Chapter 7 - Blood on the Threshold

The front doors slammed shut, the heavy iron deadbolts sliding into place with a series of sharp, mechanical clangs.

The foyer fell into a stunned, breathless silence.

The house staff remained frozen against the wall, terrified to move, terrified to breathe. Luca stood in the center of the room, adjusting the cuffs of his shirt, his chest rising and falling in slow, measured rhythms. The violence rolling off him was almost palpable, an electric current that made the air feel heavy and charged.

“Clear the room,” he commanded without looking up.

Mrs. Gable didn't need to be told twice. She quickly ushered the trembling staff toward the service corridors, the kitchen doors swinging shut behind them, leaving only Luca, Matteo, and me in the vast expanse of the hall.

My legs finally gave out.

The adrenaline that had kept me standing through the confrontation drained away in an instant, leaving my muscles trembling and weak. I stumbled sideways, grasping for the edge of the carved balustrade to keep from hitting the marble floor.

Before I could fall, Luca was there.

His arm slid around my waist, pulling me securely against his chest. The familiar scent of cedarwood and cold rain washed over me, grounding me against the dizzying spin of the room.

“I have you,” he whispered against my hair. His voice was no longer the voice of a ruthless mob boss delivering death sentences. It was soft, intense, and trembling with an emotion he couldn't quite conceal. “You're safe, Clara. I have you.”

I buried my face against the lapel of his suit jacket, my hands clutching the fabric of his shirt. Tears of relief and residual terror soaked through the fine wool, but for the first time in my life, I didn't care about propriety. I didn't care about the boundaries between master and servant.

In his arms, behind the iron doors of this fortress, I was alive.

“Matteo,” Luca said, his voice returning to business over the top of my head, though he didn't loosen his hold on me by a fraction of an inch.

“I’m already on it,” Matteo replied, his phone already pressed to his ear. “Vance is retreating toward his south-side compound, but he won't take this lying down. He was humiliated in front of his own capos. He’ll mobilize by nightfall.”

“Let him,” Luca said coldly. “Call the captains. Double the perimeter guard at the gates, shut down the external supply lines, and move the heavy armaments from the warehouse to the grounds. We lock this estate down.”

“And the girl?” Matteo asked, his eyes darting toward me with a mixture of respect and deep concern.

Luca looked down at me, his fingers gently tracing the curve of my jaw, tilting my face up so that our eyes met.

“The girl stays with me,” Luca said simply.

Matteo nodded once, understanding the unspoken finality in his boss’s voice, and hurried down the east hallway to execute the orders.

Luca lifted me into his arms once more, carrying me up the grand staircase. I didn't protest this time. I wrapped my arms around his neck, resting my head against the crook of his shoulder, listening to the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat beneath his ribs.

He didn't take me to the guest suite.

He carried me straight into his master bedroom—a massive, vaulted room dominated by a king-sized four-poster bed, dark wood furniture, and a private stone terrace that overlooked the sprawling estate. He laid me down gently on the charcoal silk sheets, pulling off my shoes with careful, deliberate hands.

He sat on the edge of the mattress, looking down at me with an expression that made my breath hitch.

“You knew,” I whispered, looking up at him through wet lashes. “You knew she had stolen the brooch before Vance even arrived.”

“I’ve had eyes on Isabella every second since I sent her away on Friday,” Luca said, his thumb gently wiping away a stray tear from the corner of my eye. “My men saw her take the piece from her jewel box. They saw her slip into the basement. I let it play out because I needed Vance to commit the treason himself. If I had simply broken the engagement, the council would have sided with him. But by proving a false blood accusation, I stripped him of all legal standing.”

A cold shiver ran through me. “You used yourself as bait.”

“I used her arrogance against her,” Luca corrected softly. “And I made sure she could never touch you again.”

I reached up, my trembling fingers hesitating before resting against his cheek, feeling the rough shadow of his beard beneath my palm. “Why, Luca? Why risk everything—your alliance, your business, your peace—for someone like me? I’m just a maid. I have nothing to offer you.”

Luca leaned into my touch, closing his eyes for a brief second, as if my hand against his skin was the only thing keeping him tethered to the earth.

When he opened his eyes, the darkness in them had been replaced by a fierce, consuming fire.

“In this world, Clara,” he said, his voice a low, gravelly confession, “everyone wants something from me. My lieutenants want power. Vance wanted my distribution routes. Isabella wanted my name, my money, and the fear I command. No one has ever looked at me the way you did on that floor.”

He leaned down, his forehead resting gently against mine, his breath warm against my lips.

“You looked at me like a man,” he whispered. “Not a boss. Not a monster. Just a man. And when you stood up to Isabella—when you refused to lie, even when you were terrified—I saw something I haven't seen in this city in twenty years.”

“What?” I breathed, my heart fluttering wildly against my ribs.

“Someone worth fighting for,” Luca murmured.

He didn't wait for my answer.

His lips came down on mine, fierce, hungry, and possessive, sweeping away every thought, every fear, and every lingering shred of doubt. It wasn't a gentle kiss; it was the kiss of a man who had claimed what was his, pouring all the dark passion and unyielding protection of his soul into the touch.

I gasped against his mouth, my hands tangling into the thick, dark hair at the nape of his neck, pulling him closer. The world outside these walls—the gathering storm, the Vance family, the threat of war—faded into complete insignificance.

There was only the heat of his skin, the taste of bourbon and rain on his lips, and the terrifying, exhilarating realization that I had fallen completely, irrevocably in love with the most dangerous man in Chicago.
