Chapter 11 - The Truth Luca Could No Longer Escape|

On Monday morning, Luca Moretti did something nobody in the mansion had seen him do in years.

He sat at the breakfast table with his daughter.

There were no business calls.

No security meetings.

No urgent messages interrupting their conversation.

Just a father, his nine-year-old daughter, and a plate of strawberry pancakes.

Sophia looked at him suspiciously.

"Don't you have to go to work?"

Luca shook his head.

"Not this morning."

"Why?"

"Because I have somewhere more important to be."

She glanced around the table.

"Here?"

He smiled.

"Right here."

Sophia slowly reached for his hand.

I stood beside the kitchen counter, watching them.

For the first time since Isabella's death, Sophia looked like a little girl who belonged in her own home.

But outside that peaceful kitchen, the battle for her future was far from over.

At seven-thirty, Nora Whitcomb arrived with news.

A judge had issued a temporary order preventing the foundation's board from approving the disputed changes until the financial allegations could be reviewed.

The suspicious bank transfers remained on hold.

Daniel Kessler's access to the foundation's accounts had been suspended.

And an emergency family-court hearing had been scheduled for later that morning.

Luca listened without interrupting.

Then he asked one question.

"Will Sophia have to testify?"

Nora shook her head.

"Not today."

He exhaled.

"Good."

Sophia looked up from her pancakes.

"Daddy, what's testify?"

Luca hesitated.

"It means telling people what happened."

She considered that.

"Like telling the truth?"

"Exactly."

Sophia nodded.

"I can do that."

Luca leaned toward her.

"I know you can, princess."

Then he kissed her forehead.

"But you've already been very brave."

At ten o'clock, Luca, Nora, and I entered a Chicago courthouse.

Vanessa was already waiting.

She wore a black designer suit and dark sunglasses.

Beside her stood a well-dressed attorney carrying an expensive briefcase.

When she noticed me, she smiled.

"Still playing the devoted maid, Claire?"

I said nothing.

Luca stepped beside me.

"Leave her alone."

Vanessa laughed.

"How touching."

Then she looked directly at him.

"Be careful, Luca."

Her expression hardened.

"Judges don't usually appreciate men with your reputation."

Luca stared at her.

"Then they'll hear the truth."

Inside the courtroom, Judge Margaret Brennan examined the documents.

Nora presented the forged guardianship paperwork, the school records, the disputed affidavit, and the evidence gathered by investigators.

The court's own records confirmed that no judge had issued an order terminating Luca's parental rights.

The supposed surrender document did not correspond to a valid court proceeding.

And the seal on the transportation paperwork had been improperly reproduced.

Judge Brennan looked toward Vanessa's attorney.

"Your client appears to have relied on documents that do not match this court's records."

Vanessa's attorney stood.

"Your Honor, Mrs. Moretti believed she was acting in the child's best interests."

Nora rose.

"By arranging for a nine-year-old to be removed from her home on her birthday?"

The judge raised a hand.

"Counsel, we'll proceed in order."

Vanessa's attorney argued that Sophia had been emotionally unstable and that Luca had frequently been absent.

He claimed Vanessa had been forced to make difficult decisions because Luca was unavailable.

Then he produced the genuine power of attorney Luca had signed after his marriage.

Nora did not dispute its authenticity.

Instead, she explained its limited purpose.

It allowed Vanessa to assist with certain educational matters.

It did not authorize her to transfer Sophia into residential care without proper consent or court approval.

Judge Brennan turned toward Luca.

"Mr. Moretti, did you knowingly give your wife authority over some of your daughter's educational decisions?"

Luca stood.

"Yes, Your Honor."

My heart tightened.

He could have made excuses.

He could have blamed Daniel or Vanessa.

But he didn't.

"I signed that document because I trusted my wife to help care for Sophia."

The judge studied him.

"Did you read it?"

Luca hesitated.

"Not carefully enough."

Vanessa smiled.

But Luca continued.

"That was my failure."

The courtroom became quiet.

"I allowed my responsibilities as a father to become someone else's job."

His voice grew rough.

"I believed money, security, and a comfortable home were enough."

He looked down.

"They weren't."

Judge Brennan watched him carefully.

Luca took a breath.

"My daughter spent her ninth birthday crying in a kitchen because she believed I didn't want her anymore."

His eyes filled with tears.

"I can't undo that."

He paused.

"But I can stop pretending I did everything right."

I watched the judge's expression soften slightly.

Then Luca said something that surprised everyone.

"If the court believes Sophia needs independent protection while this is investigated, I will cooperate."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

Luca continued.

"I don't want special treatment because of my name."

He looked directly at the judge.

"I want my daughter safe."

For a long moment, the courtroom remained silent.

Then Nora presented the school evidence.

Mrs. Harper's records contradicted the allegations of violent behavior.

The attendance footage supported my statement that I had not signed the disputed affidavit at the claimed time.

And the preserved video from Madison's tablet contained statements directly connecting Vanessa and Daniel to the forged documents.

Vanessa's attorney objected to the recording being treated as conclusive proof without authentication.

Judge Brennan agreed that a full examination was necessary.

But she also made it clear that the evidence raised serious concerns.

After considering the immediate risk to Sophia, the judge issued temporary protective directions.

Vanessa was prohibited from contacting Sophia pending further proceedings.

The disputed educational authority was revoked.

And an independent child advocate would review Sophia's welfare while she remained in Luca's care.

The forged guardianship documents were referred to the appropriate investigators.

Sophia was not going anywhere.

As we left the courtroom, I felt my knees weaken with relief.

Luca stopped near the courthouse entrance.

He looked at Nora.

"She's safe?"

Nora nodded.

"She's staying home."

He closed his eyes.

For several seconds, he seemed unable to speak.

Then Vanessa approached us.

Her expensive perfume reached me before her voice did.

"Enjoy your victory."

Luca looked at her.

"This was never a game."

She smiled bitterly.

"You think you've won because you found a few papers?"

Nora stepped forward.

"Vanessa, your attorney is waiting."

But Vanessa ignored her.

She looked directly at Luca.

"Daniel kept more secrets than you know."

Luca's expression changed.

"What secrets?"

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Ask yourself why Isabella was so worried about that foundation before she died."

Then she walked away.

I watched Luca stare after her.

But before he could follow, Nora's phone rang.

She answered.

A moment later, her eyes widened.

"Luca, the records facility has agreed to release Isabella's memory box under the preservation arrangements."

He turned sharply.

"Where is it?"

Nora swallowed.

"On its way to my office."

Then she looked at him.

"And the inventory says there's a sealed envelope inside that none of the Bellinis managed to open."

May you like

The label carried Isabella's handwriting.

And it was addressed to Luca.
