Chapter 9 - The House by the Lake|

The house stood behind a narrow private road near Lake Geneva.
Tall pine trees surrounded the property.
A black iron gate blocked the entrance.
And beyond it, warm light glowed through the windows of a two-story stone residence.
I sat in the back of a police vehicle, my hands clasped tightly in my lap.
Luca stood outside speaking with Detective Michael Ramirez.
Marco remained nearby.
Nobody raised their voice.
Nobody rushed the gate.
The police had confirmed Rosa was inside.
But they were still arranging a safe approach.
Every minute felt unbearable.
I kept imagining her sitting alone.
Wondering whether Luca believed she'd chosen to leave.
Wondering whether Vanessa had finally convinced everyone she was too old to make her own decisions.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message.
From an unknown number.
Hannah?
My heart stopped.
I typed quickly.
Who is this?
A response appeared.
Rosa.
I nearly cried.
I looked toward Luca.
“Mr. Moretti!”
He hurried over.
“What?”
I showed him the screen.
His expression changed.
“Mom?”
I nodded.
Another message arrived.
I found a phone in the kitchen. I don't know how long I have.
Luca crouched beside the vehicle.
“Tell her we're outside.”
I typed.
We're here. Luca is here. Police are helping. Are you hurt?
The reply came slowly.
No. Frightened.
Tears filled my eyes.
Then another message.
She wants my signature.
Luca closed his eyes.
I typed again.
Don't sign anything. Help is coming.
Several seconds passed.
Then Rosa replied.
I told her no.
I began crying.
Luca gently placed a hand on my shoulder.
Then another message appeared.
Hannah, please tell Luca I never wanted to leave him.
I covered my mouth.
Luca read it.
His expression broke.
He reached for the phone.
Then typed himself.
Mom, I know. I love you. We're bringing you home.
A minute passed.
Then the screen lit up.
I love you too, sweetheart.
Luca held the phone against his forehead.
For a moment, he looked like a little boy desperate to reach his mother.
Then Detective Ramirez approached.
“We've established contact with the people inside.”
Luca straightened.
“And?”
“Vanessa is demanding that Rosa sign a declaration relinquishing her residential rights and approving a property transfer.”
Luca's jaw tightened.
“That's coercion.”
“Yes.”
Ramirez looked toward the house.
“We're arranging a controlled surrender.”
I watched the front windows.
Then a shadow moved behind the curtains.
My heart hammered.
A few minutes later, the front door opened.
Vanessa appeared.
She wore a cream-colored coat and black trousers.
Even from a distance, I could see the fury on her face.
Two officers approached cautiously.
I couldn't hear every word.
But I saw Vanessa begin shouting.
Then she pointed toward the vehicles.
Toward Luca.
Toward me.
Luca remained still.
His expression was unreadable.
Finally, Vanessa lowered her hands.
An officer stepped closer.
She was detained without violence.
I barely noticed.
Because behind her, another figure appeared.
Rosa.
She stood in the doorway wearing her navy cardigan.
Her cane shook in her hand.
An officer supported her elbow.
I opened the vehicle door before anyone could stop me.
“Hannah,” Luca said sharply.
But he was already moving too.
We reached Rosa together.
The moment she saw Luca, she began crying.
“Sweetheart.”
He wrapped his arms around her.
“Mom.”
She clung to him.
“I didn't want to go.”
“I know.”
“I told her I wanted to stay home.”
“I know, Mom.”
Her voice broke.
“I thought you'd believe I'd chosen to leave.”
Luca held her tighter.
“Never.”
I stood beside them, tears running down my face.
Then Rosa reached for me.
“Hannah.”
I moved closer.
She took my hand.
“You came.”
I nodded.
“Of course.”
Her fingers tightened.
“I knew you would.”
For several seconds, the three of us stood together beneath the cold Wisconsin sky.
Then Rosa looked at Luca.
“There's something you need to know.”
He brushed tears from her cheek.
“What?”
She glanced toward the house.
“Vanessa wasn't acting alone.”
Luca's expression changed.
“Daniel?”
Rosa shook her head.
“No.”
She swallowed.
“The man who arranged everything came here himself.”
Luca stared.
“Who?”
Rosa's voice trembled.
“Someone who used to work for your father.”
Luca frowned.
“What's his name?”
Rosa looked directly at him.
“Charles Whitmore.”
Luca went completely still.
I recognized the name.
Charles Whitmore was the family's longtime attorney.
The man who had prepared Luca's wedding documents.
May you like
The man who'd assured Rosa her retirement arrangements were perfectly legal.
And the man Luca had trusted to protect his family for nearly twenty years.
