Chapter 2 - THE MAN WHO CALLED HIM SON|

For thirty-nine years, Luca Moretti had believed he knew exactly who his enemies were.

He had buried some of them.

He had forgiven others.

And he had spent most of his adult life making sure none of them ever stepped inside his home.

But the silver-haired man standing beneath his chandelier had just called him son.

And suddenly, Luca realized the most dangerous stranger in the room might be someone connected to him by blood.

"Hello, Luca," the elderly man repeated.

His voice was smooth.

Almost affectionate.

The gold handle of his walking cane caught the chandelier light as he approached the dining table.

Nobody moved.

Twenty-four guests watched their host stare at the man who had arrived uninvited.

Vanessa stood beside her chair, her face pale beneath her expensive makeup.

Mrs. Carter's fingers were still wrapped around Luca's sleeve.

"Don't let him come closer," she whispered.

Luca felt her trembling.

He had known Mrs. Carter since childhood.

He knew the difference between her ordinary worries and genuine terror.

This was terror.

"Stay behind me," he told her quietly.

Then he looked at the stranger.

"Salvatore Bellini."

The old man's smile widened.

"So you've finally learned the truth."

Luca slowly placed the birth certificate on the table.

"I learned your name."

Salvatore glanced at the paper.

"That's a beginning."

"Who invited you into my house?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"I did."

Every eye turned toward her.

Luca didn't look away from Salvatore.

"Then you can both explain why."

Salvatore chuckled.

"Must everything be a confrontation?"

"You entered my home without my permission."

"Your fiancée invited her father."

"My former fiancée."

The words fell across the room like broken glass.

Vanessa flinched.

"Luca, please."

He removed the engagement ring box from his jacket pocket.

He had been carrying it because the jeweler had resized Vanessa's wedding band that afternoon.

Now he placed the velvet box beside her wineglass.

"The wedding is canceled."

A woman near the fireplace gasped.

Vanessa gripped the chair.

"You can't do this in front of everyone."

Luca finally looked at her.

"You tied a seventy-year-old woman to a chair in front of everyone."

Tears filled Vanessa's eyes.

"I made a mistake."

"No."

His voice remained frighteningly calm.

"A mistake is forgetting an anniversary."

He glanced at Mrs. Carter's injured wrists.

"What you did was a choice."

Salvatore struck his cane against the marble floor.

"Enough."

Luca turned toward him.

The old man straightened.

"You will not embarrass my daughter."

Something changed in Luca's expression.

He had heard that tone before.

Not from Salvatore.

From men who believed power gave them permission to own other people's lives.

"You don't give orders in this house," Luca said.

Salvatore smiled again.

"Your father used to say the same thing."

Luca went still.

"Giovanni?"

The old man nodded.

"Ah, yes."

"The man who raised me."

"The man who stole you."

Mrs. Carter made a small sound.

Luca immediately turned.

She was shaking her head.

"Don't believe him, Lu."

Salvatore looked at her.

"Margaret Carter."

His smile disappeared.

"Still protecting the Moretti family after all these years."

Mrs. Carter lifted her chin.

"And I would do it again."

Luca noticed the way Salvatore studied her.

It wasn't the look of a stranger recognizing an old employee.

It was the look of someone remembering an unfinished argument.

Before Luca could speak, his phone vibrated.

Daniel.

He answered without taking his eyes off Salvatore.

"Talk."

"Boss, the hospital has confirmed Eleanor is stable for now."

Luca closed his eyes briefly.

"Thank God."

"But there's a problem."

"What problem?"

"Someone called the hospital claiming to be her husband and requested her transfer."

Luca's eyes opened.

"Who?"

"Salvatore Bellini."

The dining room became terribly quiet.

Luca looked directly at the elderly man.

"You're not going anywhere near her."

Salvatore slowly raised an eyebrow.

"She's still my wife, Luca."

"Not according to anything I've seen."

"Marriage records can disappear."

"So can people, apparently."

For the first time, the old man's smile vanished completely.

Luca spoke into the phone.

"Tell the hospital not to release Eleanor to anyone without her consent and the medical team's approval."

"Understood."

"And Daniel?"

"Yes, boss?"

"Get Mrs. Carter medical attention and have security preserve every recording from tonight."

"Already arranging it."

Luca ended the call.

Then he looked at Olivia.

I had been standing beside Mrs. Carter, holding a clean towel against her bleeding wrist.

My hands were still shaking.

"Olivia."

"Yes, Mr. Moretti?"

"You're coming with us."

I blinked.

"To the hospital?"

He nodded.

"Mrs. Carter trusts you."

I looked toward the elderly woman.

She was watching me with frightened eyes.

"Of course," I said.

Salvatore laughed softly.

"You're taking a maid to a family meeting?"

Luca looked at him.

"She's shown more loyalty tonight than most of the people wearing diamonds in this room."

I lowered my eyes.

Nobody had ever defended me like that before.

Especially not a man like Luca Moretti.

Salvatore approached another step.

"Luca, listen carefully."

"I've heard enough."

"No, you haven't."

The old man reached into his jacket.

Immediately, two security guards moved toward him.

Salvatore stopped.

"Relax, gentlemen."

He removed a small photograph.

Then placed it on the table.

I saw Luca look down.

The photograph showed a much younger Giovanni Moretti standing beside a dark automobile.

A woman stood nearby.

Eleanor.

And in her arms was a baby.

But something else was visible.

A second man stood behind Giovanni.

He had one hand resting on the baby's blanket.

Salvatore.

Luca studied the photograph.

"Where was this taken?"

"Outside the hospital."

"On the day I was born?"

"Three days later."

Mrs. Carter covered her mouth.

Salvatore leaned forward.

"Your beloved Giovanni didn't rescue you from me, Luca."

His voice became cold.

"He made an agreement."

Luca stared at him.

"What agreement?"

Salvatore pointed to the photograph.

"He promised to raise you as his own."

"Why?"

"Because I had something he wanted."

Luca waited.

Salvatore's eyes moved toward the guests.

Then back to his son.

"Control of the Chicago docks."

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

The chandelier light reflected from the empty wineglasses.

Somewhere beyond the dining room, a grandfather clock struck nine.

Luca felt as though the entire floor had shifted beneath him.

"You traded a child for business territory?"

Salvatore tilted his head.

"That's an emotional interpretation."

Luca stepped closer.

"Then give me a better one."

"You were safer with Giovanni."

"Safer from whom?"

Salvatore didn't answer.

Mrs. Carter suddenly spoke.

"From you."

The old man turned.

"Margaret."

"No."

Her voice was trembling, but she continued.

"You don't get to stand here and make yourself the hero."

Salvatore's eyes narrowed.

"Be careful."

Luca immediately moved between them.

"Threaten her again."

His voice dropped.

"And you'll learn exactly how unwelcome you are."

Salvatore studied him.

Then gave a strange little smile.

"You really are my son."

Luca didn't blink.

"Blood doesn't make you my father."

For a moment, genuine anger flashed across Salvatore's face.

Then he glanced toward Vanessa.

"Get your things."

Vanessa stared at him.

"Dad?"

"We're leaving."

She looked toward Luca.

"But the wedding—"

"There is no wedding," Luca said.

Her face crumpled.

"You promised you loved me."

Luca looked at her for a long moment.

"I loved the person you pretended to be."

She began crying.

But he had already turned away.

Daniel entered through the far doorway with two members of his security team.

"Boss, the car is ready."

Luca nodded.

"Escort Mr. Bellini and his daughter off the property."

Salvatore leaned on his cane.

Before leaving, he stopped beside Luca.

"You think Eleanor will tell you everything."

Luca remained silent.

Salvatore smiled.

"Ask her what happened on the night your real father died."

Luca frowned.

"You're listed as my father."

Salvatore's smile widened.

"Exactly."

Then he walked away.

Vanessa followed him, sobbing quietly.

The guests began gathering their coats.

Nobody wanted to be the last person standing in that dining room.

Within minutes, the celebration had become an abandoned banquet.

Crystal glasses remained half full.

Candles burned beside untouched desserts.

And Mrs. Carter sat in her chair, staring at the photograph of a woman she had kept hidden for decades.

Luca crouched in front of her.

"Margaret."

She looked up.

He almost never used her first name.

"Tell me what he meant."

The elderly woman shook her head.

"Not here, sweetheart."

"Why?"

"Because I don't know who might still be listening."

A chill ran through me.

Luca noticed.

He looked toward the security cameras.

Then toward the doorway where Salvatore had disappeared.

"Daniel."

"Yes, boss?"

"Check every access point and replace the personnel assigned to Vanessa."

Daniel nodded.

"Immediately."

Mrs. Carter reached for Luca's hand.

"Please," she whispered.

"Go to Eleanor."

Luca hesitated.

"You're coming with me."

She shook her head.

"The doctor should examine these wrists first."

I squeezed her shoulder.

"I'll stay with you until then."

Luca looked at me.

There was something different in his eyes now.

Not suspicion.

Not the distant politeness of an employer addressing a servant.

Trust.

"Don't let her out of your sight."

"I won't."

He stood.

But before he reached the doorway, Mrs. Carter called his name.

"Lu."

He turned.

She was crying again.

"Whatever you hear tonight, remember something."

"What?"

"Giovanni loved you."

Luca swallowed.

She continued.

"And so did the woman who raised you."

He nodded slowly.

"I know."

Mrs. Carter shook her head.

"No, sweetheart."

Her voice broke.

"You don't know how much they sacrificed."

Luca stared at her.

Then left for the hospital.

I watched his black car disappear beyond the mansion gates.

Only then did Mrs. Carter turn toward me.

"Olivia."

"Yes, ma'am?"

She pressed something into my hand.

A tiny silver key.

I looked down.

"What is this?"

Her eyes moved toward the empty dining room.

"There's a locked compartment beneath the blue sewing box."

I frowned.

"But you already showed him the birth certificate."

She nodded.

"That was what Eleanor wanted him to see."

"Then what's in the compartment?"

Mrs. Carter's lips trembled.

"Something Giovanni wanted buried."

I stared at the key.

She gripped my hand.

"Listen carefully, sweetheart."

I leaned closer.

"If anything happens to me, you must give that key to Luca."

My stomach tightened.

"Nothing is going to happen to you."

She looked toward the doorway.

May you like

Then whispered the words I would remember for the rest of my life.

"That's what Eleanor said the night they took her baby."
