Chapter 8 - The School Pickup That Changed Everything|

By the time we reached Lily's school, two police cars were parked outside.

My hands trembled in my lap.

Luca drove himself.

He hadn't spoken during the entire journey.

His jaw was tight, and the tattoos across his hands looked darker against the steering wheel.

I kept thinking about Lily.

Her blue schoolbag.

The little yellow ribbon she'd tied around the handle.

The way she'd kissed my cheek that morning before leaving.

“Luca,” I whispered, “she's safe. The principal called before letting anyone take her.”

He nodded once.

But his grip tightened.

At the entrance, a security officer approached.

“Mr. Moretti?”

“Where's my daughter?”

“In the principal's office. She's safe.”

Luca moved past him.

I followed.

Inside, Lily sat on a small couch holding her backpack.

The moment she saw her father, she ran toward him.

“Daddy!”

He dropped to one knee and caught her.

“I'm here.”

She began crying.

“Vanessa said you sent her.”

Luca closed his eyes.

“I didn't.”

“She said we were going on a surprise trip.”

He held her tighter.

“You're not going anywhere with her.”

Lily looked up.

“Is she mad at me?”

“No, sweetheart. And even if she is, that's not your fault.”

The principal, Mrs. Bennett, approached.

She looked shaken.

“Mr. Moretti, I'm terribly sorry.”

Luca stood with Lily in his arms.

“Tell me exactly what happened.”

Mrs. Bennett explained that Vanessa had arrived shortly after lunch.

She'd worn sunglasses and a cream-colored coat.

She'd told the office staff that Luca had authorized an early pickup.

When asked for identification, she'd produced an old emergency-contact form.

Her name was listed.

Luca stared.

“I removed her authorization yesterday.”

Mrs. Bennett nodded.

“We received the update this morning. That's why the staff didn't release Lily.”

Relief washed over me.

Vanessa had become angry when the school refused.

She'd insisted she was Lily's stepmother.

Then she told the principal that Luca was having a mental health crisis and couldn't care for his daughter.

My stomach turned.

Luca's expression went completely still.

“She said what?”

Mrs. Bennett swallowed.

“She claimed the family was dealing with a private emergency.”

“And then?”

“She asked to speak with Lily alone.”

Luca's jaw tightened.

“We refused.”

“Good.”

Vanessa had left before police arrived.

But the school had preserved security footage and provided a statement.

Luca thanked the staff.

Then looked at his daughter.

“Lily, you're coming home with me.”

She nodded.

I reached for her backpack.

As we walked toward the car, she tugged my sleeve.

“Claire?”

“Yes?”

“Can you sit beside me?”

“Of course.”

I climbed into the back seat.

Lily leaned against my shoulder.

Her hands were trembling.

I held her gently.

“You're safe now.”

She whispered, “Vanessa said if I didn't go with her, Daddy would be hurt.”

My blood went cold.

I looked toward Luca.

He'd heard.

His eyes met mine in the rearview mirror.

The expression on his face frightened me.

But his voice remained calm.

“Lily, nobody gets to make you responsible for keeping me safe. That's my job.”

She nodded.

“And you did exactly the right thing by staying with your teachers.”

She began crying again.

I held her while Luca drove us home.

When we arrived, Marco was waiting with two officers.

Luca carried Lily inside.

He asked Mrs. Alvarez to prepare her favorite soup.

Then he sat with her in the family room until she fell asleep against his chest.

For nearly an hour, he didn't move.

I watched from the doorway.

At last, he looked up.

“Claire.”

I approached.

“Would you sit with her while I speak to Marco?”

I nodded.

He carefully transferred Lily to the sofa.

Then kissed her forehead.

I settled beside her.

As Luca walked out, I heard him tell Marco:

“I want a court order keeping Vanessa away from my daughter.”

Marco nodded.

“We're already speaking with the attorney.”

“And Richard?”

“His lawyers are claiming Vanessa acted independently.”

Luca stopped.

“Of course they are.”

Marco lowered his voice.

“But there's something else.”

I couldn't hear the rest.

Later that evening, Luca asked me to come to the study.

I found him standing beside the window.

He looked exhausted.

“Claire, thank you for coming to the school.”

“Of course.”

He turned.

“Vanessa wasn't trying to take Lily on a vacation.”

I stared.

“What was she doing?”

He handed me a printed message.

It had been recovered from Vanessa's phone records.

The message was from Richard Bellini.

Get the girl. Luca will exchange the evidence for her.

I felt sick.

Luca took the paper back.

“They wanted to use my daughter.”

I covered my mouth.

He looked toward Sarah's photograph.

“Five years ago, they threatened my wife.”

His voice trembled.

“And today they tried to use Lily.”

He lowered his head.

For the first time, I saw tears slide down his face without him trying to hide them.

“I brought Vanessa into my home,” he whispered.

I stepped closer.

“You didn't know.”

“I should have listened.”

I reached for his hand.

“You're listening now.”

He looked at me.

Then gently squeezed my fingers.

For one brief moment, the mansion felt completely still.

But the quiet ended when Marco knocked.

“Boss?”

Luca turned.

“What?”

“We found Vanessa.”

“Where?”

“At Richard Bellini's private airfield.”

Luca straightened.

Marco continued.

“They were preparing to leave the country.”

“And?”

Marco's expression hardened.

“Federal agents stopped the plane.”

Relief swept through me.

But then Marco added something unexpected.

“Vanessa agreed to speak.”

Luca stared.

“About what?”

May you like

Marco swallowed.

“Sarah's last day.”
