised. “Ava! Get down!”

“Martha has Emma!” I screamed, sliding across the wet timber of the pier. “She has the safe room! If you shoot, she kills Emma!”

A vicious, triumphant laugh tore from Jake’s throat. “Well, well! Look who decided to join the party!”

Petrov’s men reacted with brutal speed, raising their AK-47s toward Luca’s position.

“Kill them all!” Petrov roared in Russian.

Gunfire detonated across Pier 54.

Muzzle flashes strobed through the fog like miniature suns. Bullets chewed through concrete and wooden pilings, sending splinters and lead whining through the air.

Luca moved like lightning. He didn't fire at the Russians; he lunged across the open tarmac directly toward me.

A bullet clipped his thigh. Another tore through his tactical vest.

Luca didn't stop. He tackled me behind a heavy iron mooring bollard just as a burst of automatic fire ripped through the space where I had been standing.

“I told you to stay in the car!” Luca roared in my face, his dark eyes blazing with terrifying fury, blood dripping from a graze on his cheek.

“Martha is the leak!” I wept, clutching his tactical vest. “She has Emma locked in the vault with halon gas! Luca, she’s going to suffocate my baby!”

Luca froze.

The gunfire around us intensified as Dante’s men returned fire, pinning Petrov’s shooters against the ship’s hull.

Across the pier, Jake was scrambling toward the gangway of the Severodvinsk, clutching his briefcase.

Luca pulled his satellite comms unit from his collar.

“Team Three,” Luca commanded, his voice cold as ice. “Execute Protocol Omega on the estate. Breaching charges on the interior vault. Neutralize Martha immediately. Do not engage in negotiation.”

“Copy, Boss. Charges set. Breaching in thirty seconds.”

Luca looked at me. His eyes softened for a fraction of a second. “Emma will be fine. Trust my men.”

Then he looked toward the ship. Jake was halfway up the metal stairs.

May you like

“Stay here,” Luca commanded.

He stood up, drew two black pistols from his belt, and stepped out from behind the bollard into the crossfire, advancing on the Russian ship like an unstoppable god of war.
