Chapter 12 - CONFESSIONS AND CAGES

|

The morning sun broke through the storm clouds, illuminating the aftermath of the failed insurrection.

All twelve of Marco Bellini’s mercenaries had been captured or neutralized by Moretti security forces.

The Chicago Commission convened once more in the courtyard, this time acting as an official tribunal.

Marco Bellini knelt on the wet gravel, his hands bound behind his back with heavy zip-ties.

Beside him stood Vanessa, still wearing her ruined red silk evening dress, her mascara smeared across her pale face.

She was sobbing uncontrollably, begging anyone who would listen for mercy.

“Daddy made me do it!” Vanessa wailed toward the stone terrace.

“Luca, please! I loved you! I really loved you!”

Luca walked down the stone steps, wearing a fresh dark shirt, his knuckles bruised from the night’s fighting.

He stopped three feet in front of the kneeling woman who was supposed to be his wife.

“You didn't love me, Vanessa,” Luca said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion.

“You loved the empire my mother built with her blood.”

“And you were willing to lock an innocent old man in a padded room to steal it.”

Antonio walked down the steps behind his son, resting his hand gently on Luca’s shoulder.

Antonio looked down at Marco Bellini, his old rival.

“For seventeen years, you smiled at my table, Marco,” Antonio said softly.

“You drank my wine while knowing you stole Caterina’s peace of mind forever.”

Marco looked up, spitting blood onto the gravel.

“I should have killed her back then,” Marco snarled, completely unrepentant.

“And I should have killed your bastard son while he was still a boy.”

Don Falcone stepped forward, representing the unanimous verdict of the five families.

“Marco Bellini, by order of the Commission, your family name is stripped of all rank, territory, and protection.”

Falcone looked over at Daniel.

“Deliver them both to the federal authorities.”

Vanessa gasped in horror.

“The feds? No! You can’t do that!”

Luca knelt down so his face was level with Vanessa’s.

“We have handed thirty years of your father’s financial fraud, tax evasion, and human trafficking files to the Department of Justice.”

“You and your father will spend the rest of your natural lives inside a federal penitentiary in Indiana.”

“No private suites.”

“No silk dresses.”

“No staff to command.”

Vanessa began to shriek hysterically as two federal agents, who had been waiting outside the gates, stepped forward and clamped steel handcuffs around her wrists.

“Luca! Don’t do this to me! Emma!” Vanessa screamed, spotting me standing near the terrace doors.

“Emma, tell him to stop! You’re just a maid! You don’t belong here!”

I looked Vanessa directly in the eyes.

I didn't yell.

I didn't taunt her.

I simply lifted my chin and held her gaze until the federal agents pushed her into the back of an unmarked black van.

Marco Bellini was thrown into the second vehicle, his empire completely dissolved in the span of twelve hours.

As the vans drove away down the long driveway, a profound, peaceful silence settled over the Moretti estate.

The nightmare that had haunted this family for seventeen years was finally over.
