Chapter 13 - THE OLD MAN WHO REFUSED TO BE SILENCED|

We reached the Moretti mansion shortly after midnight.

Three police vehicles were parked outside.

Gabriel stood near the front entrance, speaking with an officer.

His expression was grim.

Luca rushed toward him.

"Where's my father?"

"He's safe, boss."

I nearly collapsed with relief.

Gabriel continued.

"Mrs. Ellis refused to let the men take him."

Luca frowned.

"What men?"

"Two men arrived in a private medical transport vehicle."

"They claimed Frank needed emergency treatment at a facility outside Chicago."

"They had paperwork bearing your signature."

Luca looked furious.

"I never authorized anything."

Gabriel nodded.

"We know."

Inside the mansion, Frank sat beside the fireplace.

Mrs. Ellis stood next to him, holding a cup of tea.

When Frank saw Luca, he immediately smiled.

"There's my boy."

Luca crossed the room and knelt before him.

"Dad, are you hurt?"

Frank shook his head.

"Only my patience."

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

Then Frank reached for my hand.

"Claire, you should have seen Mrs. Ellis."

I turned toward the elderly housekeeper.

She looked embarrassed.

"I only asked those men to show me proper authorization."

Frank chuckled.

"She told them they'd have to carry her out before they carried me anywhere."

Mrs. Ellis lifted her chin.

"And I meant it."

Luca stood and embraced her.

"Thank you."

She wiped her eyes.

"Your mother trusted me with this family."

"I wasn't about to let those men take your father."

Detective Alvarez entered.

"The paperwork appears fraudulent."

"We're investigating everyone involved in the attempted transfer."

Luca turned toward her.

"Raymond?"

"We believe he arranged it."

She looked at Frank.

"Mr. Moretti, did the men say anything unusual?"

Frank nodded.

"One told the other that Raymond wouldn't wait all night."

The detective wrote it down.

"Anything else?"

Frank thought carefully.

Then his eyes widened.

"Yes."

"He said the plane was ready."

Luca looked toward Detective Alvarez.

"Raymond's aircraft."

She nodded.

"Our officers are already coordinating with airport security."

Frank reached for Luca's sleeve.

"Son."

Luca looked down.

"Yes, Dad?"

"Please don't go after him."

Luca hesitated.

Frank's voice grew stronger.

"Let the police do their work."

"I've already lost Maria."

He swallowed.

"I won't lose you because of the man who took her from us."

I watched Luca struggle with himself.

For years, his answer to betrayal had been fear.

Power.

Retaliation.

But now his father was asking him for something much harder.

Restraint.

Finally, Luca nodded.

"I'll stay."

Frank closed his eyes.

"Thank you."

We gathered in the living room while investigators continued their work.

A hospital nurse had already checked Frank after the attempted transfer.

He was frightened but physically stable.

The medical staff had recommended rest.

But Frank insisted he needed to finish something first.

He asked me to bring his old notebook.

I retrieved it from the evidence folder after confirming with Detective Alvarez that a documented copy could be used.

Frank opened it to a marked page.

"Raymond came here three Thursdays ago."

Luca leaned closer.

"What happened?"

"He told me I was becoming a burden."

Frank's voice trembled.

"He said Maria would be ashamed if she could see me."

I felt anger rise inside me.

Luca's expression darkened.

Frank continued.

"Then he told me I should sign papers giving Vanessa authority over certain family decisions."

"Did you sign?"

"No."

Frank straightened.

"I told him Maria didn't marry a fool."

A faint smile crossed Luca's face.

Frank looked at the notebook.

"That's when he became angry."

"He said my son had forgotten how much the family owed him."

Luca shook his head.

"I never knew."

Frank touched his arm.

"I know, son."

Then the old man revealed something else.

"Before Raymond left, he called Simon."

"He didn't know I could hear him through the open door."

Detective Alvarez leaned forward.

"What did he say?"

Frank swallowed.

"He said the old man was becoming troublesome."

His eyes filled with tears.

"Then he said they should have handled me the way they handled Maria."

Nobody moved.

Luca slowly covered his face.

For fifteen years, Raymond had sat at their dinner table.

He had toasted Maria's memory.

He had hugged Frank at Christmas.

He had watched Luca grow into a man.

And all that time, he had carried the secret of what happened on the night Maria died.

Detective Alvarez asked Frank whether he would provide a formal statement.

He nodded.

"I've been trying to tell the truth for weeks."

Then he added quietly, "I would like someone to listen this time."

The detective's expression softened.

"We're listening, Mr. Moretti."

At 2:46 a.m., her phone rang.

She stepped into the hallway.

When she returned, her face had changed.

"Raymond Calder is in custody."

Luca stood.

"Where?"

"At the airport."

"He was preparing to board his aircraft when officers detained him under the warrants obtained during the investigation."

I pressed a hand against my mouth.

Detective Alvarez continued.

"Investigators also recovered several boxes of financial records from the warehouse identified by Simon."

"Raymond's attorneys will be notified of the charges."

Frank closed his eyes.

For a long moment, I thought he might be praying.

Then tears slipped down his face.

"Maria."

His voice broke.

"We finally did it."

Luca knelt beside him.

"No, Dad."

He took his father's hands.

"You did it."

Frank shook his head.

"I couldn't have done it alone."

Then he looked at me.

"Claire believed me when everyone else thought I was losing my mind."

I began crying.

Frank smiled through his tears.

"Seventy-nine years old."

He gave a soft laugh.

"And somebody finally remembered that I still have a voice."

Luca embraced him.

"I'm going to listen from now on, Dad."

Frank held his son tightly.

"That's all I ever wanted."

But the investigation wasn't finished.

Detective Alvarez explained that Raymond's defense team would likely challenge Frank's memory and his ability to provide reliable testimony.

Luca looked toward his father.

"Are you sure you want to go through that?"

Frank straightened in his chair.

His hands still trembled.

His body was still recovering.

But his eyes were clear.

"I spent fifteen years waiting for the chance to tell someone what happened to my wife."

Then he said the words I would remember for the rest of my life.

"If they want to question my memory, let them."

May you like

"I remember Maria."

"And I remember who took her away."
