Chapter 8 - The Siege

Before Luca could process the horror of the letter, the entire estate plunged into pitch-black darkness.
The gentle hum of the central heating, the soft amber glow of the library lamps, the exterior security spotlights—everything died simultaneously.
“Kill switch,” Marco shouted, instantly drawing his sidearm. “They cut the main municipal transformer!”
A high-pitched siren began to wail in the distance—the backup generators trying and failing to kick in. Then, the sickening sound of automatic gunfire erupted from the estate’s outer perimeter wall.
*Pop-pop-pop-pop!*
Glass shattered on the lower level.
“Lily!” I screamed, terror seizing my chest as I scrambled to my feet. “Matteo!”
Luca was already moving. In the darkness, he was pure lethal instinct. He grabbed my wrist, pulling me hard against his side as red emergency lights flickered to life along the baseboards, casting long, bloody shadows across the hallway.
“Marco! Get the south perimeter team to the guest cottage!” Luca ordered, his voice like iron. “Secure Lily Ward! Anyone breaches that fence, shoot to kill!”
“On it, boss!” Marco sprinted down the corridor, barking orders into his radio headset.
Luca turned to me, gripping both of my shoulders, forcing me to look directly into his eyes. “Emma, listen to me. Matteo is on the fourth floor in the safe room wing. We move together. You stay behind me, no matter what you see, no matter what you hear. Do you understand?”
I nodded frantically, tears of adrenaline stinging my eyes. “Yes.”
He pulled a sleek, black semi-automatic pistol from his holster, chambered a round with a loud *clack*, and led the way into the shadows.
The mansion had become a war zone.
Heavy, tactical footsteps echoed from the marble foyer below. Voices shouted in coded military jargon. These weren't petty thieves or disgruntled business associates; this was an armed, synchronized strike team.
Luca moved with terrifying efficiency. As we reached the top of the grand staircase, a masked man clad in black tactical gear burst through the double doors leading from the terrace, raising a suppressed rifle.
Luca fired twice.
*Crack. Crack.*
The intruder dropped instantly, crashing heavily against the marble balustrade. I clamped my hand over my mouth to stifle a scream, the smell of cordite burning my nostrils.
Luca didn't hesitate. He pulled me past the body and into the private family corridor, kicking open the door to Matteo’s nursery.
“Matteo!” I cried softly.
The nursery was empty.
My heart stopped. The little boy’s bed was rumpled, his stuffed bear thrown onto the floor.
“Matteo!” Luca called out, his voice laced with pure, unadulterated panic.
“Daddy?”
A tiny squeak came from the walk-in closet.
I rushed forward, ripping the closet door open. Matteo was curled into a ball behind a row of winter coats, clutching his knees, trembling so violently his teeth were chattering.
“Miss Emma!” he sobbed, throwing his little arms around my neck as I pulled him into my chest. “The bad men have flashlights!”
“I’ve got you, baby, I’ve got you,” I whispered, kissing his forehead, rocking him against me.
Luca stood in the nursery doorway, scanning the corridor. The gunfire outside was intensifying, but closer now. Heavy boots were pounding up the stairs.
“They’re coming for him,” Luca whispered, a horrifying realization dawning in his eyes. “This wasn't about Victor Vance’s pride. This was an extraction. They want Matteo.”
“Where do we go?” I pleaded, holding the boy tight.
“The library panic room,” Luca said. “It has an independent air filtration system and steel-reinforced walls. It’s the only place they can't breach with C4.”
We moved fast. Luca led us down the service staircase, bypassing the main hallway where gunshots and shouting echoed. Matteo buried his face in my neck, sobbing silently, while I held him with all the strength in my healing hand, ignoring the searing pain in my palm.
We reached the heavy oak doors of the library.
Suddenly, the side door splintered open.
A massive man in a tactical vest tackled Luca from the side, slamming him violently against the towering bookshelves. Books rained down like debris. Luca’s gun went skittering across the hardwood floor, sliding out of reach beneath a heavy leather armchair.
“Luca!” I screamed.
The intruder drew a combat knife, its serrated blade gleaming under the red emergency lights, driving his forearm against Luca’s throat. Luca roared, catching the man’s wrist with both hands, muscles straining, his veins bulging as he fought off the blade inches from his eye.
A second man stepped through the doorway, his weapon lowered, his eyes locking straight onto Matteo.
“Hand over the boy, girl,” the man growled, stepping toward me with outstretched hands. “And you get to walk out of here alive.”
Matteo screamed, clinging to my shirt.
Every ounce of fear inside me suddenly inverted. A blinding, primal rage ignited in my chest.
*Not this boy.*
*Not while I’m breathing.*
Beside me on the side table was the heavy, antique bronze bust of Dante that Luca kept by the reading lamp.
Without thinking, ignoring the tearing agony in my bandaged hand, I grabbed the heavy bronze bust with both hands, hoisted it with a desperate scream, and swung it with all the momentum in my body straight into the side of the man’s head.
*Crack!*
The bronze struck his temple with a sickening thud. The man’s eyes rolled back, and he collapsed like a felled tree, unconscious before he hit the rug.
Across the room, Luca used the distraction. He threw his head forward in a brutal headbutt, shattering his attacker’s nose. As the man staggered back howling in pain, Luca swept his legs out from under him, grabbed the combat knife as it dropped, and neutralized the threat in three lethal, ruthless strikes.
Breathing heavily, his face splattered with blood, Luca stood up.
He looked at the unconscious man at my feet, then at the bronze bust I was still clutching with trembling, bloody fingers, and finally at his son sobbing in my arms.
Luca crossed the room in two strides. He kicked the panic room keypad behind the false bookcase, entering a six-digit code.
The heavy steel wall groaned, sliding open to reveal a brightly lit, reinforced vault.
Luca pushed me and Matteo inside.
“Stay here,” he breathed, his voice raw.
“Luca, no! Come inside!” I begged, grabbing his bloody shirt. “Shut the door!”
“Marco and my men are still out there fighting for your sister,” Luca said, his eyes burning with an ancient, terrifying fire. He reached up, cupping the back of my neck, and kissed me hard, deep, and desperate. “I don't hide while my people bleed. Lock the door from the inside, Emma. Do not open it for anyone but me.”
“Luca—!”
May you like
The heavy steel door slid shut with a pneumatic hiss, sealing Matteo and me inside the impenetrable silence of the vault, leaving Luca alone in the dark to face the storm.
