Chapter 8 - THE ROOM ABOVE HARBOR HOUSE|

When I finally saw Rosa again, she was sitting on a hospital bed beneath a thin white blanket.

Her hair had come loose from its usual elegant bun.

There was a small bandage on her forearm.

But the moment she saw me, she reached out both hands.

“Claire.”

I hurried toward her.

“Oh, Mrs. Rosa.”

She pulled me into a surprisingly strong embrace.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she began crying against my shoulder.

“I thought they'd hurt you.”

I held her carefully.

“I'm safe.”

“I'm right here.”

She pulled back and examined my face as though she needed to make certain.

“They said they had you.”

“They told me I'd never see you again unless I cooperated.”

Luca stood in the doorway.

His expression was one I'd never seen before.

There was no anger.

No carefully controlled authority.

Only the exhaustion of a son who had nearly lost his mother.

“Ma.”

Rosa looked up.

He crossed the room and embraced her.

She held him with both arms.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.”

Luca shook his head.

“Don't.”

“Don't ever apologize for wanting to protect someone.”

He kissed her forehead.

“Just promise you'll never believe that you have to face people like this alone again.”

Rosa nodded against his shoulder.

Detective Ellis waited until Rosa was ready before asking what had happened.

Rosa told us that someone had called the house phone shortly before the power outage.

The caller claimed Claire had been taken to Harbor House.

He said Rosa needed to cooperate quietly or Claire would be harmed.

“Did you recognize his voice?” Detective Ellis asked.

Rosa hesitated.

“I think it was one of Vanessa's men.”

“I couldn't be certain.”

She explained that someone wearing a security uniform had met her near the service corridor.

He'd shown her a message supposedly from Claire.

The message asked her to come downstairs.

Rosa had gone because she believed I was in danger.

“Did anyone force you into the van?”

She nodded.

“When I realized Claire wasn't there, I tried to go back.”

“The man grabbed my arm.”

“He told me I had no choice.”

Luca looked away.

I could see his hands shaking.

But he remained silent while his mother spoke.

At Harbor House, the men had taken Rosa to an unused upper floor.

They'd told her to sign another set of documents.

When she refused, they threatened to keep her there until a doctor arrived.

I felt sick.

The same pattern.

The same paperwork.

The same attempt to turn a frightened woman's refusal into proof that she couldn't make decisions.

But this time, something had gone wrong for the people holding her.

A nursing assistant named Naomi Reed had been asked to help prepare Rosa for transfer.

Naomi had recognized Rosa from visits to Harbor House.

She'd also noticed the bruises and the woman's obvious distress.

Instead of helping the men restrain her, Naomi had insisted that Rosa needed medical attention.

When the men argued, Naomi had used an unattended phone to contact emergency services.

Then she stayed with Rosa until officers arrived.

“She was very brave,” Rosa whispered.

Detective Ellis nodded.

“We've spoken with her.”

“She's cooperating with investigators.”

The police were examining the role of the transport company and the people who had entered the estate during the outage.

They'd also located the van used to move Rosa.

But Grant Bellini wasn't among the people taken into custody that night.

The officers believed he'd left the property before their arrival.

Rosa looked toward her handbag.

“There's something else.”

I handed it to her.

She removed her phone.

“Claire taught me how to take pictures without making the flash go off.”

Despite everything, she managed a faint smile.

I stared at her.

“What did you photograph?”

Rosa opened her gallery.

The first image showed a desk.

Spread across it were financial statements, property records, and a typed page headed Harbor House Transition Plan.

In the corner of the photograph, a date was visible.

The following Friday.

Beneath it were three words.

Final authorization required.

Rosa enlarged the image with trembling fingers.

“I saw Vanessa's name.”

I leaned closer.

There it was.

Vanessa Moretti was listed as the proposed authorized representative for Rosa.

The documents also referred to the supposedly existing power of attorney.

My heart pounded.

Rosa had been terrified.

She'd been held against her will.

Yet she'd still managed to photograph evidence.

“You did something incredible,” I whispered.

She shook her head.

“I was afraid.”

“You can be afraid and still be brave.”

Her eyes filled again.

Luca examined the photograph with Detective Ellis.

The image didn't establish every detail of the scheme.

But it identified records investigators could seek through proper legal channels.

When Rosa was ready, we left the hospital room.

Luca walked beside her wheelchair while I carried her coat.

Near the elevator, he stopped.

“Claire.”

I looked at him.

“Thank you for coming.”

“She matters to me.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

For a moment, he seemed about to say something else.

Instead, he stepped aside so I could walk beside Rosa.

That small courtesy stayed with me.

For years, I'd learned to move out of Luca Moretti's way.

Now he was making room for me.

Later that night, Detective Ellis called.

The estate's security records had been reviewed.

During the outage, an electronic override had opened the service gate.

The override was tied to a credential assigned to Victor Kane, a guard hired through a private security contractor.

Victor had not reported for his next shift.

Investigators were trying to locate him.

When I told Luca, he was silent for a long time.

Then he said something that frightened me more than his anger ever had.

“Claire, I used to think nobody would dare touch my family because of my name.”

I remembered Rosa sitting in the ballroom, begging not to be taken away.

“Your name didn't protect her,” I said softly.

“No.”

May you like

He looked toward his mother's room.

“And I'm beginning to understand why.”
