Chapter 11 - THE PROMISE BY THE BLUFFS

|

The path winding through the estate’s private pine woods was carpeted in golden birch leaves and soft needles.

The crisp autumn breeze swept off Lake Michigan, carrying the fresh, clean scent of water, cedar, and distant rain.

Luca walked beside me, his large hand gently engulfing mine, his fingers entwined with an easy, natural warmth.

Leo ran ahead of us along the cleared gravel trail, kicking up piles of dry leaves, chasing a red squirrel up an ancient oak tree.

He was laughing—a bright, musical sound that chased every lingering shadow of fear from the fifty-acre property.

Luca watched his son run, his profile relaxed, his posture no longer that of a hunted mobster, but of a man who had reclaimed his soul.

“Dr. Rossi visited your father’s clinic in Oak Park this morning, Emma,” Luca said quietly, looking down at me.

My breath caught in my throat, my fingers tightening against his palm.

“How is he, Luca?”

“Dr. Rossi reviewed his scans and coordinated with the chief of neurology at Northwestern,” Luca smiled gently.

“Your father is being transferred to their private rehabilitation pavilion at noon today.”

“He will have daily hydrotherapy, private physical therapists, and a private room overlooking the gardens.”

Tears instantly blurred my vision, hot and sweet against my cold cheeks.

“Luca... that clinic costs thousands of dollars a week,” I whispered, overwhelmed by his boundless generosity.

“My family could never repay that.”

Luca stopped on the stone overlook above the crashing blue waves of the lake, turning to face me completely.

He reached out with his free hand, his warm, calloused fingers gently cupping my chin, lifting my face so our eyes met.

“You gave my son his life back, Emma,” Luca murmured, his voice dropping into a low, emotional rumble.

“You stood beside an old man and told fifty killers that loyalty mattered more than a paycheck.”

His gray eyes were luminous in the morning sunlight, holding a fierce, unshakeable devotion that made my heart hammer.

“There is no debt between our families, Emma.”

“Everything I have is yours.”

“Luca, I’m just a housekeeper from Bridgeport,” I whispered, my voice trembling with raw vulnerability.

“You were never just a housekeeper, Emma,” Luca countered softly, his thumb gently stroking my lower lip.

“You were the only person in this city who looked at my family and saw human beings instead of an empire.”

Leo came running back down the gravel trail, holding a shiny red maple leaf in his small hand.

“Look, Daddy! Look, Miss Emma! It’s shaped like a star!” Leo cheered, holding the leaf high.

Luca chuckled, bending down effortlessly to scoop his son up into his left arm.

Leo wrapped his arm around Luca’s neck, resting the red leaf against Luca’s collar, smiling down at me with boundless affection.

“Can Miss Emma eat dinner with us tonight, Daddy?” Leo asked, his hazel eyes wide with hopeful innocence.

“At the big table?”

Luca looked at me, a breathtaking, radiant smile breaking across his handsome face.

“Miss Emma is never eating dinner anywhere else, Leo,” Luca answered softly, his eyes locking onto mine with an eternal promise.

“She sits at the head of our table from now on.”

I looked at the father and son standing against the blue horizon of the lake, feeling an overwhelming peace settle into my bones.

The storm had passed.

The chains had been broken.

And our family was finally ready to begin.
