Chapter 13 - THE TWILIGHT MONTHS

|

The strike at the lake house was the final dying gasp of the old syndicate.

Luca moved with ruthless legal precision, cooperating fully with state and federal investigators.

Within two months, every corrupt affiliate, rival enforcer, and treacherous associate was behind bars.

Luca completely liquidated his underworld ties, pouring his vast wealth into clean shipping, clean energy, and children’s hospitals.

The mafia boss was gone; only a devoted father and protector remained.

Autumn slowly bled into a peaceful, white Wisconsin winter.

The lake froze over into a glittering sheet of silver ice, and the massive stone fireplace crackled day and night.

Bruno had survived the attack, but the physical trauma had taken its irreversible toll on his fragile body.

He could no longer run across the snowy lawn.

Most days, he lay comfortably on a massive orthopedic heated bed right in front of the roaring hearth.

I spent every morning sitting beside him, feeding him roasted chicken by hand and massaging his stiff legs.

Luca would sit on the sofa behind us, reviewing legal contracts, frequently looking over with tender affection.

One quiet evening in late January, the house was filled with the soft aroma of pine needles and cinnamon.

Benjamin had fallen asleep on the floor beside Bruno, his arm thrown over the dog’s back as they watched the falling snow.

Luca walked over, carrying two mugs of hot tea, and sat beside me on the braided hearth rug.

“Dr. Hayes came by while you were in town today, Claire,” Luca said softly.

My heart clenched, knowing what that meant.

“How much longer?”

“Not long,” Luca murmured, taking my hand and bringing it to his lips.

“A few days, perhaps a week.”

“His lungs are weakening, but the doctor said he is not suffering.”

I leaned my head against Luca’s shoulder, watching the gentle rise and fall of Bruno’s chest.

“He held on until he knew Benjamin was truly safe,” I whispered.

“He held on until he knew you had Claire,” Luca corrected gently.

He shifted slightly, turning to face me completely in the warm glow of the firelight.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a simple, elegant platinum band inlaid with a single brilliant sapphire.

“I gave you a deed before, Claire, because I wanted you to know you had security.”

Luca’s voice was filled with a deep, humble vulnerability.

“Now, I am asking for your heart.”

“I don’t want to walk another day on this earth without you by my side as my wife, my partner, and Benjamin’s mother.”

I looked at the ring, then looked into the eyes of the man who had transformed from a feared mobster into my true love.

“I said yes five years ago, Luca, the moment I chose to protect your family.”

I smiled through my tears.

“I will love you until my very last breath.”

May you like

Luca slid the ring onto my finger and pulled me into a deep, passionate embrace, our tears mingling in the firelight.

Beside us, Bruno opened his cloudy eyes, let out a soft, contented sigh, and closed them once more in peace.
