Chapter 6 - Unmasked

The revelation of Gabriel's preemptive strike hung in the air between them like a living thing.

For four years, Norah had believed she knew Gabriel Dante. She knew his meticulous routines, his intolerance for incompetence, his stoic, almost monkish dedication to his work. She had thought of him as an immovable corporate mountain.

She had never realized that beneath the bespoke suits and the quiet authority lay a man who lived three moves ahead of the deadliest predators in the country.

"You're not going to trade me," Norah said, her voice regaining its composure as she pulled a chair up to the central monitor.

"I would burn this city to the ground before I handed you over to Harlan Vance," Gabriel said simply, leaning over the back of her chair.

"Good," Norah said, her eyes flashing with a sudden, fierce determination. "Because I don't want to be traded. I want to ruin him."

Liam re-entered the study, carrying three fresh cups of black coffee. Norah took one, drinking it black, barely wincing at the heat.

"Liam, pull up the Port Authority customs clearance logs for the last six months," she ordered. Her administrative instincts—the sharp, analytical mind that had made her indispensable to Gabriel—were overriding her fear.

"On it," Liam said, fingers flying.

"What are you looking for?" Gabriel asked, watching her intently.

"Vance didn't just pick Jared out of thin air," Norah said, her eyes scanning the cascades of maritime shipping numbers. "Jared was a mid-level rail dispatcher. How did Vance's syndicate know Jared was dating the executive assistant to Gabriel Dante? I never brought Jared to company functions. I never posted about him on social media."

Gabriel’s eyes narrowed. "Someone pointed him toward you."

"Exactly," Norah said, tapping the screen. "Look at the rail transfers for the Pier Four staging ground. Jared's brokerage firm received a three-million-dollar logistics subcontract three months ago—the exact week Jared and I started dating seriously. Who approved that subcontract?"

Liam ran the cryptographic audit. Five seconds later, a name popped up in bright amber text:

*ARTHUR PENDLETON – CHIEF COMPLIANCE OFFICER, DANTE ENTERPRISES.*

The study fell dead silent.

Arthur Pendleton was a member of Gabriel’s inner circle. He had been with the company for twelve years. He sat on the executive board. He had attended Gabriel’s father’s funeral.

"Pendleton," Gabriel whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth.

"He sold you out," Norah said, turning to look at Gabriel. "Pendleton knew I had the dual-factor physical security tokens for the autonomous fleet. He knew Vance couldn't crack your servers directly, so he orchestrated Jared's firm getting the rail contract, introduced Jared to the circuit where I spent my Friday evenings, and coached him on how to get close to me."

The entire horrific tapestry was finally laid bare.

Jared wasn't just an abusive degenerate with a gambling problem. He was a weapon designed by Gabriel’s own board member to breach Gabriel’s defenses through the only vulnerability Gabriel had: his complete, unyielding trust in Norah Hayes.

Gabriel stood completely motionless. When he spoke, his voice was terrifyingly calm.

"Twelve years," Gabriel said softly. "I gave that man twenty percent of our logistics equity."

"He was leveraged," Liam interjected, typing rapidly. "I’m looking at Pendleton’s offshore accounts in the Caymans right now. Vance’s foreign backers wired five million dollars to a shell company in Pendleton's wife's name last Tuesday."

"He needed Jared to extract the manifest so Vance could hijack the *Promethean* without firing a shot," Norah realized. "And when I fought Jared off last night, the whole plan began to unravel. That's why Jared panicked and came to the tower. Pendleton told him Vance would kill him if he didn't fix it."

Norah stood up, stepping directly into Gabriel’s space. Her chin was lifted, her blonde hair tucked behind her ears, the dark purple bruise beneath her eye stark and undeniable under the fluorescent lights.

"We have them," Norah said. "We have the money trail. We have Jared's testimony. We have Pendleton's shell accounts. We don't have to wait for midnight at Pier Four. We can crush them right now."

Gabriel looked down at her. His gaze was intense, burning with an emotion she had never seen in him during four years of corporate battles.

"You are extraordinary," he murmured.

Norah felt her breath catch. "Gabriel..."

"For four years, I told myself that keeping you at arm's length was protecting you," he said, his voice low, private, shutting out the rest of the room. "I told myself that if I brought you into the dark parts of my life, it would poison you. But you see through the darkness faster than I do."

He raised his hand. His fingers hovered just a millimeter from the bruised skin of her cheek, hesitant, reverent, before resting gently against her jawline.

"I will never ask you to hide again," he said.

Before Norah could answer, before the electric tension between their lips could bridge the final inch, the estate's perimeter alarm shattered the silence.

A harsh, crimson strobe began flashing across the ceiling.

Liam leaped up from his chair. "Perimeter breach! North gate! We have three black SUVs running the private road!"

Marco’s voice crackled violently over Gabriel’s radio:

*“Boss! Vance didn't wait for midnight! Pendleton gave them the coordinates to the safe house! They’re at the gate!”*
