Chapter 7 - The Threat at the Threshold

Before heading toward the docks, Desmond insisted on making a detour to the hospital safe floor where Lena was under guard.
He knew that when desperate men realized their plans were falling apart, they struck at whatever was softest and most defenseless.
Maya’s maternal instincts screamed with impending danger as their SUV raced through the quiet pre-dawn streets toward Saint Jude’s.
When they arrived at the hospital’s private rear entrance, Maya noticed immediately that the standard security patrol vehicle was missing from the service bay.
Desmond drew a customized matte-black semi-automatic from his shoulder holster, motioning for Maya to stay low behind his broad back.
They moved quickly through the stairwell, bypassing the elevators, the silence of the hospital corridors suddenly suffocating and wrong.
On the ninth floor, Maya gasped in horror as she saw one of Desmond’s loyal bodyguards slumped against the nurses' station, unconscious and bleeding from a head wound.
Desmond didn't shout; he sprinted forward with lethal grace, kicking open the door to Lena’s private suite with his weapon raised.
Inside, two men dressed in black tactical fatigues were attempting to disconnect Lena’s oxygen monitoring harness, while Dr. Thorne lay tied and gagged in the corner.
The lead mercenary turned with a silenced submachine gun, but Desmond was already firing before the weapon could clear the bedframe.
Two suppressed gunshots echoed with dull, heavy thuds against the reinforced medical walls, and the first assailant dropped instantly to the floor.
The second mercenary grabbed Dr. Thorne as a human shield, raising a combat knife toward the doctor’s throat.
Maya reacted without a second of hesitation or fear for her own safety.
She seized a heavy steel oxygen tank from the emergency cart beside the door and swung it with all her strength against the mercenary’s exposed knee.
The bone snapped with a sickening crunch, the man screamed and dropped his blade, and Desmond neutralized him instantly with a devastating strike to the temple.
Maya dropped the tank, threw herself across the bed, and wrapped her arms around Lena, who had awakened and was crying hysterically.
Maya buried her face in her daughter’s curls, whispering over and over that mommy was here, that mommy was never going to let anyone hurt her again.
Desmond swiftly untied Dr. Thorne, who coughed and pointed toward the window, warning that the assailants had come to silence the child to force Maya’s surrender.
Desmond pulled his satellite radio from his belt, barking an immediate order to mobilize his entire personal tactical reserve.
Within ten minutes, eight armored black sedans sealed off the hospital perimeter, carrying thirty elite, heavily armed men loyal exclusively to Carrick.
Desmond walked over to the bed, gently placing his large, warm hand over Lena’s trembling head.
The little girl looked up through her tears, reaching out her tiny hand to grasp Desmond’s thumb with surprising strength.
She sniffled, asking if the bad men were gone because the angel with the big coat had arrived to fight them away.
Desmond looked down at the child, his fierce eyes softening with an emotion that shocked everyone in the room, including himself.
He leaned down and promised Lena that the bad men were finished, and that nobody would ever enter this room without her permission again.
He turned to Dr. Thorne and his top tactical commander, ordering that the entire pediatric wing be converted into an impenetrable military fortress.
He declared that if anyone without high-level biometric authorization came within fifty feet of this door, they were to be put down without warning.
Maya stood up from the bed, kissed Lena’s forehead, and gently told her daughter that mommy had to go fix one last broken machine before her surgery.
Lena nodded bravely, holding a stuffed rabbit Desmond’s men had brought her, telling her mother that she would be strong if mommy promised to come back.
Maya looked at Desmond, her posture straight, her fear transformed into cold, diamond-hard resolve.
She said that Croft had crossed the final boundary by touching her daughter, and now she was going to burn his conspiracy down to the ash.
May you like
Desmond nodded in grim approval, handing her an encrypted communication headset and a reinforced Kevlar vest.
He said that the sun would rise over the harbor in two hours, and by the time it did, the city would know who truly ruled the coast.
