Chapter 10 - The Reckoning of the High Commission

The silence in the Grand Ballroom of the Drake Hotel was so complete that the distant hum of the ventilation system sounded like thunder.

Four hundred people watched in petrified confusion as the elderly German Shepherd remained frozen in his rigid sitting position, staring intently at the white lilies.

"What is the meaning of this circus, Moretti?" shouted Dominic Falcone, the supreme chairman of the five-family High Commission, standing from his table.

"You bring a hound into a sacred peace council?"

"This hound has more honor in his broken teeth than every man sitting at this table," Luca answered, his voice ringing with cold, absolute authority.

Luca stepped up to the head table, reached into his jacket, and pulled out a heavy pair of stainless-steel floral shears.

With one swift, brutal stroke, Luca severed the thick stems of the white lilies and swept the entire floral display onto the floor.

Water splashed across the white linen tablecloth, pooling around the heavy, square ceramic pedestal that remained behind.

Luca did not hesitate; he drew his custom .45-caliber pistol and slammed the heavy steel butt of the grip directly into the side of the ceramic base.

The decorative porcelain cracked and shattered, falling away in jagged white shards.

Beneath the hollow shell sat a four-pound block of gray, putty-like military explosive.

Taped to the top of the block was an electronic receiver with a blinking red LED light and an integrated digital detonator.

Gasps and shrieks of terror erupted from the guests closest to the dais.

Women dropped their purses and scrambled backward, overturning chairs and crashing into silver serving carts.

"Hexogen military explosive," Luca announced, picking up a shard of the broken porcelain and tossing it onto Castiglione's lap.

"Stabilized with synthetic plasticizer."

"There are ten of these vases placed throughout this room."

"One at every exit, two beneath the orchestra stage, and one sitting right beside Don Antonio Castiglione's champagne glass."

Castiglione bolted to his feet, knocking his velvet chair backward.

"Lies! He planted it himself to disrupt the charter!" Castiglione screamed, his voice cracking with hysteria.

"Kill him! Kill him now!"

Castiglione’s two personal bodyguards reached inside their jackets for their concealed handguns.

They never cleared leather.

Matteo and three Moretti marksmen fired simultaneously through suppressed weapons.

Two quiet, muffled thuds echoed across the room, and Castiglione’s guards dropped instantly to the carpet, blood pooling beneath their expensive silk waistcoats.

Panic threatened to turn into a deadly stampede, but Luca raised his voice, a sound like cracking thunder that pinned every soul in their tracks.

"Nobody moves!" Luca roared.

"If a single person runs for the doors, my men will lock the fire gates and leave you inside with the remaining nine charges!"

The ballroom froze.

Men who controlled billion-dollar cartels and city judges who sentenced men to death were trembling in their dress shoes, paralyzed by the sheer dominance of the man standing before them.

Luca turned to Matteo and gave a single nod.

Matteo walked over to the audio-visual console on the mezzanine wall and inserted Marco Bellini's encrypted flash drive into the master system.

Instantly, the massive projection screens hanging behind the dais flickered to life.

The audio recording of Vanessa Bellini-Moretti's frantic confession filled the ballroom speakers, echoing with terrifying clarity.

*"Castiglione paid my brother's twenty-million-dollar debt! He gave me the poison for the dog! He told me Rex had to die before Friday because the dog could smell the hexogen in the flowers!"*

Below the audio, the screens displayed official bank wire transfers from Castiglione’s shell corporations in the Cayman Islands directly to Marco Bellini's accounts.

The entire conspiracy was laid bare before every family boss, every corrupt official, and every neutral observer in the city.

Chairman Falcone stared at the screens, his aged face twisting with disgust and fury as he looked at Castiglione.

"You violated the sacred council, Antonio," Falcone whispered, his voice trembling with rage.

"You brought explosives into a neutral sanctuary to slaughter your brothers."

"He was going to kill all of us!" Castiglione shouted desperately, backing toward the service corridor behind the stage.

"He was going to wipe out the Commission and take the docks for himself!"

"You tried to murder my father on his deathbed," Luca said, stepping forward, his eyes burning with ancient, generational hatred.

"You bought off my wife."

"You poisoned my dog."

"And now, you are out of moves."

Rex let out a deafening, chest-rattling bark that echoed off the high ceiling like a mortar strike.

The sound broke Castiglione's final shred of sanity.

The old boss pulled a small, silver radio-frequency trigger from his vest pocket.

His thumb hovered directly over the red detonation button.

"If I am going to hell tonight, Moretti, I am taking every single one of you with me!" Castiglione screamed.

Before Castiglione could press the button, Rex moved.

Age, poisoned kidneys, and stiffened joints vanished beneath a decade of lethal conditioning and boundless loyalty.

The silver-and-black shepherd launched himself across the head table in a single, magnificent leap, scattering silverware and crystal goblets across the floor.

Rex hit Castiglione's chest with seventy pounds of unstoppable force, knocking the older man violently to the floor.

Rex’s jaws clamped onto Castiglione's right wrist, his powerful teeth grinding down on the bone until the small electronic detonator slipped from the mobster's fingers and clattered across the parquet.

Castiglione screamed in agony, thrashing beneath the massive animal, but Rex pinned him ruthlessly, his yellow teeth bared inches from the traitor's throat, waiting for his master's word.

Luca walked slowly around the table, his custom pistol held casually at his side.

He stopped above Castiglione and stepped his heavy leather boot directly onto the fallen detonator, crushing the plastic casing into useless fragments beneath his heel.

"Good boy, Rex," Luca murmured softly.

Rex released the shattered wrist and stepped back, his chest heaving, his amber eyes locked onto Luca with unyielding trust.

Luca leveled the barrel of his .45 directly between Castiglione's terrified, weeping eyes.

"Wait! Luca, please!" Castiglione sobbed, clutching his broken wrist to his chest.

"The High Commission... they can vote on my punishment! Give me a trial!"

Luca looked up at Chairman Falcone and the other family bosses watching in dead silence.

Falcone slowly turned his back, followed by every single captain in the room.

The trial was over.

Luca looked down at the man who had tried to poison his soul.

"Rex decided your verdict three days ago, Antonio," Luca whispered.

Suddenly, a sharp, metallic click resonated from the mezzanine balcony above the ballroom.

A red laser sight cut through the smoky air, landing squarely in the center of Luca's forehead.

From the catwalk fifty feet above, a hidden sniper dressed in black tactical gear racked the slide of an assault rifle.

At that exact split second, the master electrical breaker of the Drake Hotel blew out with a deafening spark.

The entire Grand Ballroom plunged into pitch-black darkness.

Gunfire erupted instantly in the blind shadows.

Rex let out a ferocious, echoing war cry into the dark.

And in the blackness, the battle for Chicago began.
