Chapter 6 - The Winter Gala

The Grand Ballroom of the Casino de Monte-Carlo was a spectacle of gilded mirrors, crystal chandeliers, and decadent corruption.

Here, European royalty rubbed shoulders with arms dealers, oil barons, and the silent rulers of the continent's criminal underworld. A string quartet played a seamless waltz on the mezzanine, masking the whispers of impending war.

When the massive oak doors swung open, the room did not fall silent immediately. But as Elias Moretti stepped through the archway, the low murmur of conversation began to die away like ripples on water.

Beside him, holding his arm with effortless grace, walked Seraphina.

Her dark skin gleamed beneath the diamond choker. Her posture was straight, her head held high. And as she turned slightly to greet a passing French senator, the chandelier light hit her exposed shoulder.

Gasps rippled through the older members of the crowd.

An elderly Italian don dropped his champagne flute, the crystal shattering across the parquet floor. Several men instinctively reached inside their tuxedo jackets, their eyes darting toward the corners of the room.

The Valenti scar was a legend. Every boss on the Riviera knew the story of the four-year-old heiress branded by her father’s signet ring in the fire.

At the center of the ballroom, surrounded by four hulking bodyguards, stood Mateo Moretti.

Mateo was sixty, with silver hair, a hawk-like nose, and the cruel, wet eyes of a hyena. When he saw Seraphina, his glass trembled so violently the red wine sloshed over his knuckles.

“Elias,” Mateo said loudly, forcing a smile that did not reach his cold eyes as the two factions converged near the grand fountain. “You honor us with your presence. Though I see you’ve brought your household help to an evening reserved for bloodlines.”

The insult was designed to provoke. Elias didn't flinch.

“I brought the rightful owner of the table, Uncle,” Elias said smoothly, his voice carrying clearly across the silent room. “Allow me to introduce Giuliana Valenti. Sole surviving heir to the Valenti estate, legitimate holder of the Nice and Genoa port concessions.”

Mateo laughed, a harsh, grating bark. “A bedtime story! Giuliana Valenti burned to ash in 2004! This is an imposter pulled from a gutter in Kingston, paraded in jewelry stolen from a family vault!”

“The scar doesn't lie, Mateo,” Elias answered, stepping half an inch forward. “And neither do the dental records Clara Bennett deposited with the Swiss courts before her death, which my attorneys verified three hours ago.”

Mateo’s smile evaporated. A vein bulged on his temple. “Even if she is who you claim, she has no standing. The Valenti line was struck from the ledger. She is an outsider.”

“According to Section Four of the 1984 Treaty,” Seraphina’s voice cut through the tension, clear, melodic, and chillingly steady, “no family line can be struck without a unanimous vote of all five syndicates. My father did not vote. Because your brother had him shot in his sleep before setting the fire.”

A collective intake of breath swept through the ballroom.

Mateo’s face turned purple with rage. “You insolent little—”

He raised a hand, stepping toward her.

In a blur of lethal motion, Elias was in front of him. Before Mateo’s guards could draw, Elias’s hand shot out like an iron vise, wrapping around Mateo’s throat and slamming the older man back against a marble pillar with a sickening crunch.

The ballroom erupted into chaos. Women screamed, men ducked behind tables, and twenty guns cleared leather simultaneously.

“Touch her,” Elias whispered, his face inches from Mateo’s bulging eyes, “and I will peel your skin from your bones in front of everyone you love. Do you understand me?”

Mateo gagged, clawing at Elias’s wrist. “You… you traitor…”

Elias let him drop like a sack of stones. Straightening his cuffs, Elias turned to the stunned assembly, his voice dropping over the room like an iron curtain.

“The council meets at dawn. Have your ledgers ready.”
