Chapter 13 - THE NIGHT THE TRUTH CAME OUT

|

“Absolutely not.”

Those were Detective Morales's first words when Luca told her he intended to meet Vanessa.

We were standing in the Moretti library.

It was eleven seventeen at night.

Vanessa's deadline was midnight.

And every minute that passed felt like another step toward disaster.

“She's holding Dominic,” Luca said. “If he can prove what happened to my father, we need him alive.”

Morales folded her arms.

“You're not going alone.”

“That's what she demanded.”

“Criminal suspects don't get to dictate how an investigation operates.”

Luca looked toward the window.

For a moment, I recognized the man everyone feared.

The man who could solve problems with a telephone call and a threat.

Then he turned back.

“What do you suggest?”

Morales placed a photograph on the table.

It showed a deserted warehouse near the Chicago River.

“Vanessa sent this location in a follow-up message. We're establishing whether she's there.”

I leaned forward.

The building looked abandoned.

Several windows were broken.

An old loading dock faced the water.

“That's not far from the warehouse where Antonio died,” I whispered.

Luca stared at the photograph.

“No,” he said. “It's across the river.”

Morales nodded.

“We believe she chose it deliberately.”

Luca clenched his fists.

“She wants me to think about my father.”

“Probably,” Morales said. “And she wants you emotional enough to make mistakes.”

I looked at him.

“Then don't give her what she wants.”

He turned toward me.

I continued.

“Your mother already lost her husband. She nearly lost her own life. She doesn't deserve to lose you too.”

For a long moment, he simply stared.

Then he nodded.

“Okay.”

Morales arranged a coordinated response involving officers trained for hostage situations.

Luca agreed to follow their instructions.

I remained at the mansion with Eleanor.

Or at least, that was the plan.

Until Eleanor took my hand.

I need to talk to him.

“Luca?”

She nodded.

I helped her video-call her son.

His face appeared on the screen.

“Mom?”

Eleanor stared at him.

Then raised her hands.

Come home.

Luca swallowed.

“I will.”

She shook her head.

Promise.

His eyes filled with tears.

“I promise.”

Then she signed something that made me turn away.

I don't need revenge. I need my son.

Luca closed his eyes.

“I understand.”

At eleven forty-eight, Vanessa called.

This time, the police monitored the conversation with Luca's consent.

Her voice sounded almost cheerful.

“Hello, darling.”

Luca said nothing.

“Are you coming?”

“Where's Dominic?”

Vanessa laughed.

“Still trying to be a hero, even after everything he did.”

“Let me speak to him.”

A muffled sound came through the phone.

Then Dominic's voice.

“Luca?”

Luca went still.

“Dominic.”

“Don't come.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“Oh, how touching.”

Luca's expression hardened.

“What do you want?”

“Everything you took from my father.”

“You mean everything your father stole?”

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, “You have no idea what your family did to mine.”

“My father discovered Richard's fraud.”

“Your father destroyed us!”

“No,” Luca said. “Your father destroyed himself.”

Vanessa's voice changed.

“You think you're better than him?”

Luca looked toward Morales.

Then replied, “No. But I'm done becoming like him.”

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Vanessa whispered, “Midnight, Luca. Or Dominic pays for his mistakes.”

She ended the call.

Morales immediately coordinated with the officers near the warehouse.

A police negotiator attempted to reestablish contact.

The next fifteen minutes were agonizing.

I sat beside Eleanor, holding her hand while she watched the clock.

Midnight passed.

Then twelve oh-five.

At twelve twelve, Morales called.

“Dominic is alive,” she said.

I exhaled.

“What happened?”

“Officers established contact and secured his release. He's receiving medical attention.”

“And Vanessa?”

“She surrendered after negotiations.”

I closed my eyes.

It was over.

Or so I thought.

Then Morales continued.

“We found a recording device on Dominic. He had kept it hidden since the day of the crash.”

My heart started pounding.

“What recording?”

“According to Dominic, Richard Bellini spoke to him before the accident. Dominic secretly recorded their conversation because he feared Bellini would eventually turn on him.”

I stared at the phone.

“Does it prove anything?”

“We need to authenticate it. But the recorded conversation includes Richard discussing payments, Eleanor's vehicle, and the earlier warehouse fire.”

My mouth went dry.

“Antonio?”

Morales paused.

“Yes.”

I gripped the edge of the table.

The pieces were finally coming together.

Richard Bellini had apparently helped arrange Antonio's death years earlier.

Dominic had later accepted money to assist with the scheme against Eleanor.

But at the last moment, he tried to save her.

He survived the crash and fled rather than admit his involvement.

Vanessa had learned he possessed evidence that could destroy her father.

And now, cornered by investigators, she had attempted to use Dominic as leverage.

There was one more development.

“Richard has been located,” Morales said. “Federal investigators detained him while he attempted to leave the country.”

I felt tears fill my eyes.

“Does Luca know?”

“He does.”

“Is he okay?”

A pause.

“He asked me to tell you something.”

“What?”

Morales's voice softened.

“He said to tell his mother he's coming home.”

I looked toward Eleanor.

She was watching my face.

Waiting.

I raised my hands.

He is safe.

Her eyes filled with tears.

Coming home?

I nodded.

She covered her mouth.

Then began to cry.

Not the frightened tears I had seen at dinner.

Not the frustrated tears of someone struggling to make herself understood.

These were tears of relief.

At nearly two in the morning, Luca walked through the mansion doors.

He looked exhausted.

His shirt was wrinkled.

His hair was a mess.

But he was alive.

Eleanor reached for him.

He crossed the room and knelt beside her wheelchair.

She wrapped her arms around his neck.

For a long time, neither moved.

Then Luca whispered, “I'm here, Mom.”

She kissed his forehead.

He looked over her shoulder at me.

His eyes were wet.

And he mouthed two words.

“Thank you.”

But the story wasn't finished.

Not yet.

Because the following morning, Luca received a formal notice from federal investigators.

The investigation into Richard Bellini had uncovered financial transactions involving several Moretti companies.

And Luca's own name appeared on some of them.
