Chapter 9 - The Father Who Was Never Buried|

Amelia had spent twenty-nine years believing her father was dead.

Now Lorenzo's mother was warning them not to search for him.

She stood beside Lorenzo in the hospital corridor, listening to the phone.

"Why?" Lorenzo demanded.

Elena hesitated.

"Gabriel Moretti was involved in something terrible."

Amelia felt cold.

"What?"

Elena's voice trembled.

"An agreement with Victor."

Lorenzo looked at Amelia.

She shook her head.

Her father had been dead for most of her life.

She barely remembered his face.

But she remembered his voice.

The way he sang while cooking breakfast.

The little wooden horse he'd carved for her.

Could the man from those memories have been involved in crimes?

She swallowed.

"Elena?"

A pause.

"Yes?"

"Is my father alive?"

Silence.

Then Elena whispered:

"I believe so."

Amelia covered her mouth.

The corridor seemed to tilt.

Lorenzo reached toward her.

She nodded, allowing him to steady her.

"Where is he?" she asked.

Elena hesitated.

"I don't know."

Amelia closed her eyes.

"But you know something."

"Yes."

"Then tell me."

Elena took a shaky breath.

"Gabriel helped Victor move money through the maritime company. When he realized what the operation had become, he tried to leave."

Amelia swallowed.

"And?"

"Victor threatened his family."

Her heart tightened.

"My mother?"

"Yes."

"And me?"

Elena began crying.

"Yes."

Amelia pressed a hand against her chest.

For years, she'd believed her parents had simply been victims of a random accident.

Now every memory felt fragile.

Elena continued.

"Gabriel disappeared because he thought staying would put you in danger."

Amelia looked away.

That explanation sounded painfully familiar.

Everyone kept disappearing to protect someone.

Everyone kept making decisions for the people they loved.

And the people left behind were forced to live with the consequences.

"Why didn't he come back?" Amelia whispered.

Elena hesitated.

"Perhaps he was afraid."

Amelia laughed bitterly.

"Then he should have found another way."

Silence.

Lorenzo looked at her.

Something in his expression softened.

He understood.

He had nearly lost Amelia because she believed leaving was the only way to protect Isabella.

Now he was seeing the same pattern repeated across generations.

Fear disguised as sacrifice.

Silence disguised as love.

Control disguised as protection.

Elena spoke again.

"Amelia, your father left something for you."

Her heart raced.

"What?"

"A letter."

I swallowed.

"Where?"

"With a lawyer in New York."

Amelia closed her eyes.

Another letter.

Another secret.

Another person explaining the past from a distance.

She took a breath.

"Then send it to my attorney."

Elena nodded.

"I will."

After the call, Lorenzo looked at Amelia.

"Are you okay?"

She gave a sad smile.

"No."

He nodded.

"Fair answer."

For a moment, she almost laughed.

Then she looked toward Isabella's room.

"What happens now?"

Lorenzo took a breath.

"We keep investigating."

"And Victor?"

"We let the evidence lead us."

She studied him.

For years, Lorenzo had been known for his temper.

His control.

His reputation.

Now he was learning patience.

Not perfectly.

Not without difficulty.

But genuinely.

Amelia looked at him.

"Enzo?"

His eyes softened.

"Yes?"

"Thank you for listening."

He swallowed.

"Thank you for giving me the chance."

The following morning, Amelia's attorney received the letter.

It was handwritten.

Dated eighteen years earlier.

Amelia opened it in a private office.

Lorenzo sat beside her, but only after she asked him to stay.

She unfolded the paper.

My darling Amelia,

If you're reading this, then you've discovered that I did not die when you were a child.

Tears filled her eyes.

She continued.

I wanted to return.

Every year, I promised myself I would.

But I made terrible choices, and those choices put you and your mother in danger.

Her hands trembled.

Victor Moretti took everything from us.

But he was not the only person responsible.

Amelia swallowed.

Then the next sentence made her stop breathing.

Antonio Bianchi helped him.

Lorenzo went still.

His father.

The man whose death they were now investigating.

Amelia continued.

I trusted Antonio.

That was my greatest mistake.

Her eyes filled.

Then she reached the final paragraph.

If you ever meet Lorenzo Bianchi, remember that he is not his father.

Amelia looked up.

Lorenzo stared at her.

Neither spoke.

Then she read the final sentence.

But never tell Lorenzo what happened the night his mother disappeared until he knows who Isabella really is.

Amelia froze.

"Isabella?"

Lorenzo frowned.

"My sister?"

Before she could answer, Isabella entered the office.

She looked pale.

Her eyes were filled with tears.

"Amelia."

Amelia slowly stood.

"What?"

Isabella swallowed.

"There's something I need to tell you."

Lorenzo stepped forward.

"Isabella?"

His sister looked at him.

Then whispered:

"I'm not your father's daughter."

The room went completely silent.

Lorenzo stared.

"What?"

Isabella began crying.

Then looked directly at Amelia.

"Gabriel Moretti is my biological father."

Amelia stopped breathing.

Her father.

Isabella's father.

The same man.

That meant the woman she'd spent years loving like a sister was actually her half sister.

And Lorenzo?

The man she loved.

May you like

The man she nearly married.

Was standing between them, realizing his family had been built on secrets no one had dared explain.
