Chapter 12 - The Reckoning of Arthur Sterling

|

Arthur Sterling collapsed backward against his mahogany desk, knocking over a crystal decanter of vintage scotch.

The amber liquid pooled across his white paperwork, staining the financial documents like a pool of dried blood.

"You're dead," Arthur whispered, his voice trembling as he pointed a shaking finger at my face.

"I saw the nursery collapse into the furnace room with my own eyes!"

"You were a four-year-old child!"

Luca stepped forward, the heavy sole of his leather boot crushing Arthur's aluminum flight case into scrap metal.

"You underestimated the courage of an ordinary woman, Arthur," Luca snarled, grabbing the old man by his silk tie and lifting him to his feet.

"Eleanor Hart pulled my sister from the flames while you were celebrating in your country club."

"She bore the scars of your greed on her hands for twenty-six years so that this day could finally arrive."

Arthur gasped for breath as Luca's iron grip tightened around his throat, his face turning an ugly shade of purple.

"Wait... Luca, please!" Arthur choked out, his aristocratic veneer completely shattered into pathetic desperation.

"We can make a deal! Half of my global assets... five hundred million dollars... it's all yours!"

"I'll sign over the shipping ports, the pharmaceutical patents, the real estate trusts!"

"Just let me take my helicopter and leave the country!"

Luca looked at the groveling billionaire with the cold, detached disgust one might reserve for a cockroach.

"Do you remember what my mother said to you before you shot her, Arthur?" Luca asked softly.

Arthur's eyes rolled back in terror as the bloody memories of that night flooded his guilty conscience.

"She told you that blood is thicker than gold," Luca whispered, his voice vibrating with righteous vengeance.

"And she told you that one day, her children would collect the debt with compound interest."

I stepped forward, pulling the nine-millimeter pistol from my coat pocket and pointing the barrel directly between Arthur Sterling's eyes.

Arthur whimpered, closing his eyes tightly as he waited for the inevitable bullet to shatter his skull.

The penthouse fell into a dead silence, the only sound being the howling wind of the storm outside the shattered balcony doors.

My finger rested on the cold curve of the trigger, every instinct in my body screaming for immediate, bloody retribution.

I saw the years of poverty, the cold nights in the orphanage, the calloused hands from scrubbing floors, and Eleanor's burnt flesh.

It would have been so easy to squeeze that trigger and end his miserable life on the spot.

Luca watched me closely, not moving a muscle, ready to support whatever choice his little sister made.

Slowly, deliberately, I lowered the hammer of the pistol and clicked the safety back into place.

"No," I said quietly, looking down at the shivering, pathetic old man.

"A bullet in the head is too quick and too merciful for a creature like you."

"Death would be an escape from the hell you've earned."

Luca smiled, a deep, triumphant warmth illuminating his dark eyes.

Suddenly, the sound of multiple police sirens and federal tactical helicopters echoed from the street below.

The rhythmic thumping of rotor blades rattled the panoramic glass windows as searchlights illuminated the penthouse in blinding white light.

Federal SWAT teams poured through the elevator doors, their weapons drawn, led by the Assistant Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

"FBI! Nobody move!" the lead agent barked, flashing his gold badge as his tactical units secured the perimeter.

Luca stepped back smoothly, releasing Arthur's tie and raising his empty hands with effortless, untouchable grace.

"Good evening, Director Vance," Luca greeted the federal agent calmly, as if they were meeting at an upscale charity gala.

"You're right on time."

"Mr. Sterling was just packing his bags to confess to twenty-six years of murder, racketeering, and corporate arson."

Arthur looked at the federal agents, then at Luca, realizing the terrifying extent of the trap that had snapped shut around him.

"He set me up!" Arthur screamed, scrambling toward the agents on his hands and knees.

"Arrest him! He's Luca Moretti! He controls the Chicago syndicate!"

Director Vance looked down at Arthur Sterling with utter contempt, pulling a heavy pair of steel handcuffs from his tactical vest.

"Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for first-degree murder, federal conspiracy, and the attempted assassination of Eleanor Hart and Leo Hart," the director recited coldly.

The steel cuffs clicked around Arthur's wrists with the finality of a prison cell door slamming shut.

As they dragged the weeping, broken billionaire toward the elevators, I looked out over the glowing city of Chicago.

The dawn was finally beginning to break through the storm clouds, painting the eastern horizon in streaks of glorious gold and crimson.

The nightmare was over, and the dawn belonged to us.
