Chapter 10 - The Secret Beneath the Moretti Empire|

The warehouse stood at the edge of the Chicago River, its brick walls dark against the evening sky.

I had never been there before.

At least, not since I was a little girl.

But I recognized the building from photographs.

The loading dock.

The rusted metal doors.

The broken windows near the roof.

Fourteen years earlier, my mother had told me my father died inside.

Now I was standing outside that same building, wondering whether he was waiting for me.

Luca stood beside me.

Antonio and two investigators had already entered.

We waited near the security vehicle.

My hands wouldn't stop shaking.

"Are you okay?" Luca asked.

I laughed weakly.

"No."

He nodded.

"Fair answer."

I looked at him.

For a moment, I wanted to lean against him.

To let someone else carry the weight of everything I'd learned.

But I'd spent too much of my life relying on other people's decisions.

I needed to stand on my own.

Luca seemed to understand.

He didn't touch me.

He simply remained beside me.

Then Antonio appeared at the warehouse entrance.

"Boss."

Luca straightened.

"What?"

"They're inside."

My heart stopped.

"Both of them?"

Antonio nodded.

"Yes."

Luca looked at me.

"Are you ready?"

I stared at the doorway.

For fourteen years, I'd imagined seeing my father again.

Sometimes I dreamed he was standing in our kitchen.

Sometimes he appeared at my high school graduation.

Sometimes he knocked on my apartment door carrying the same grocery bags he used to bring home every Friday.

Now the moment was here.

And I was terrified.

I took a breath.

"Yes."

We entered.

The warehouse smelled of dust, old wood, and river water.

Sunlight filtered through broken windows.

Near the center of the building stood two men.

One was Matteo Moretti.

The other was my father.

James Brooks.

Older.

Gray-haired.

Thinner.

But unmistakable.

My heart stopped.

"Dad?"

He turned.

For one terrible moment, he looked as though he couldn't believe I was real.

Then his eyes filled with tears.

"Natalie."

My knees weakened.

He took a step toward me.

I stepped backward.

He stopped.

The pain on his face nearly broke me.

"My little sparrow."

Tears poured down my cheeks.

I had imagined hearing that nickname again for fourteen years.

Now it hurt.

"Why?" I whispered.

He closed his eyes.

"Natalie..."

"Why did you leave us?"

His face crumpled.

"I was trying to protect you."

I shook my head.

"Everyone keeps saying that!"

My voice echoed through the warehouse.

"You let me think you were dead!"

"I know."

"You missed my graduation!"

Tears streamed down his face.

"I know."

"You missed everything!"

He covered his mouth.

I stared at him.

For years, I'd wondered what I would say if I saw him again.

Now I couldn't find enough words.

Finally, I whispered:

"Did you ever want to come home?"

He looked at me.

"Every single day."

My chest shattered.

I stepped forward.

He opened his arms.

And I ran into them.

For a moment, I was fourteen again.

A little girl who had lost her father.

A little girl who still remembered the smell of his coat.

I held him so tightly that he began crying harder.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

I closed my eyes.

"I know."

But I also knew something else.

Love didn't erase fourteen years.

And forgiveness wouldn't come in one afternoon.

When I finally stepped back, Luca was standing across the warehouse facing Matteo.

The brothers stared at each other.

For seven years, Luca had believed Matteo was dead.

Now he stood only a few feet away.

"Matteo."

His younger brother smiled sadly.

"Hello, Luca."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Where have you been?"

Matteo looked toward my father.

"Hiding."

"From whom?"

Matteo hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Our father."

Luca went still.

"Vittorio?"

Matteo nodded.

"He ordered the warehouse fire."

Silence.

My father closed his eyes.

I stared.

"The fire that supposedly killed you?"

Matteo nodded.

"And your father."

I looked at James.

He swallowed.

"We discovered records showing that several companies were moving money through false shipping contracts."

Luca stared.

"Richard Bellini?"

My father nodded.

"Yes."

"And Vittorio?"

Matteo looked away.

"He was involved."

Luca's face hardened.

For years, he'd believed his father built the Moretti empire through intelligence, discipline, and ruthless determination.

Now he was discovering that some of its foundations might have been fraudulent.

"What happened?" Luca asked.

Matteo took a breath.

"We gathered evidence. Planned to take it to investigators."

"And?"

"Our father found out."

Silence.

Then Matteo continued.

"He arranged the fire. Made it look like an accident. And told everyone we were dead."

Luca stared.

"Why didn't you come back?"

Matteo looked ashamed.

"Because we believed he would hurt our families."

My father nodded.

"Your brother helped me escape."

I looked at Matteo.

He smiled sadly.

"James helped me first."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Luca asked:

"Where is Vittorio now?"

Matteo's expression changed.

"We don't know."

Luca looked sharply at him.

"You were with him at the hotel."

Matteo nodded.

"Yes."

"Then you know where he went."

Matteo hesitated.

"He wanted to negotiate."

Luca stared.

"Negotiate what?"

"The evidence."

My stomach tightened.

"What evidence?"

My father turned toward me.

"Natalie, there's something I need you to understand."

I looked at him.

"What?"

"The records we found weren't only about stolen money."

Silence.

He continued.

"They involved several people who had disappeared."

My heart raced.

"Disappeared?"

"Yes."

I thought of the warehouse.

The false deaths.

The missing men.

The secret accounts.

Then my father said something that made Luca look up sharply.

"Some of those people were hidden under new identities."

Luca frowned.

"Who?"

James looked toward Matteo.

Then back at me.

"One of them was Vanessa's son."

My stomach dropped.

"Oliver?"

My father nodded.

I stared.

"Oliver is nine years old."

"Yes."

"Why would he have a false identity?"

Matteo stepped forward.

"Because someone changed his birth records."

Luca froze.

"What?"

Matteo looked down.

"Oliver's original birth certificate didn't list Vanessa Bellini as his mother."

The warehouse became completely silent.

I stared at him.

"But Margaret raised him."

"Yes."

"And Vanessa gave birth to him?"

Matteo hesitated.

"That's what Vanessa told everyone."

My heart raced.

"Then who is his mother?"

Matteo looked at Luca.

His eyes filled with something painful.

"That's the secret I was trying to protect."

Luca stepped closer.

"Matteo."

His brother swallowed.

"The child was placed with Margaret after his mother disappeared."

I looked toward my father.

He nodded sadly.

"Margaret believed the story Vanessa told her."

My stomach tightened.

"Then why would Vanessa claim he was hers?"

James sighed.

"Because Richard Bellini needed someone to conceal the child's identity."

Luca's expression darkened.

"Why?"

Matteo looked away.

"Because of who his father was."

Silence.

Then Luca whispered:

"Who?"

Matteo slowly raised his eyes.

"Me."

I felt the floor tilt.

Matteo Moretti.

Oliver's father.

The missing brother.

The man who had been helping Margaret for years.

Luca stared.

"Does Vanessa know?"

Matteo nodded.

"Yes."

"And Daniel?"

"He was told a different story."

I thought about the little blue paper crown.

For Mommy, when she comes home.

My heart broke.

A little boy had spent nine years waiting for a woman who wasn't even his mother.

I looked at Matteo.

"Then who is Oliver's real mother?"

His expression changed.

He reached into his coat.

Removed a photograph.

Handed it to Luca.

Luca looked down.

For several seconds, he didn't move.

Then his face drained of color.

"That's impossible."

I stepped closer.

The photograph showed a young woman holding a newborn baby.

She had dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A warm smile.

Something about her face felt familiar.

Painfully familiar.

I stared.

Then my heart stopped.

The woman looked exactly like my mother had looked in photographs from her twenties.

I looked at my father.

"Dad?"

He closed his eyes.

Tears rolled down his cheeks.

I turned back to Matteo.

"Who is she?"

Matteo hesitated.

Then whispered:

"Her name was Sarah Brooks."

I froze.

Brooks.

My last name.

My father looked down.

I stared at him.

"Dad, who is Sarah?"

He couldn't answer.

The silence became unbearable.

Finally, he whispered:

"Your older sister."

My world stopped.

"I don't have a sister."

My father began crying.

"You do."

I stepped backward.

"No."

He reached toward me.

"Natalie—"

"Why didn't you tell me?"

His voice broke.

"Because I thought she was dead."

I stared at the photograph.

Sarah Brooks.

My sister.

The mother of Oliver.

The woman I'd never known existed.

Then Luca asked quietly:

"What happened to her?"

Matteo's expression hardened.

"She disappeared shortly after Oliver was born."

"Who took her?"

Matteo looked toward the warehouse entrance.

Then whispered:

"Vittorio."

Luca closed his eyes.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then Antonio entered.

His face was pale.

"Boss."

Luca turned.

"What?"

"We found something."

My heart pounded.

"What?"

Antonio held up a phone.

"A message just arrived from an unknown number."

He turned the screen toward Luca.

A video began playing.

A woman sat in a dimly lit room.

Dark hair.

Brown eyes.

A familiar smile.

Sarah Brooks.

Alive.

I covered my mouth.

The woman looked directly into the camera.

"Natalie."

My knees nearly gave way.

She continued.

"I know we've never met."

Tears filled her eyes.

"But I'm your sister."

I couldn't breathe.

She looked away briefly.

Then back at the camera.

"There's something you need to know about Oliver."

My heart thundered.

"Please," she whispered. "Don't let Vanessa take him."

The video flickered.

Sarah continued.

"And don't trust the man standing beside Luca."

I froze.

Everyone turned.

Antonio stood near the entrance.

Matteo stood beside my father.

Luca looked around.

The video continued.

"The person who arranged my disappearance is still inside the Moretti family."

My stomach tightened.

Then Sarah whispered:

"And he's been watching Natalie since the day she started working at the mansion."

The screen went black.

Silence filled the warehouse.

I looked at Luca.

His expression was unreadable.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered with trembling hands.

"Hello?"

A woman's voice spoke.

Soft.

Familiar.

"Hello, little sister."

Tears streamed down my face.

"Sarah?"

She began crying.

"Oh, Natalie."

I covered my mouth.

"Where are you?"

"Somewhere safe."

"Why didn't you come home?"

A long silence.

Then she whispered:

"Because the man who took me promised he'd hurt you if I did."

I looked around the warehouse.

My father.

Matteo.

Antonio.

Luca.

All of them watching me.

"Who?" I whispered.

Sarah's voice became urgent.

"Natalie, listen carefully."

My heart pounded.

"Tell me."

"The man who arranged everything is standing in that warehouse."

I stopped breathing.

"What?"

She whispered:

"And he knows you just found out."

Then the line went dead.

I slowly lowered my phone.

Luca looked at me.

"Natalie?"

I couldn't answer.

Because behind him, one of the men was reaching into his coat.

And for the first time, I understood that discovering the truth might be more dangerous than never knowing it at all.
