Chapter 10 - An Unwritten Dawn

The sun was rising over the Michigan shoreline, painting the gray water in brilliant strokes of gold, rose, and amber.

The safehouse was a secluded, glass-walled modern fortress nestled on the bluffs of Lake Michigan, surrounded by dense pine forests and heavily armed Moretti sentries.

Mateo was finally asleep in the upstairs master bedroom, exhausted from the night of terrors, clutching his coloring book against his chest.

I stood on the expansive wooden deck overlooking the water, wrapped in a thick wool blanket. My hand was cleanly re-stitched and bandaged, the throbbing pain finally dulled by the cool morning breeze.

The sound of footsteps approached.

Luca walked out onto the deck, wearing a simple black sweater and dark trousers. The terrifying warlord from last night was gone; in his place stood a man carrying the weight of a shattered empire, his dark eyes shadowed with exhaustion.

He handed me a steaming ceramic mug of coffee.

“He’s sleeping like an angel,” Luca said softly, leaning his forearms against the wooden railing beside me.

“He was very brave,” I murmured, taking a sip of the warm brew. “He’s his father’s son.”

Luca looked out over the endless expanse of water. “Russo’s network fell apart by dawn. Marco confirmed that Isabella’s freighter left port an hour ago. The Vance name is erased from politics. By noon, every cartel leader in this state will know that coming after this family means total annihilation.”

I pulled the blanket tighter around my shoulders. “So it’s over.”

“The war is over,” Luca agreed.

Then, he turned to face me.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out two items, placing them on the wide railing between us.

The first was an American passport with my real name—*Emma Hayes*—along with the deeds to a multi-million-dollar estate in Florence, Italy, and a black banking card with unlimited credit.

The second item was a simple, heavy silver ring, bearing the ancient Moretti crest.

My breath hitched. I looked from the documents to the ring, then up into his dark, penetrating eyes.

“What is this, Luca?” I whispered.

“Choice,” Luca said, his voice dropping into that deep, hypnotic baritone that made my heart race. “Your father’s debt has been repaid a thousand times over. On the left is freedom, Emma. You can take the money, take the estate in Italy, and walk away from this blood. You will never have to duck from a bullet again. You will never have to hear the sound of a gun. You can be safe, wealthy, and free.”

My throat tightened. “And on the right?”

Luca stepped closer, his chest nearly brushing mine. He reached out, his warm, strong hand resting gently against the curve of my neck, his thumb tracing my jawline.

“On the right is a life in the shadows,” Luca murmured, his gaze burning into mine with an intensity that took my breath away. “On the right is a city that will fear you, an empire that will bow to you, and a little boy who will never have to cry for his mother again.”

He paused, his thumb brushing lightly across my lower lip.

“And a man,” Luca whispered, “who will burn down the entire world before he lets anyone lay a finger on you.”

The morning wind whipped through the pines, carrying the fresh scent of lake water and pine needles.

Down in the bay, a sleek black helicopter was idling, waiting to take the passenger to Europe.

And inside the house, the small, innocent laughter of Mateo waking up echoed through the open glass doors.

I looked down at the railing.

At the passport that offered escape.

May you like

And at the silver crest that offered a throne.

My fingers slowly reached out across the wood.
