Chapter 3 - THE COLD IRON BOX

|

Heavy boots echoed against the brick path outside as Marco and four armed security guards entered the greenhouse.

The men stopped dead in their tracks, taking in the scene of their terrifying boss standing beside an elderly weeping woman and a trembling maid.

Vanessa rushed toward Marco, attempting to exert her authority as the lady of the mansion.

"Marco, stop this madness immediately! My husband is not in his right mind!"

Marco did not even blink, keeping his hands folded professionally over his tactical vest.

"I take orders exclusively from Mr. Moretti, ma'am."

Luca stepped forward and pointed directly at the base of the thirty-year-old white rosebush.

"Dig," Luca commanded, his voice rumbling like distant thunder.

"Be careful with the roots, but excavate two feet down immediately."

The guards plunged their steel shovels into the rich, dark soil, lifting heavy clods of earth away from the eastern wall.

Vanessa began pacing back and forth near the shattered doorway, frantically tapping at her diamond-encrusted smartphone.

I noticed her thumb trembling as she typed a rapid message, her eyes darting repeatedly toward the perimeter fence.

"Mr. Moretti," I spoke up, stepping forward despite the terror clawing at my throat.

Luca looked at me, his sharp gaze cutting through the tension.

"Mrs. Moretti is sending messages to someone outside the gates."

Vanessa's head snapped toward me, her eyes flashing with pure venom.

"Shut your mouth, you worthless little maid! How dare you speak to my husband about my personal business!"

Luca didn't waste a second.

He closed the distance between them in two massive strides and ripped the phone straight out of Vanessa's manicured hands.

"Give that back to me!" she shrieked, lunging forward.

Luca shoved her backward with one forearm, looking down at the illuminated screen.

His eyes narrowed into terrifying slits as he read the message out loud.

"'The old woman talked. Abort the demolition and initiate protocol seven immediately.'"

Luca looked up from the screen, staring at the woman he had married only six months ago.

"Who is protocol seven, Vanessa?"

Vanessa's face went completely pale, all the color draining from her cheeks until she looked like a ghost in red silk.

Before she could answer, a loud, metallic clang echoed from the trench beneath the rosebush.

"Boss!" Marco shouted from the excavated pit, dropping his shovel to his knees.

"We hit something solid!"

Luca immediately turned his back on his wife and walked to the edge of the pit.

I helped Eleanor walk closer, supporting her frail weight as she peered into the dark hole.

Two feet below the surface, half-tangled in the thick white roots of Maria's favorite roses, lay an olive-drab steel ammunition box.

It was wrapped securely in thick, yellowed sheets of industrial plastic and sealed with waterproof marine wax.

The metal was cold, ancient, and heavy with the weight of buried sins.

"Lift it out," Luca ordered, his breathing noticeably unsteady.

Marco and another guard grasped the heavy steel handles, groaning as they hauled the lockbox onto the damp flagstones.

Decades of damp earth fell from its edges, scattering across the polished floor.

Luca knelt on one knee in the dirt, completely unconcerned about ruining his four-thousand-dollar Italian trousers.

He ran his trembling fingers over the heavy padlock that kept the container sealed shut.

"The key," Luca whispered, looking up at Eleanor with raw vulnerability.

Eleanor reached inside her worn knitted sweater and pulled out a tarnished silver chain that hung around her neck.

Dangling from the chain was a tiny, vintage brass key stamped with the Moretti family crest.

"Maria gave this to me the night before she took her last breath in the hospital," Eleanor whispered softly.

"She said only two people would ever have the right to open it: you, or your brother."

Luca took the warm key from her fragile fingers, inserted it into the rusted lock, and turned it until it clicked.
