Chapter 7 - The Siege of Lake Forest

War did not arrive with drums; it arrived with fire.

Within forty-eight hours of the garden shooting, three of the Bertinelli family’s major shipping hubs in Newark burned to the ground in coordinated, untraceable industrial fires. Two high-ranking New York underbosses were arrested by federal task forces acting on anonymous, surgically precise financial leaks provided by Petrov Logistics.

Alexei was systematically cutting the heads off the Hydra.

But cornered beasts are the most dangerous.

On a rainy Thursday night, while Alexei was in Manhattan finishing negotiations with the remaining Five Families commission, the unthinkable happened.

A fuel tanker traveling along the private highway bordering the Petrov estate blew a tire, veered off the road, and smashed directly through the estate’s outer security gates, detonating in a colossal fireball that knocked out the primary power grid and disabled the backup generators for seven critical minutes.

In the ensuing smoke and blinding blackout, twelve heavily armed commandos breached the perimeter through the lake shoreline.

Inside the mansion, emergency red auxiliary lights hummed to life.

Maria sat bolted upright in her bed, the deafening explosion rattling the chandeliers. Before she could throw off the covers, Dmitri kicked her bedroom door open, his tactical vest loaded with magazines, blood already trickling down his temple.

“Grab Sophie!” Dmitri barked, tossing a ballistic vest onto her bed. “Put this on her! They’re inside the house!”

“Where is Alexei?” Maria screamed, scooping Sophie from her bed as the toddler began to wail in terror.

“Alexei is forty minutes away by helicopter! We have to get to the subterranean safe room!”

Automatic gunfire erupted downstairs in the grand foyer. The sound of wood splintering and men shouting in rapid Italian filled the stairwells. The Petrov guards were fighting fiercely, but the attackers were using military-grade flashbangs and thermal optics.

Dmitri led Maria and Sophie down the servant’s corridor, his weapon raised, clearing every blind corner with lethal precision.

Pop-pop-pop!

A gunman rounded the corner near the linen chute. Dmitri fired three rounds through his center mass before the man could raise his barrel. The commando crashed to the floor, knocking over a brass lamp.

“Keep moving!” Dmitri pushed Maria toward the heavy steel blast door at the end of the east hallway.

They reached the door. Dmitri punched in the six-digit override code. The hydraulic lock hissed open.

“Get in!” Dmitri shoved Maria and Sophie inside the reinforced bunker. “Do not open this door for anyone until you hear Alexei’s voice! Do you understand me?”

“Dmitri, come inside!” Maria pleaded, grabbing his tactical vest.

“My job is to buy forty minutes,” Dmitri said with a grim, bloody grin. He pulled the manual lever from the outside. “Take care of the little doctor, Maria.”

The four-inch steel door slammed shut. The magnetic bolts engaged with a deafening, final clunk.

Inside the bunker, it was cold, quiet, and illuminated by a single amber emergency bulb.

Sophie sat on the concrete floor, clutching her battered dollar-store medical kit against her chest, her small body trembling uncontrollably as the muffled thuds of explosions and gunfire vibrated through the foot-thick concrete walls above.

“Mommy,” Sophie whispered, tears tracking through the dust on her cheeks. “Is the bad man coming to break my stethoscope?”

Maria pulled her daughter into her lap, wrapping her arms around the child with every ounce of strength in her body.

“No, baby,” Maria whispered, kissing her hair while tears streamed down her own face. “The bad men aren't coming in here. Because the Iron Wolf is coming home.”
